“Not worth the $$$$”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2012

My husband and I stayed at The James for five nights in September. The Hotel is nice enough, but the price tag is beyond what you get for the money. We paid $500 a night, so when the bathroom sink clogged (and stayed that way) for two days and I had to repeatedly call for hand towels (all this AFTER the room had been made up) I began to think we made a mistake. Also, the bar on the roof has become popular and on Saturday night we could hear the party up there until well after midnight. The staff is friendly enough, especially the door men. The continental breakfast is nothing more than two (pump) thermos coffee dispensers and a plate of small scones. We had to ask the staff when the coffee and scones were gone, which was quite often. They also advertise that fresh fruit is served every afternoon....this is a bowl of oranges or apples.
We probably would not choose this hotel again.

Room Tip: Just stay away from the 17th floor (the bar)

Dear Macmusey,

Thank you for taking time to provide feedback. It is regrettable that we missed the mark in exceeding your expectations. The James Club Sky Lobby is a complimentary amenity of light refreshments we offer guests but continental breakfast is available in the full-service adjoining restaurant, David Burke Kitchen. Guest comfort is of utmost importance to us so please accept my sincere apologies for the noise disturbances you experienced. I am, however, very proud to read that our Front Desk team left you with a good impression. Thank you for the valuable feedback. Have a wonderful day.

Best regards,
Jeff Hentze

The James Hotel in Soho is perfectly located. Walking distance to so many great restaurants, the Hudson River, The Highline and always very easy to pick up a cab. The doormen on the front desk were always super helpful and gave so much detail with directions and recommendations. The hotel itself was always spotless and clean and our room was an exceptional size corner suite. The addition of the roof top bar was funky and provided great views over New York. A touch on the expensive side, however the hotel did tick all the boxes.

Dear Yallingupkk,

I wanted to personally reach out to thank you for the kind review. Our location in the lively Soho area and our team members are two features that make our hotel truly special so I am very happy you were able to appreciate both. I would have to agree with you on the area, the variety of restaurants, galleries, and retail is unbeatable. Our Lobby Assistants will also appreciate the special mention. Thank you and until your next stay.

Best regards,

The hotel is fine and has some good points...but for the nearly $500 + taxes so it should be. It's quite trendy with artworks on all floors and has a nice garden a level up from the street. The bar on the top floor is a nice place to hang out but don't expect too much in the way of service...and the plastic glasses are a little downmarket (I understand about the pool area). The pool, if you are planning to use it, is better described as a large ornamental bath...good for hopping into but that is it. The rooms are well enough appointed but quite compact (not ridiculously so) and the walls are quite thin. The hotel's dog friendly ...which is great for dogs and their owners...not good if you are within barking or snuffling distance. The windows would also appear to be single glazed so it can get quite noisy from the street. Rooms were clean, food was very good, Lobby staff helpful. Would I stay again? Don't think so. Would I eat in the adjoining restaurant? Absolutely. Would I go up to the roof for a good view over SOHO and a sundowner? Yes.

Stayed at The James with my husband for 2 nights while he was in the city for business. Really enjoyed our stay. Location is terrific-how can you go wrong with SOHO! Room was clean and loved the floor to ceiling windows. I really can't say enough about the staff-so friendly and helpful. No attitude or snobbiness that can be found at other boutique hotels. Definitely look forward to coming back again!!

Inside and outside area on roof. Also a terrace bar downstairs. We had a great time except the doorman wouldn't let one of our guy friends in. He probably showed attitude to the doorman and deserved not to be let in. ;)
Next to cool bars and restaurants. Hot people.
Swimming pool on roof.
$700 a night for a room that's not large.... welcome to NY.

Room Tip: Corner king studio has nice views.

Dear Charitita,

Thank you for taking time to share your experience. It’s great to read that you were able to enjoy one feature that makes our property special, JIMMY. I would have to agree with you, the views from guestrooms and the roof are impeccable. New York City is typically tight with space but our guestrooms’ loft ambiance and open windows hopefully make up for it. We look forward to welcoming you back and thanks again.

My wife and I spent 8 nights at The James last August. We are 71 years old and was our first time there.
My daughter indicated to us and we enjoyed it very much. We used to stay at some big hotels in Midtown NYC and The James at Soho is a nice place to stay.
We prefer to travel by bus in NYC instead of Subway. In a short walk from the hotel we use to take the M5 bus to Midtown at 6th Avenue and we returned back taking the M20 bus at 7th Avenue.
We recomed that hotel.

Dear AriesBorges,

I’m very pleased that you loved the location of The James. It’s definitely one of the major features that makes our hotel so special. To be near all of the shopping, restaurants, coffee shops, and sites of Soho is hard to beat and definitely less stressful than the Times Square and Mid-Town areas. Please send our sincerest gratitude to your daughter for recommending us. Until your next stay!

Warm regards,
Jeff Hentze
