After reading the reviews of this hotel, I wondered if I should look into different places to stay because I had always stayed with friends in nyc. It turned out that I enjoyed the hotel immensely, but it was only because we got a great room, after initially putting us in a very run-of-the-mill, dark area that seemed to be for the undesireables.
When we arrived at a little after 3pm, the room type that I requested (a high-floor, corner room) wasn't available so they told us to come back in an hour. When we returned, they put us on the 14th floor (the hotel has 16 floors -- really 15 because they have no 13th floor), but the room looked out onto a brick wall, and it was very small. I called down to the desk and explained my problem. They immediately sent keys up to another room on the 12th floor which was perfect because it had a long balcony that overlooked 39th Ave. and the Chrysler building. Had we stayed in the original room, my rating of the hotel would have been very average and only worth it if you get a very cheap rate. But because we got a nice room, with an incredible view, and a great balcony, I was extremely pleased. I'm a gold member of the SPG plan so that may be why this worked out well...I don't know.
The area of the hotel is not my favorite. It's very business-orieanted and after-work hours and on weekends, it's pretty much dead. Dead for NYC standards anyway. I live in Orlando, so NYC dead is Orlando's equivalent to New Year's Eve. If I could pick a location, I would rather stay in the West Village or in Union Square, but midtown is a good spot to be if you want to explore both the village area and the park/upper east and west sides.
Getting around is fairly easy. The subway is at 42nd and Lexington (three blocks north on Lexington from the hotel).
The service is excellent. They really did give us whatever, whenever. You press a button, and within a couple of minutes, they show up at your door with whatever you requested.
The bathrooms are small, but fine. I liked the showers at other W hotels and non-W hotels better, but it got us clean, so that's good. They should have just gotten rid of the tub and put in a straight shower; the tub is very shallow so I can't imagine using it for a bath.
The beds are the same as at any W hotel: they're great. One review said that the sheets were crisp and uncomfortable. Whatever. The beds are extremely comfortable...at least you know you'll get a great bed no matter what the room looks like.
I would recommend this hotel if either you don't care about the money or you can get a good deal (under $200) or you can get a preferred room. Like I said, if I had paid 280/night for a dingy room w/ no view, my review would have been much different.
Also, if you're bothered by small problems (e.g. a knick in the wall, a scratch on the desk, etc), then stay somewhere else. There are plenty of small scratches and the rooms could probably use re-painting (the rooms are fine, but if you are EXTREMELY picky, then you might be dissapointed).
Also, just as with any of the other W hotels, I was again happy to see that the 'adult' selection included a good amount of gay titles. After all, true equality for gays doesn't come with marriage rights, but with the accessibility to hotel porn, right? Just kidding, in case you're a slow one. And if you are, or if you find the fact that they have gay porn shocking, stop staying in my hotels...you people are an annoyance.
