“Perfect City hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Excellent hotel located in the heart of Manhattan and in particular Soho. Warm, welcoming staff, cool vibe, great bolthole to which we retreated from busy days and nights for a relax and luxurious sleep. Rooms are standard NY size, but so is everywhere in the town where space is at a premium, but who needs space when you are only sleeping in the room? It would be a travesty to spend any more than sleeping & showering time in your hotel room when staying in NYC.

Extremely cool bar and general decor, can't fault the hotel and would highly recommend it for a city break in the city that never sleeps. Also noted the lovely smell/scent they create somehow in the lobby - a nice touch.

We just returned from a fantastic trip to NY (what could be more beautiful than NY in October?!). I agree with sueshoh10, the hotel is alright, but not really worth the prices they charge (luckily we went for my husband's job, so it was paid for). It is however, in a fantastic location, right in the heart of SoHo. There are two entrances to the hotel, one on Crosby, the other on Lafayette. The Crosby entrance is so beautiful and picturesque, like something you'd see in Europe.......ivy, brick, hanging little lights. But the minute you enter the hotel you wonder what happened, you feel as if you've taken a wrong turn. It's all blue, modern, and frankly odd (not to mention scented candles always burning that smell atrocious). There is no lobby to speak of, you have to go up to another floor for that. If you enter the hotel from the Lafayette side I'm sure you wouldn't know what you are entering, there would be nothing to give you the impression you have entered a hotel. The hotel decor is just so odd, when you get upstairs to where the rooms are the hallways are blue and the mirrors are blue (not the frame, the actual mirror!) and some have sconces attached that have flame shaped bulbs (totally fine) that are red! Really odd. The room is nice, but it's all white and looks more like something that should be in LA, not NY. We just couldn't get over how beautiful the Crosby entrance is and why the hotel interior doesn't match. The odd thing in the rooms are the bathrooms. The door is transparent, and not completely opaque and doesn't ever tightly shut so you never have much privacy. It's very bizarre.
It feels like I'm totally trashing the place, I don't mean to be, but for being in the heart of SoHo and being incredibly spendy, I don't think I would return. On the plus side, I would say if you're going to stay there, ask for a room facing Crosby street, it was TOTALLY quiet at night, you would never know you were staying in downtown NY.
I would have rated this hotel higher had the decor not been so odd and had there been a regular door on the bathroom.

Room Tip: Stay on the Crosby side, it's completely and totally quiet at night.

Overall the hotel is fine, the whole blue theme and feathers is a bit gaudy and tiresome after the
first day. Service and hospitality are all fine. The issues for me is that damn blue! Hope they change it soon. Note to all hotels that carry Malin and Goetz product, "it stinks" and is very masculine. Also, it would be great to have in room tea/coffee service.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the high floors, as there is garbage pick up it seems everyday.

Very comfortable room, friendly staff overall a great stay. Had free breakfast every morning except one morning after a health inspection the restaurant was closed, no other options were given except to go and buy breakfast somewhere else. Which isn't so bad considering you are in the best city in the world for food!

It's hard to believe that you can find a relaxing and quiet spot so close to little Italy and Chinatown in Manhattan. It's only a few blocks away from the metro station. We had breakfast in the restaurant, which was one of the highlights of our stay - delicious fresh fruit, good coffee and a beautiful setting. Would go back and advise friends to stay here, even though the rooms were on the small side.

My wife and I stayed here at the suggestion of our son, who works in New York and lives in NoLita. The rates were competitive, so we booked three nights and had a terrific stay. The staff were very helpful and friendly, especially the concierge, for whom we had lots of questions. The hotel is on the southeastern border of SoHo, and so it's very close to Little Italy and Chinatown. The Museum of China in America (MOCA) is right across the street to the east, for example. Our son's business, Soho Strength Lab, is on historic Mulberry Street, so we strolled down Mulberry all the way to Downtown Manhattan, passing through Little Italy, with the wonderful street front restaurants and Chinatown, with its own very different vibe. One day, we walked through SoHo in the other direcection, through Washington Square, the NYU campus, Greenwich Village, Chelsea and the High Line, before heading Uptown to the east side to eat that night taking the subway on the last leg.

The point of saying all this is that the hotel is nicely located for walking the streets of New York, which is what I like most about the city. The cultural variety is so dense that every step is a new discovery. And the places to eat around the hotel are numerous and varied, too. Try Jack's Wife Freda on Lafayette for breakfast, the Italian Food Center on Mulberry for lunch, and Socarrat on Mulberry for a dinner of tapas.

The hotel itself is a happening place. Men's Health Magazine was having some sort of launch party in the hotel's restaurant, Isola, while we were there. Lots of buzz about the place. Our room was upgraded to a suite by the front desk, which was nice, giving us essentially two bedrooms for the price of one. There was an iPad in the room to use to access hotel services. My wife said the gym was nice and fully equipped. Everything worked in the hotel and was clean. No complaints at all. We would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Talk to the front desk to be sure you explore all the options. Higher floors give you a better view...

This hotel is not a 5-star establishment. I´ve been at many different 5-star hotels in different countries around the world, and when booking a 5-star hotel you expect a certain level of service etc.

- No one helped us with our luggage when arriving.

Rooms are very small, which I understand is normal in NY. However, the bathroom consisted of a WC and a shower. The mirror and handwash was located in the room, next to the bed area. This is a hopeless and awkward experiment which is just weird from start to finish. Also, the bathroom is only separated from the bed area by a thin "door", with 2 cm opening in the ends, so the person standing outside the bathroom could see whatever was going on in the WC area. This is also awkward for people who´s not been married for 50 years or longer. Also, no place to put your clothes, only a small "Harry Potter" room with place for one suitcase and a few jackets.

If you want a 5-star experience in New York, stay far away from this overpriced hotel. We did not feel welcome here.
