“Fantastically comfortable accommodations that is peacefully located across from Columbus Park in the heart of Chinatown.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 14, 2011

This is a wonderful hotel chock full of comfortable amenities, including spacious rooms, in-room refrigerator and free breakfast for two. It's location across from Columbus Park offers a serene setting, considering you are in the heart of Chinatown. Three adults and one 13-year-old big stayed comfortably together in one room for four nights. I highly recommend this hotel!

“Great little hotel.”

This hotel is less than 18 months old and is very clean. The decor is very nice and each room has A/C a flat screen TV, free high speed wifi, a fridge and unusually for the US a kettle and tea and coffee in each room. The staff are great, very friendly and attentive. A free breakfast is included and taken at Mama Cafe just four doors along, it is a choice of eggs in various ways with accompaniments OR pancakes and fruit, tea, coffee or juice. It is an adequate start to the day but is not the unlimited extended buffet some people on here seem to expect. The cafe is well used by locals including police officers who park up outside. The hotel and the cafe have chinese owners

It is worth mentioning that the rooms to the front have a nice view whilst those at the back may not, however whilst the size of the rooms varies, by NYC standards they are a reasonable size. There are some suites and some rooms have a terrace both obviously at extra cost. The hotel is good value for the city.

This is not a large 4* hotel and is without bar, pool etc. So don't expect that.

It is also very important to set expectations regarding the location of this hotel. The area is safe and has easy access to may NYC attractions but don't expect to be just off Times Sq. The hotel is at the bottom of Mulberry St, that is effectively 'Little Italy' however this is adjacent to Chinatown and so the area is a tourist attraction in itself and you have immediate access to many Italian and Chinese restaurants. The immediate area is very chinese, the small hotel facade stands out in a row of chinese shop fronts. Opposite is the small, pleasant Columbus Park where from early morning there are older chinese folk doing there exercises and latter in the day and into the evening playing checkers, other New Yorkers come after working hours to play on the small soccer and basketball pitches. Nearest subways are Chambers St or Canal St, walking from the latter you will pass chinese supermarkets and amazing fresh fish stores with their inherent smells, it is like being in the far east for a few hundred yards. If you don't like that idea, it may not be for you.

The location is excellent for Wall St and the business disctrict, the World Trade Centre (Ground Zero), Battery Park City, walk along the espanade on the Hudson and battery Park where the boats leave for Liberty Island and Ellis Island. It is also close to the Tenement Museum (Recommended) and there is very close access to Brooklyn Bridge, the Transit Authority Transport Musem in Brooklyn is also worth a visit.

This is an excellent small, good value hotel and I would return.

Room Tip: Book early, ask for a room facing the front.

“What a wonderful place to stay!”

Just returned from a trip to NYC and had a wonderful experience at the Hotel Mulberry, and couldn't wait to write to readers of this site!
As previously mentioned in other reviews, if you are not looking closely enough, you could miss the entrance to the hotel. It blends in with other store fronts, but having read this, we were on the lookout. The hotel faces Columbus Square Park and is nestled between businesses. Walking in the door in the heat of the NY summer, the air conditioning blasts you in the face and feels fantastic. The staff at the desk were exceptional!! Always pleasant, helpful and after several days staying here, we actually felt like we were leaving family when we had to go.
There appeared to be 3 rooms on each floor, so the hotel itself is very small and intimate. The lobby is small but comfortable- always cold water and coffee available. The room was larger than we expected from a New York City hotel. Three of us shared the room and we had plenty of space. The beds are fantastic- soft pillow top beds that were great after wandering the city all day. The shower pressure is wonderful as well!! There is a coffee pot in the room, a safe for valuables, and a work desk if needed. If you get a room overlooking the park, it is fun to watch the activity in the park- Tai Chi, basketball, and what looked like some form of low impact Zumba. The Mama restaurant for breakfast is about 3 doors down, and had a nice breakfast menu. The choices included eggs, omelets, french toast and whole wheat pancakes- plain, banana or strawberry. All were served with a small serving of fruit and a drink. Since there were 3 of us and only 2 people eat free, the third breakfast was roughly $7.00. If you prefer, there is a Dunkin Donuts on the other side of the restaurant, for coffee, donuts, etc.
One morning, we woke up to rain and asked the girls at the front desk where we could buy umbrellas. They gave us umbrellas! We were told that we could keep them, but returned them at the end of the day, for future travelers. Check out is at noon, but since we had a later flight, they also took care of our luggage until it was time for us to leave, so we didn't have to lug our things with us throughout the city.
I can not rave enough about this small hotel. Subway stops are a few blocks away, but walking to the subway gave us the opportunity to explore Chinatown. Little Italy and SOHO are also close by and fun to explore.
We will definitely return to this hotel on future visits!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the park.

“Steer clear”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2011

Unfortunately we picked one of the cheapest options on ----. Unfortunately because the experience felt like THE cheapest hotel a respectable website would advertise. Even cheaper. I call the Mulberry a recession hotel due to the low budget decor and lack of comfort. We were requested to move rooms several times due to their incompetent booking system. Of course I refused to play 'musical rooms' on my vacation. Our air conditioning unit packed up the last night in the middle of the 2011 July/August heat wave. SPOIL. Uncapable of fixing it, the 'technician on call' was unable to answer his call. All in all a two out of 5, one star for cleanliness, one for being in close enough to Soho (although the stench made us rub past the fish stall en route every morning)

My family and I just spend four nights at the Mulberry hotel, in NYC Chinatown. The hotel has recently been refurbished ans is very comfortable, the location downtown is very convenient and the people are very friendly and nice. All that for very reasonable rates ! Congratulations.
