“Ideal Property in Manhattan”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 22, 2013

My wife and I recently returned from New York and stayed in the SHIVA suite of the Sanctuary Guest Suites on Stanton Street for 7 nights.

The room was exactly as pictured on the web site and was actually a little more spacious than we expected.

The Sanctuary Suites is built upon a Hindu/yoga/well-being theme. All the rooms are named after Hindu gods and there are daily yoga sessions on the Ground floor, with people travelling from different states to attend!

Overall we enjoyed our stay here and would definitely staying again when visiting New York – I’ll go into more detail about the the suite, staff, local area and Metro system…I apologise now for the lengthy read!

STAFF/BREAKFAST

This is not your average apartment and has staff on site who are exceptionally helpful and will help with booking cabs and printing out boarding passes.

Breakfast is served between 9am and 10am (I think!) and consists of cereals, fruit and yoghurts – all in keeping with healthy lifestyle the venue promotes.

They will ensure a member of staff is available to take you to your apartment when you arrive. If you are arriving after 6pm or so you need to ensure you inform them of your flight details and call when you land (assuming you are flying to New York). This is important as the staff don’t live at the suites and will arrange for someone to meet you there.

THE SHIVA SUITE

As we stayed in the Shiva suite I can’t really comment on the others. As I mentioned the suite was as shown in the pictures on the web site.

Good Points:
The room was clean and well lit.
The bed was big and comfortable,
There are plenty of power pointsin the apartment
The bathroom was a good size with soap, shampoo and conditioner provided. There were also plenty of fresh towels. A basic hair dryer is provided in the bathroom too.
The kitchen area is also a reasonable size, with an absolutely huge oven! There is also a filter coffee machine and kettle.
There is a reasonable amount of storage….just!
Ironing facilities are provided.
There is a huge 40-inch TV (with just basic channels) and a useful iPod dock/clock. Free wifi is provided which is of course, very useful.

With the addition of the patio, the apartment is very cosy and comfortable for lounging and relaxing in.

Negatives/Inconveniences:
While the bathroom is a good size, the shower lacks in power so expect to spend a little more time than usual! There are also no hooks to hang your clothes.

There is only one mirror in the apartment and it is located in the bathroom. While the mirror is pretty big for a bathroom, it is not a full length mirror. I understand that none of the rooms have full length mirrors.

Heating – there is a large air-con unit in the room, but it does not effectively heat the apartment, so if you are visiting in winter (as we did) and feel the chill a bit more then dress up warm. Of course in the warmer months this is not a problem.

….Sadly there are no baking trays to go with that huge oven!

LOCAL AREA & GETTING AROUND

Stanton Street is located in the Lower East Side (LES) area of Manhattan and there a few noteworthy restaurants:

Clinton Street Bakery:
Just a couple of minutes’ walk away on Clinton Street is the Clinton Street Bakery. This is an absolute must for anyone staying at the Sanctuary Guest Suites and is a well known New York restaurant/cafe. Their breakfast and brunch are exceptional and there is regularly a queue, even as early as 9:30am on a week day. Unfortunately they don’t take reservations, so get there early or put your name down and chill in your suite for a while!

El Mugaey Y La Tuna:
This is another must visit restaurant when staying in the LES area and is also a couple of minutes round the corner from the apartment on East Houston Street. El Mugaey is a small family run Mexican restaurant serving quite superb and authentic Mexican home cooking. Their sauces and guacamole are lovely and home-made to a family recipe. If you are staying at the weekend they have a brunch menu packed with fantastic flavours that will rival the best restaurants.

Remedy Diner:
A little further up East Houston Street is the Remedy Diner which is open 24 hours and serves a huge variety of American dishes. We went here once for breakfast and once for dinner when it got late. The food is quite good and the portions, of course, are huge!

WD50:
If you are looking for local fine dining then there is the renowned Michelin starred WD50 restaurant on Clinton Street which is well worth a visit.

BARS!
There are a plethora of bars within a few minutes’ walk of the apartment, sadly we didn’t get a chance to go to any. But you could quite easy have a pub/bar crawl and visit 3 or 4 bars while never walking more than 10 minutes!

NEW YORK METRO
The closest Metro station to Sanctuary Guest Suites is Delancey St/Essex St, about 6-8 mins walk away and you can get to the Rockerfeller Centre/Times Square in about 15 mins! However, not all journeys are as straightforward and I made the mistake of assuming that the world famous New York Metro would be as easy to navigate as the London and Paris Metro systems….it isn’t!

