“Fun city hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2014

Love this hotel. Excellent location on Fifth Ave within walking distance of everything in Midtown and Upper Manhattan. Several good places to eat close by including the hotel restaurant. The rooms are like a SoHo loft apt complete with a small kitchen. Very fun and funky, too.
The service from the staff was excellent. It was an anniversary weekend for us. We received a lovely bottle of wine and locally made candies.
This is a Hyatt hotel property. And, there is also one located is the financial district of NY.

I had a great time staying at the Andaz. It was clean and comfortable and the location superb. They included all the non-alcoholic drinks in the room and also the wifi was free. The staff was always more than helpful and the coffee shop on the hotel lobby was spectacular. I will be staying at the Andaz again and again!

Stayed at Andaz 5th with my children on a weekend trip from Boston. Excellent location just opposite NY Public Library and within walking distance to Times Square, Grand Central, Empire State, Rockerfellar and major shops. The Andaz suite is top class. Subtle yet elegant. The Andaz hosts are very engaged, warmth
and friendly. Took a taxing from Penn Station less than five minutes ride. Ate breakfast at their cafe and the price is good value for
a top class hotel. Will certainly be back.

The hotel currently has no lobby which may be the main reason it is completely disorganized. I would advise anyone thinking of staying here to wait till they at least finish remodeling the lobby.
Currently the entrance is a single door into a narrow space where the check in is a square table by the elevators. The staff seems to wear whatever they want so its very hard to determine who is actually working there. Turn down service (that is anyone who comes by the room later in the day after 3:00 PM to check on towels etc.) is non existent. The hotel rooms are ultramodern to the point of not being utilitarian. For example there is this wall of doors between the room and bathroom making late night use of the bathroom/toilet a hassle. The toilet does not have a separate door making privacy an issue. The bed is not very comfortable. The TV system is not HD. We had breakfast at the The Shop in the Hotel and it was bizarre - I ordered the porridge with raisins - the raisins were dried on the vine - so a small vine of raisins was plopped on top of the porridge - effectively more of a decoration than raisins. Very strange. I would not stay here again - unfortunately Im staying at the Andaz in Maui next week - maybe that will be better??

Dear EricLosAngeles,

Thank you for your honest feedback and I’m sorry to hear of your disappointment with Andaz 5th Avenue during your recent stay with us.

You are correct that we were undergoing maintenance on our main entrance doors and therefore guests were redirected to use the smaller side entrance. Our intentions were to minimalize as much inconvenience to guests in our process of beautifying our entry doors, but it seems as though we failed in creating a comfortable environment from upon arrival for you.

Though the hotel’s décor receives many accolades, there are some individuals who are not particular fans of Tony Chi’s design concept for the hotel. As we are unable to create new additional walls or doors in the bathroom at this time, we appreciate your comments about the design so that we can begin planning for these additional features for our future guestroom renovations.

I’m sorry your negative experience extended to breakfast at The Shop as we pride ourselves in sourcing the freshest ingredients from the finest purveyors in the city. After speaking with our Director of Food & Beverage, we would like to host you during your next visit to re-experience breakfast at The Shop.

I know that from your comments, you stated that you would not return to the hotel, but I hope that you will reconsider and give us another chance to showcase our true spirit of hospitality that should have been provided during your last stay. We are thankful for your loyalty to the Andaz brand and wish you a wonderful time at our sister property in Maui and would be happy to reach out to ensure you are taken care of during your visit.

I look forward to hearing back from you and please do not hesitate to contact me directly should you wish to speak further.

Kind regards,
Ratna

My boyfriend and i stayed here for a 5 night city break in late May. The location was what made us choose this property and it didn't disappoint, very central, less than a 5 minute walk to Grand Central and the subway and many attractions were within walking distance.
We arrived at around midnight in the pouring rain and there was no doorman and nobody to help us with our luggage so we got soaked dragging all our bags inside. Once inside the guy on reception was very friendly but there was still no offer of assistance with our bags, despite the fact we had 4 between the 2 of us and we were soaked through.
Our room was very modern and spacious enough for a New York hotel room, however there was very little storage space, closet or draws so we had to leave many of our clothes in our cases
pushed under the desk. The bathroom was virtually the same size as the rest of the room with a
great rain fall shower and a twin vanity. However i would have traded a bit of the bathroom for
some more closet space.

Over the 5 nights we didn't really partake in many of the hotels other facilities as we were busy
enjoying the city, so i can't comment on those. We did however take advantage of the
complimentary wine on offer in the reception/lounge of an evening which was a lovely touch and
no doubt saved us a fair few dollars based on how pricey wine can be in NYC. All the staff we
encountered were very friendly especially the lovely chap who helped us store our bags on the
last day and fetched us drinks whilst we waited for our car to the airport (apologies I didn't get his name).
All in all it was a wonderful stay but as I said in the title it just needed a few touches to transport it to an excellent stay in my opinion.

Wow.

Let me preface this review by saying that ordinarily we would have never been able to afford this place. This hotel was way out of price range, but we signed up for the Hyatt credit card and got two free nights. Talk about getting our money's worth. We visited between Christmas and New Year's when the smallest rooms go for over $500/night.

The staff could have put us in a regular room since we were redeeming for free nights, but instead they updated us to an absolutely incredible mini-apartment (at least that's what I'm calling it!). Giant living room, giant bedroom, giant bathroom, ceilings at least 20 feet high, TVs everywhere, huge open windows with a ledge you can sit on, comfortable bed, FREE SNACKS (major brownie points!) -- it was incredible. New York is known for being cramped, but our room was wide open.

This was most definitely the trendiest, most fancy hotel we've ever stayed at outside of Vegas. And such a great location too, right across the street from the New York Public Library and Bryant Park (which is great during the holidays when the ice rink is set up).

We couldn't have asked for a better stay!

We stayed in one of the expensive Splash Suites. I know it is a hotel in the middle of the city, but it was very loud in the room. What surprised us most, was the condition of the furniture. I have posted some pictures. The upholstery was worn and in some places even torn off.

I also agree with the poster who noted that it is difficult to find the entrance to the hotel.

It is a good location and the staff is helpful. But I certainly was expecting the room to be in better repair for this class of hotel.

Room Tip: High floor, lower floors have lots of traffic noise. We didn't have a choice unfortunately.

I am sincerely sorry about the condition of the furniture in your room! Please know that we are actually currently in the process of upgrading all of our guest room chairs but unfortunately had not yet changed the ones in the suite you stayed in. Once again my humble apologies.

I hope that you will give us another chance on a future stay in the city. Please contact me directly should you wish to make a reservation so I can make sure that you are well looked after. Please contact me at: ratna.steden@andaz.com.
