To some this may sound like Hell. But to me - The pulse of the music from outside the door and the raucous greetings of the chefs, as I push the door open, is Heaven to me.
I love food, and I love a good broth. If you read my reviews, you will see that I really love the combination of great food, appropriate decor and happy staff. Add to that, a loud pounding soundtrack of '80s disco funk, and you have a steaming concoction that makes Totto a favorite.
Totto Ramen is not for everyone. I "get" that. It is a noodle shop, not a restaurant. The noodle experience for me is a solo pursuit. Lunch, or better a evening dinner, if I have the time (yes, waits can be long,) this spot is part of The Plan, for most trips into town.
Food: Limited menu - great broth; pork, chicken or vegetarian with yummy noodles. Cooked right in front of you.
Decor: Classic Japanese noodle bar hole-in-the-wall with New York energy. Sit only at the bar, to be "In the action." There are very few seats. It is dark in this basement. The ceiling is low, the music is loud. The vats of broth are boiling in front of you and the steam is flowing off the noodles.
Staff: Two or three cooks, right behind the bar. Two or three wait staff. All squished into this small space. Everyone is working frantically. The music is pounding, and all are grooving along.
If any of this appeals to you - Go! If not then, yes, stay away.
