“Lovely property, just a little off Times Square”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

I stayed here last summer when dropping off my daughter for a college summer program, and am slow in getting around to my reviews.

I had a wonderful stay at this lovely modern hotel, with a spacious room and lovely amenities. Nice view, two divinely comfortable queen beds, quiet. Staff was pleasant and efficient with check in; I didn't need any other assistance.

It's only a little walk to Times Square, not terribly far. It's not in the thick of the neon and hubbub, which is a pleasant break from that nonstop action. It was convenient to the subway and attractions.

Booked this hotel as I wanted something near Times Square and needed to use a Southwest Vacations gift certificate. Note: Southwest Vacation gift certificates cannot be used on air fair only and must be used with vacation packages. Then - you have to pay for your vacation package via credit card and send your gift certificate back via snail mail and wait for a credit. I do not recommend this. I picked this "package" because it worked best for my son and I - however if I had booked airfare and hotel separately it would have been $20 less. Plus, it took too days to book due to "technical errors" on the Southwest Vacation site - that they blamed on the hotel - who knows. Anyway - this is the main reason we ended up at this hotel.

The hotel was fine. King bed - corner room - 23 floor. Could still hear traffic noise - but it is NYC - FYI. The room was clean and current and well maintained. Do not touch the mini-bar unless you want to pay for simply touching items in the mini bar. This is well documented in reviews and we were warned at check-in. So - don't plan on using the mini bar fridge to keep anything cold that you bring….. They will charge you for whatever you remove even if you don't consume it or it won't spoil…..

The common areas of the hotel were very nice. I have to agree with some of the reviews about the front desk. There is this huge (and probably structurally unavoidable) pillar that blocks the front dest area. This causes staff to call people to the front desk who they can see - but who may not be next in line. Once I went to the desk directly (to ask for a subway map) and was directed back behind the pillar in a very rude manner. It was embarrassing…. Many guests later (many who came after me) I got my map. Total waste of time. They need to fix this.

Also, the room cards were regularly desensitized. I had to get three sets of keys over a three night stay. I was told repeatedly by front desk staff to keep keys away from my phone (they were nowhere near my or my son's phones). So again….. three more times waiting in the annoying front desk line.

Also, to get to your room, you have to use your room key in the elevator. A great safety precaution that I've used in many other locations. However, at this hotel, half the time the keys would not work in the elevator for anyone in the elevator. It became a joke among elevator riders who could get their key to work and how fast we could reach over each other to push our room floors. A total nuisance. Note: you can only insert your key on one side of the elevator so that results in every passenger reaching over each other in an attempt to insert their key and press their floor button. Very strange….. you will also learn that everyone has trouble with their room keys in the elevator and at their room door as you become fast friends with total strangers over this unique frustration.

Our room rate with our "package" was in the $350 plus range. For families - no pool, no free breakfast, but it is very close to Times Square and literally above a Shake Shack (expect long lines), next to a subway entrance (42nd St), and very close to all kinds of restaurants, drug stores, and if you go south on 8th street, a men's club and porn shop….. FYI.

If I got a good rate I might stay there again as I know know my way around NYC from that location. The subway and overall location is convenient. The hotel is lovely and up to date. Room was very nice despite my issues above. Overall it was fine - but nothing "warm and friendly" if that is at all important to you…

Room Tip: Our corner room had excellent views.

Just checked into this hotel for a three night stay. I booked through the IHG 1-800 # and upon check-in the counter had me in a Superior Corner which is NOT what I booked or paid for. I called IHG who confirmed I was to be in a Sky View Corner. Long story short, I'm still not in the right room. Furthermore, the room I'm in is not clean. Hair everywhere. Very disappointing way to start our NYC vacation espesh at the price I paid and the lackluster room I received!

Great location, room, and view. Service needs some attention.

This was our first stay at ANY Intercontinental. Traveling to NYC about twice a year, we have stayed in about a dozen properties over the last fifteen years. Old faithful are the Waldorf-Astoria and the W Lexington for consistent service at the perfect price. However, from the Intercontinental brand, we were excited to visit, and expected more. We paid about $375 a night as this was purchased through a charity auction that the Intercontinental was supporting. Kudos to Intercontinental for that, as I think it was a local school they were supporting. So, for about $750 we got two nights with breakfast included. Less than we could have booked it online that week (more like $400 a night).

