“Great value hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 14, 2012

Stayed only three nights but liked the hotel. Friendly service, feels quite cozy, large rooms, with a sleeping and working/TV room. TV is actually oversized. Bathroom looks a bit old fashioned, would need anrenovation. But nice and clean and great central location. Apparently, everyone gets an "upgrade" to a suite. Maybe they only have these big rooms?

St giles is a convenient place to stay in the City. # blocks from Grand Central and within easy walking distances from many attractions. It is always very clean, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. It is a great value.

This is my first trip advisor comment despite using it all the time. This was a great hotel. Very clean and large rooms for New York. I was able to check in early. Very friendly staff from the doorman to the front desk. In a nice location just a quick cab or nice walk to the main attractions. My personal phone broke while there. Staff allowed me to make a business call using personal cell phone. Will definitely stay there for next trip in New York.

Went here for breakfast this morning. One of the only places open for breakfast at 9:30am on a Sunday. Continental breakfast and a cook to order menu. We ordered off the menu and were extremely disappointed with the lack of service which was nearly non-existent. Figured out why when the bill came - for a party of 5 they charged an 18%gratuity included. I have no problem paying an appropriate gratuity but the service here was horrible and probably due to the fact our waitress knew she was receiving an 18% tip. Order was incomplete and they never checked to see how the food was. Had the worst home fries ever. They were almost mealy and could have been made some time before then as they were also cold. I hope the hotel is better than its restaurant.

I stayed here because it is close to my office. It was supposed to be a respite from dealing with post-Hurricane Sandy commuter train problems. I’ve stayed at a wide range of hotels in Manhattan over the years, from downtown boutiques to middle-of-the-road chains to grand 5-star properties. Relative to these other stays, my experience at the St. Giles Court was pretty dismal. The only good part – the doormen were unfailingly friendly and professional. However, check-in was perfunctory and rushed (though there was no one in line behind me). Loud music poured into the small under-populated lobby from the adjacent, under-populated bar, giving it a trashy, depressing quality rather than hip or chic. The room was dreary. Poorly lighted and the bedside lamp was missing its finial - so the shade hung there, crooked and sad. The carpet was badly frayed and worn at the bathroom threshold. There was an acrid odor of air freshener covering old (?) cigarette smoke. The ancient heater under the window blew dust and rattled loudly when it went on. The black metal double-hung window was drafty and a vinyl roller shade served as the only window covering. The bathroom sink did not drain properly so water quickly filled the basin and bits of hair and whatever else came up from below as it filled. The shower arm/showerhead rattled violently when turned on, as though it might snap off the wall at any moment. I think this kind of kind of second-rate faux boutique hotel concept (lipstick on a dumpy old hotel property) would have played better in the pre-recession world. But now, it is just a bad value when there are so many better options at the same price point in midtown.

This hotel was close to a client of mine, so I booked it for a work trip. On the east side, in the Murray Hill neighborhood, this hotel is close to Grand Central, which makes other areas of the city easily accessible as well. When I arrived to check in, the concierge had an upgrade for me. The room was ENORMOUS! A full sitting room and separate bedroom, it was the largest hotel room I have ever stayed in NYC. The fixtures in the room were modern, but a few things could stand to be upgraded (ill-fitting slip-covers and some tears in the carpet.) The staff was extremely friendly and the room was clean. My bedroom window had a built-in a/c unit and faced Lexington Ave. At night (around 2 am) they started to do MAJOR construction outside. I ended up sleeping on the couch in the sitting room of my suite until about 5 am when it stopped. (Room was on the 4th floor). Be sure to request that your room NOT face Lexington Ave (or get a room above the 10th floor) until this construction project is completed. I was very disappointed that this event ruined my stay here, because it was an otherwise lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Request that your room not look out over Lexington Ave, or request a higher floor

The St. Giles should be called the St. Gauge. The miracle is that they can charge what they charge for such an average hotel. After Sandy they tripled their prices. Service was bad. The door to my room didn't even cover the whole entranceway. Decore is cheesy and worn. There is a lot of choice in NY - no reason to stay here.