Make sure you keep a map with you because once you go through the barriers at any station there are NO maps, timetables or travel information. In many instances you will not be informed of line closures either while waiting on the platform. The platform will indicate which Metro lines it services and most importantly which direction they are going in – you have to just know which actual stations each line will go through and where you need to change in advance.

It’s worth noting the following:-
Delancey St/Essex St (Lines F, J, M & Z) – are located in the DOWNTOWN area of Manhattan which means that everything towards central Manhattan/Central Park is classified as UPTOWN. Remember this when trying to work out which direction to go in. The M line does not run at the weekends and several lines do not service all stations along their routes on a Sunday. Check on this prior to travelling.

…..If you’ve read this far then I hope the information has been useful! For my wife and I the Sanctuary Guest Suites are competitively priced, comfortable, well maintained & managed and in an excellent area of the city.

I was very disappointed in this hotel/apartment after reading all the stellar reviews on Trip Advisor. I was attracted by neighborhood, price, and amenities. What appears to be a beautiful apartment from photos is really just so-so. Not bad, not good. Lots of details need to be attended to, and the beds were the absolute worst hard as rock beds I've slept on in a long time. Pillows were just as bad. No WiFi as promised and the television was out the entire 5 days, which was not acceptable to me. The management was lovely and did offer a small refund.

This was our first stay at the Sanctuary Suites. What a delightful place to stay! The quiet "zen" feeling permeates the entire space. Our apartment looked just like the picture. (RAJA)...simply furnished with many amenities... ipod docking station, comfy bed, comfortable sleep sofa, kitchen with lots of appliances (coffee maker, electric teapot, blender, microwave, full sized stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher.) The linens were crisp and fluffy... including a nice throw for the sofa. The staff couldn't have been nicer. They made sure that we had everything we needed. They also connected us with a car service that was a lot less expensive than a cab. The apartments are connected to a yoga studio. I enjoyed a free yoga class one morning. There are many great restaurants in the area for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We picked up food for dinner one night from a local Whole Foods and ate in restaurants the other 2 nights. We definitely will return and recommend the Sanctuary to our friends!

Room Tip: The suites are all different so select the one that matches your needs. We wanted a sofa and a comf...

I was pleasantly surprised when I stayed at the Stanton St Sanctuary. I will definitely be staying there next time I go to NYC. The apartment I had (Rama) was spotless, the beds were super comfortable and overall spacious. There is also a free yoga session thrown in and breakfast.

We stayed at SGS twice, both times we loved it. The location is great. There are very nice restaurants around the hotel and it is in a very beautiful part of NYC. Each room/flat comes with a comfy queen bed, stylish French doors that separates the bedroom from the living area, kitchen with culinary amenities, a nice bathroom with organic soaps and shampoo that I love and beautiful Indian folk art decorations. We stayed in Shanti Suits and Nirvana room. They were both spacious, spotless clean and lovely! Everything was as is shown in the photos. The building is an old red-brick NY style one and very cozy and quiet. The next building is the Hell Angels' building, but we haven't seen them much around.(Just make sure not to sit on their bench in front of their building!) The breakfast was included but do not expect a big one, it's simple, usually organic and vegetarian/vegan style food. But there are amazing breakfast places all around the East Village. Recently SGS opened a new branch in Stanton Street which we'll be visiting soon. Great place to stay!

I stayed here multiple times now and this is my go-to when in NYC. I was actually one of the first guest who checked in when they first opened!
So far I have stayed in Govinda, Rama and Sita. Govinda is still one of my favourite, it is spacious (easily accommodate up to 5-6), with full size kitchen, comfy queen bed and duvets, even the pull out couch are firm and comfy. Although staff is not on site 24/7, they are responsive and house keeping is excellent. Only shower in the bathroom which is okay. Location is perfect. price is reasonable for NYC standard.

Negative reviews of the Nitay apartment had me concerned, but one look at our big, comfortable rooms made me quite pleased. It was perfect for us. Two double beds, separated by French doors, plus a pull-out futon; lots of closet space, full kitchen. Simple, attractive decor with exposed brick walls. It's a push to get up the 3 flights of steep stairs, so this apartment is not for everyone, but we loved it. We stayed during the week and noise was not a problem. As so many have said, Zach and Vishnu couldn't be more friendly or helpful. The neighborhood is fascinating & trendy, with lots of small shops; we enjoyed being next to the Hell's Angels HQ, dedicated to one Big Vinny, whose motto, "when in doubt, knock 'em out", is written on a plaque over the door.
