My wife and I recently returned from New York and stayed in the SHIVA suite of the Sanctuary Guest Suites on Stanton Street for 7 nights.
The room was exactly as pictured on the web site and was actually a little more spacious than we expected.
The Sanctuary Suites is built upon a Hindu/yoga/well-being theme. All the rooms are named after Hindu gods and there are daily yoga sessions on the Ground floor, with people travelling from different states to attend!
Overall we enjoyed our stay here and would definitely staying again when visiting New York – I’ll go into more detail about the the suite, staff, local area and Metro system…I apologise now for the lengthy read!
This is not your average apartment and has staff on site who are exceptionally helpful and will help with booking cabs and printing out boarding passes.
Breakfast is served between 9am and 10am (I think!) and consists of cereals, fruit and yoghurts – all in keeping with healthy lifestyle the venue promotes.
They will ensure a member of staff is available to take you to your apartment when you arrive. If you are arriving after 6pm or so you need to ensure you inform them of your flight details and call when you land (assuming you are flying to New York). This is important as the staff don’t live at the suites and will arrange for someone to meet you there.
THE SHIVA SUITE
As we stayed in the Shiva suite I can’t really comment on the others. As I mentioned the suite was as shown in the pictures on the web site.
The room was clean and well lit.
The bed was big and comfortable,
There are plenty of power pointsin the apartment
The bathroom was a good size with soap, shampoo and conditioner provided. There were also plenty of fresh towels. A basic hair dryer is provided in the bathroom too.
The kitchen area is also a reasonable size, with an absolutely huge oven! There is also a filter coffee machine and kettle.
There is a reasonable amount of storage….just!
Ironing facilities are provided.
There is a huge 40-inch TV (with just basic channels) and a useful iPod dock/clock. Free wifi is provided which is of course, very useful.
With the addition of the patio, the apartment is very cosy and comfortable for lounging and relaxing in.
While the bathroom is a good size, the shower lacks in power so expect to spend a little more time than usual! There are also no hooks to hang your clothes.
There is only one mirror in the apartment and it is located in the bathroom. While the mirror is pretty big for a bathroom, it is not a full length mirror. I understand that none of the rooms have full length mirrors.
Heating – there is a large air-con unit in the room, but it does not effectively heat the apartment, so if you are visiting in winter (as we did) and feel the chill a bit more then dress up warm. Of course in the warmer months this is not a problem.
….Sadly there are no baking trays to go with that huge oven!
LOCAL AREA & GETTING AROUND
Stanton Street is located in the Lower East Side (LES) area of Manhattan and there a few noteworthy restaurants:
Clinton Street Bakery:
Just a couple of minutes’ walk away on Clinton Street is the Clinton Street Bakery. This is an absolute must for anyone staying at the Sanctuary Guest Suites and is a well known New York restaurant/cafe. Their breakfast and brunch are exceptional and there is regularly a queue, even as early as 9:30am on a week day. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations, so get there early or put your name down and chill in your suite for a while!
El Mugaey Y La Tuna:
This is another must visit restaurant when staying in the LES area and is also a couple of minutes round the corner from the apartment on East Houston Street. El Mugaey is a small family run Mexican restaurant serving quite superb and authentic Mexican home cooking. Their sauces and guacamole are lovely and home-made to a family recipe. If you are staying at the weekend they have a brunch menu packed with fantastic flavours that will rival the best restaurants.
A little further up East Houston Street is the Remedy Diner which is open 24 hours and serves a huge variety of American dishes. We went here once for breakfast and once for dinner when it got late. The food is quite good and the portions, of course, are huge!
If you are looking for local fine dining then there is the renowned Michelin starred WD50 restaurant on Clinton Street which is well worth a visit.
There are a plethora of bars within a few minutes’ walk of the apartment, sadly we didn’t get a chance to go to any. But you could quite easy have a pub/bar crawl and visit 3 or 4 bars while never walking more than 10 minutes!
NEW YORK METRO
The closest Metro station to Sanctuary Guest Suites is Delancey St/Essex St, about 6-8 mins walk away and you can get to the Rockerfeller Centre/Times Square in about 15 mins! However, not all journeys are as straightforward and I made the mistake of assuming that the world famous New York Metro would be as easy to navigate as the London and Paris Metro systems….it isn’t!
Make sure you keep a map with you because once you go through the barriers at any station there are NO maps, timetables or travel information. In many instances you will not be informed of line closures either while waiting on the platform. The platform will indicate which Metro lines it services and most importantly which direction they are going in – you have to just know which actual stations each line will go through and where you need to change in advance.
It’s worth noting the following:-
Delancey St/Essex St (Lines F, J, M & Z) – are located in the DOWNTOWN area of Manhattan which means that everything towards central Manhattan/Central Park is classified as UPTOWN. Remember this when trying to work out which direction to go in. The M line does not run at the weekends and several lines do not service all stations along their routes on a Sunday. Check on this prior to travelling.
…..If you’ve read this far then I hope the information has been useful! For my wife and I the Sanctuary Guest Suites are competitively priced, comfortable, well maintained & managed and in an excellent area of the city.
