“San Fermin, known as Saint Fermin in my book.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2013

Here's the backstory of how we came across San Fermin B&B: My fiance and I originally booked a room (a completely separate and unrelated to San Fermin B&B) in NYC to attend her graduation at Columbia University. Excited and prepared for travels, we made final calls to confirm arrangements. Low and behold (sound the horns....dun dun duuuuunn!)....We had the misfortune of being scammed and left hanging with less than 24 hours to locate a place to stay. It was 10:00 am on a Sunday with a departure time of Monday morning at 6:00 am from Austin, Texas. After searching and contacting several hotels, bed and breakfasts, hostels that were reasonably priced for the extended stay of 4 nights...we found San Fermin.

Bernado and Maite exemplify and set the standard for kindred, generous and compassionate hosts. Within an hour of phone calls (he gave me his direct cell phone number.....10 digits...not an office line....a cell phone), texts and emails that included information about rates, length of stay, photos of each room and location, we were set. Aware of our reservations to provide payment information over the phone, Bernado asked us to pay when we arrived.....and after seeing the apartment.

***Insert angelic harmony*** We were greeted with warm welcomes, handshakes...in English and Spanish. And....we got more than what we were seeking. A full apartment unit: One-bed room with A/C, closet with more than sufficient storage for all our items, kitchen, fully-furnished living room, and a bathroom with running hot water. The apartment was quiet, clean, accessible, comfortable for two individuals and a very beautifuly modern space (the photos of the apartments are very accurate). We realized we had overpacked when noticing that the bathroom included shampoo, conditioner, towels etc. The location was great too. We were able to access subway trains just a few blocks away, a quick cab ride to and from Columbia University, and good food in the surrounding community. Note: it is located in a beautiful community in Harlem with a lot of great and friendly people who congratulated my wonderful fiance on her recent commencement from Columbia.

Which brings me to Maite, a talented and kind photographer. I curiously enjoyed observing photos of New York in the stairway and around the apartment unit. We were very pleased to hear who Maite was and, after meeting her, she asked if she could take a few photos of my fiance prior to the graduation. The photos were great and nice keepsake to remind us of Bernado and Maite's hospitality and generosity.

This may sound overdramatic, but San Fermin B&B was a saintly and timely recue. Bernardo and Maite saved a big day for us. Thank you. We highly recommend it to anyone. And we certainly have found our place to stay for future visits to NYC.

This was our first trip to New York, and when planning the trip we realised the price level of hotels and b&b's very soon which is 2x higher than in London, and 3x higher than in smaller cities.

San Fermin is a very good option for the price even it is located in Harlem, away from most of the tourist attractions. Public transportation is good and fast.

I am aware that all the previous users have given five or four stars to this place, and I am the first one to give three. Sorry! It is clean, yes, friendly, yes, reasonably priced for New York, yes.

On the downside, our apartment upstairs was directly connected to the public staircase without a proper wall, and we were very much aware that our voices could be heard all over the place.

Some additional pieces of furniture in the rooms could be nice, an armchair for example.

The fee was paid in cash, and (we are getting used to this in America) we did not receive any receipt for the payment. For Northern Europeans this is always a bad sign.

As I do not have experience in other New York b&b's, it could very well be that it was excellent alternative for this city but ordinary elsewhere.

My husband and I recently stayed at this beautiful Apartment and had a truly fantastic time there.
Perfectly located in a very cool area (Harlem – Sugar Hill), stimulating and very safe, with little traffic and nice little shops.
This apartment was absolutely perfect: good size, second floor (no lift), clean modern, attractive décor, well maintained and well equipped. We only use the kitchen facilities for breakfast but it was well appointed.
Heating was flawless, the bedroom was modern and a truly heavenly shower system helped relax after a day out.
Bernardo made us feel very welcomed and relaxed. He was the best host ever, he made sure we had everything we needed. He even gave us maps of NY and suggested places to visit.

I would highly recommend staying at San Fermin Apartment and we look forward to our next visit

We booked San Fermin as its reviews on Trip Adviser were better than some of the 5 star New York hotels.

Bernardo and Maite were perfect hosts for our first trip to New York. Bernardo met us following our arrival at San Fermin and carried our cases to room 1a which was exactly as described on their website and met our expectations. We explained to Bernardo that we had an itinerary for our trip and after we settled in he explained how to purchase subway tickets and navigate the subway system.

Bernardo was available every morning to give guidance on which subway train to catch and which station to get off at for the venue we were visiting that day. His knowledge of New York is vast and he also gave us a map of the city and directions how to get there. On our “free days”, he gave us information about sites to visit which are not well known to tourists. Throughout our stay, Bernardo checked if everything was OK with our apartment and if there was anything else he could do for us.

Early one morning we left for a trip to Philadelphia and hadn’t had time to wash up. When we returned back to the apartment late at night, it was a pleasant surprise to find the washing up had been done.

Essentials such as coffee, tea, shower gel, shampoo, conditioner, hand wash, washing up liquid and kitchen/toilet rolls were provided. The local stores are open “all hours” to purchase an array of food and other necessities as needed.

At the end of our stay, our flight home wasn’t until the evening. Bernardo kept our cases safely for us until departure and arranged a taxi to take us to the airport.

Our stay in San Fermin apartments could not have been better. We highly recommend it and would stay there again if we return to New York.

Room Tip: 1a is a quiet room located at the rear of the property overlooking the garden.

We had a memorable stay in this wonderful private guest house in Harlem, New York. Bernardo and his wife (photographer) were attentive hosts and we enjoyed staying with them very much for 7 days. The place has a lot of flair and if you are looking for an accommodation with atmosphere in a very busy city, this is a perfect choice. Bernardo is most helpful in identifying and recommending nice restaurants and places to see aside the usual New York itinerary.

Although San Fermin is located uptown near 145th street, the subway or the bus (150m around the corner) makes it easy to travel around. The area is safe and cool.

We look forward to coming back.

Room Tip: They are all good. We stayed in 2 A on the upper floor.

Nicely furnished, well-maintained, comfortable. It's remarkably quiet, on a side street but just a minutes walk from restaurants and other businesses in Hamilton Heights, and from the A Train to anywhere in New York. Bernardo is ready with whatever assistance you need. We'll definitely stay again next trip to New York.

We stayed with Bernado for a week in November and we couldn't have been happier. The apartment was palacial for NY standards (hotel rooms and apartments are minuscule in downtown) and very modern. The shower in the bathroom was amazing! The bed was very comfy and the little kitchenette and living room were a godsend at the beginning and end of busy days.

Location wise, Bernardo's apartment is fantastic. The subway blue line station is just around the corner and there are a couple of fantastic restaurants within walking distance. Harlem is a lovely neighborhood and it feels like a real community. It is incredibly safe. Even when walking around the streets and using the subway late at night. Ignore those who are incredulous when you say you are staying in Harlem - it has changed a great deal since the '70s!

Bernardo is a fabulous host and provides great advice on interesting, off-the-beaten-track activities and sights in NY. He is incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable.

5 stars all round!!
