“Unforgettable lovely people.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014

I can't say enough about what lovely people Peggy and Lloyd are and how much I appreciate what they do for their home and their community. There's no getting around it, Harlem had a certain poor reputation. But much is changing. New developments abound. This residence is gorgeous lovingly restored old brownstone mansions, in the hands of caring, community minded artistic people. We were two sisters and two friends who shared the top floor apartment for five days. Two bedrooms and a kitchen. Clean as a whistle. Gracious assistance from Lloyd with luggage might be available for all those stairs! Local restaurants, such as the legendary Sylvia's are a five minute walk. We found a manicure and massage shop
that we went back to twice, it was so fantastic. I would love to keep this as my secret wonderful place in NYC! Will most definitely visit again.

We recently stayed at Villa 121 on a five-day trip to NYC. The house is an old brownstone in Harlem and it has lots of character. The location is very convenient - just a couple of blocks to subway stations and bus stops so getting around Manhattan is quick and easy. Also, if you fly in/out of La Guardia the M60 bus from the airport stops a few blocks away, so you can save a $35.00 cab fare. As soon as we arrived we bought Metropasses which, for $30.00, gave us unlimited travel on the subway and buses for up to 7 days. There are quite a number of very good restaurants within easy walking distance. We tried Vinateria, Chez Lucienne and Flat Top and enjoyed our meals at all of them. There is an Applebees at 5th Ave and W 125th street (close to where the M60 bus stops) which is a good place to go for breakfast. Il Cafe Latte on Lenox is also a nearby breakfast place.
The green room is a bit of a hike up a couple of flights of stairs so you may not want to bring a heavy suitcase if you book that room. However, the room was very large and comfortable - with much more space than a standard hotel room. Our hosts Peggy and Lloyd were friendly and helpful and on arrival we got a lot of tips on how to get around, where to eat etc.
Overall, we'd highly recommend staying here.

Our family of 5 stayed on the green floor in this beautiful brownstone building which the lovely owners occupy and have owned for many years. As we were staying at a very expensive time it was a much cheaper option that also offered us more space than staying in a hotel. We had 3 rooms that were spacious and had a small kitchenette area. This was handy but could be even better with a few tweaks...an electric kettle and toaster would have been great. The interior is beautiful and the area was perfectly fine to stay in. The express trains were great and there were a few good food options nearby. We always felt very safe and spent some lovely time exploring the area. This is a great option for families looking for a more affordable and spacious choice.

My mother and I stayed at this beautiful Villa last week and had the most wonderful experience! The room has a vintage, Victorian feel to it. It was comfy, cozy and felt like home. The area is located conveniently just a few subway stops to Times Square (where I was doing my one woman show and had to commute daily). I would recommend the restaurants "Barawine" (The Lamb was divine) and Red Rooster (If you want to splurge). For breakfast, Cafe Latte is great. All within walking distance of the Villa. There's also a CVS pharmacy, Kinkos and plenty of shopping in the area. I think my favorite part of staying at the Villa was meeting it's two lovely owners (and our new friends) Peggy and Lloyd. They made our stay so enjoyable. We even sat up one night and sipped champagne (that was their gift to us) and had great conversation. I would highly recommend Villa 121 to anyone seeking to have a unique and fun New York experience. I would definitely stay again when I come back! Thank you Peggy and Lloyd for making my one woman shows' debut in New York and my mom's birthday so special! :)

Recently stayed a week in the green room (with inside bath) and were delighted. The location is very convenient, just a few blocks to the express subway. An unlimited metro pass allowed us to hop on buses and subways at will; it's definitely the way to get around the City. Hosts Peggy and Lloyd were wonderful and accommodating and provided brochures and excellent recommendations for restaurants. The house is a little noisy, but that's to be expected with a 125 year-old brownstone. In terms of charm and value, there's no comparison to hotels that would have cost five times as much! We would definitely return again if our travels take us back to the Big Apple.

Room Tip: The stairs are steep, so rooms on the top floor may pose a challenge for some. The green room on th...

Love!

It has been 2 weeks since we’ve returned from our stay with Peggy and Llyod’s Villa 121 and we’ve likely recommended it to everyone we know by now.

Having spoken to Peggy over the phone when booking our room, we already had a good feeling about Villa 121. What awaited us upon arrival was far more interesting than what we expected.

The room we initially booked had problems with the bathroom, but before we could discover this firsthand Peggy had already moved us to a bigger room (an entire floor to ourselves actually).

Original artwork is installed throughout the house, which has been restored and maintained as an ongoing work of art itself.

Peggy and Lloyd are great hosts. It was a pleasure sitting in the living room, kitchen, back garden and particularly the front stoop learning about a piece of Harlem’s history as it only enriched our New York experience.
Like staying with family, nothing like a hotel.
And the bed sheets are AMAZINGLY soft.
Looking forward to our next visit!

If you value where and how you stay Villa 121 is the place. A beautifully renovated 19th century brown stone house in a quiet street, Harlem around you to enjoy and explore, perfect connections to downtown Manhattan. And best of all: welcoming, friendly hosts, always ready to talk, help and give good advice. In short: a home, that for us, a retired couple from Finland, set the tone for a rich 9 day stay in New York.
