“Great location, friendly service, efficiently packed rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

Our second stay at this perfectly located for Soho hotel was as good as the first. The modern room on the 16th floor had a great view, very effective layout while holding a very comfy king bed, with complementary wifi and coffee/pastry for breakfast, all at a reasonable price for this level in NYC. The 24/7 gym on the 17th floor, while small has a good mix of aerobic and weight equipment.

My bride and I got married in Manhattan and had a few days for a short honeymoon. So we stayed at the James...What a great way to start our life together. . What a magical place. I mean we were treated like royalty. Everything form the room to the food was wonderful and the staff was fun, not stuffy or uptight like other boutique hotels downtown, . Please go to the James it is a slice of heaven in Manhattan!!

I stayed at the James for 4 nights before Labor Day weekend, and for someone who is a native NYer, now living across country, what's most important to me when visiting my hometown is LOCATION. Then comes service, then amenities, and then food.

This hotel has it all! The views from the rooftop pool, amazing! Room service and David Burke Kitchen, delicious! Staff - friendly and eager to help without the aloofness of other boutique properties I've stayed in. Also, awesome bathroom amenties, and heated floors?!

But above all, the location is what makes this hotel so perfect. Easy access to the A-C-E train, Soho shopping and nightlife at your finger tips, and just off the beaten track of the craziness that is Canal Street.

Comp wireless, fresh coffee, scones, and turndown service are just added bonuses. Love the James, would absolutely stay here again, hopefully soon!!!

Beautiful hotel and perfect for a pre-wedding weekend get-away. The amenities were luxurious and the staff was responsive and thoughtful. They'd turn down our beds and draw the blinds every evening. They even sent complimentary champagne for the soon-to-be-married member of our party! The overall experience was very indulgent... Favorite features from the group: the clean, comfortable bedding, the steady A/C, and the awesome hand shower + rain shower set up.

Overall the hotel and staff were quite nice. But a few glitches ruined the lux feeling. With so many other options available in the area I wouldn't recommend this hotel given the price tag associated with it.

Everyone was super nice and pleasant, but for us it was the actions (or lack of) that spoke louder than words. The main frustration stemmed from a de-evolution of the lux experience over our 3-night stay. Simple things from a plush bath rug on day one to a simple bath mat towel on day two to the cold tile on day three. Another example was two bottles of their "triple filtered water" and a fresh bucket of ice on night one to only one bottle on night two to no ice on night three. Even though we kept the room neat and tidy, maybe housekeeping had it in for us? They turned the AC off on one of the hottest/muggiest days and our last night was quite uncomfortable. When we turned the AC back on it only intermittently blew cool air. We didn't bother calling the front desk since an earlier service call regarding the TV not working went unresolved.

It's too bad we were left with the feeling that things went south after check-in because the property has a terrific design and many of the staff were very helpful in other respects (luggage, transportation, etc.). We travel frequently and typically enjoy our hotel experiences immensely. Even though we made the best of it and still had an incredible visit to the city we would definitely stay somewhere else next time.

Four of us stayed for a week in August, two adults and two teenage kids and generally speaking we loved this hotel but for a couple of niggles.

I booked adjoining rooms, one double and one twin through Virgin Holidays and when we arrived we found that they don't have any twin rooms. No problem, they upgraded us to a room with a very large double bed and a second slightly smaller room which were connected by their own enclosed small hall, so perfect. They also kindly gave us breakfast for our first morning by way of an apology.

Cleanliness

Whatever you've read about this hotel being dusty is just untrue, the floors look dusty but I have to say that the hotel was spotless throughout and I am very fussy, just ask my wife!

Food & Drink

We ate once here for breakfast (our comp breakfast) and once to try the David Burke Kitchen. The breakfast was ok and the food at DBK was overly complicated and a little bit up itself with not a lot of substance but ok. Beware of the cost though, it ain't cheap!

We did have some great cocktails and the wine list is also not bad.

Rooms

Rooms are great and excellently looked after by the maids both sides of the day, with some great views out over Manhattan.

Swimming Pool

The main reason I chose The James was because it had an outdoor pool and to be honest, if that's your criteria too, then you'll be disappointed.

As with many other people, this is where the issue lies. The pool is small and cold but ok for a quick dip to cool off and there is somewhere, albeit very small to catch a few rays (if you get up there early enough to bag a bed).

The drawback arrives with the members of Jimmys. You are told that you have use of the pool until 5pm and this just isn't true. three out of our seven days, we were only able to be there until 2.40pm because of 'private parties" the rest of the time, we were allowed to be there until 5pm but at 4.30 everyone is moved and made to feel very uncomfortable so that the sun-beds can all be lined up and stripped of your towels in readiness for Jimmys' members. Hotel guests are made to feel like second class citizens falling a long way behind Jimmys' members and this smacks of greed on behalf of the hotel.

Jimmys is popular and The James is proud of this fact but as a hotel guest all that means to you is that you will find it hard to get in the lift after about 3.30 in the afternoon and generally you just won't have any access to the pool whatsoever.

I've found this a very tough review to write because I really wanted to be clear in my views, the hotel and most of the staff are great and happy to help but Jimmys and one or two other small gripes left me sure that I would not return.

Room Tip: Make sure you read the reviews about the pool and Jimmys.

Very disappointed with the James hotel. We had a very bad experience with the James. The night manager Christina was rude to the level of being abusive when we complained about the filth in our room. The dirty room was bad, but the response about the complaint was even worse. Christina was not willing to help in any way other to say "I'm sorry." The was no ability to clean the room, change rooms or help in any way. This hotel was a huge disappointment.