We contacted the hotel before we arrived and stressed that the most important thing we require in a hotel stay is a clean, crisp room. Cleanliness is the ONLY thing we ask, they rest are all extras to us. Overall, the room was clean, with a beautiful bathroom. The bed was comfortable with nice bath amenities. Super view (see picture). 24-hour work-out room, SUPER breakfast buffet. Large bar/sitting area with a nice modern fireplace. No spa, or pool, on site.

The location (just off Times Square) is the property’s best draw. But if location is all that matters, you might want to keep looking as there are nearby options for MUCH LESS, with better service.

As for service, not so outstanding or consistent. Front desk was cold, bordering on aggressive, and even rude at times, in our opinion. This is one of the only 4-star NYC property we have stayed at that did not welcome us, ask if we had questions, or described the property at all. No welcome at all, just “next in line” and a set of keys, and we were on our way to the elevator. The front desk is very WEAK. All three times we needed assistance from the front desk ...we would not describe the reception as hospitable, or even vaguely kind. More like cold, but generally efficient.

A few shout outs for great service - Taj and Vladimir were very kind and helpful!

At $350 0r $400 a night, sorry to say, you might keep looking.

First off, the location is great! It sits on the corner of 44th Street and 8th Avenue with a subway station right next to it. You can walk to all the spots in the Times Square area or hop the subway to get anywhere you want to go. It is close to Times Square without any of the noise and is perfect for shows ,dinners or sightseeing. The King room we had was very spacious and the shower was great which is always a concern for me.
There were a couple of glitches that are worth mentioning though. First off, they have a "Green Program" in place for the towels, yet the maid changed them every day even though I specifically hung them back up to dry. If you want to go "Green", then teach your staff the correct policy. Secondly, the maid never vacuumed our room the entire stay. On the first day I ate a couple of Black and White cookies and swept the crumbs onto the carpet. as of this morning, the crumbs were still on the carpeting 4 days later! Also, and this is not the fault of the hotel, there was a smoker in one of the rooms and was blowing their smoke into the air ducts. This smoke would then enter our room via the ventilation system. I called the front desk and security came up, but they could not do anything about it except move us to a different room. This is a non-smoking hotel that charges $200 if they catch you, but I would suggest a harsher penalty of a $1000 in order to make these smokers think twice about smoking!

The InterContinental NY Times Square is definitely above average...somewhere between good and very good. Here's why:

Location:
If you are traveling as a tourist and want to see NYC sites, like Time Square, the great restaurants, Central Park, famous landmarks, etc. this is an excellent location. It's on 44th and 8th, between Times Square and Hell's Kitchen. So, you have easy walking access to the lights and nightlife along with great restaurants. There are also a couple of subway lines (the A C E blue line is literally steps from the front door) nearby to get around to almost anything in the city.

Hotel:
This is an upscale hotel and it shows. It's classy and well finished in the public spaces, like the lobby. The rooms are nice and the bathrooms are very nice! My only dings against the hotel in this category are that they could refresh some of the wallpaper, carpet and finishes in the hallways on the room floors. Again, while nice finishes were used, there was obvious traffic wear & grime visible even at casual glance.

Staff:
The staff were all excellent. This is a place that seems to pride itself on top service. Well done.

We have had the good fortune to stay at a number of high quality hotels around the world during the past year, and this did not compare well. From the offhand welcome at reception to the bellstaff who seem to spend all day hanging around shooting the breeze with one another, to the loud club music pounding from speakers above the front door, to the TVs with very poor reception on most channels.this hotel does not have the ambiance expected at an Intercontinental. Towards the end of our stay the restaurant closed for the night, leaving the property with no inhouse bar or restaurant - very poor for a supposed quality property. Door staff were usually unable to find us a taxi, and waved us off to stand among the traffic on 8th Avenue to do our best to find our own.

On the upside, the location is good in the heart of the entertainment district, the room was clean and comfortable (although the TVs looked as though they had been installed by a rank amateur) and our maid Adrianna on the 21st floor was friendly and did her best to make sure everything in our room was fine.

Expensive, mediocre and forgettable.
