Wonderful location - extremely close to Times Square. The staff is extremely accommodating, especially Brandon Short (butler). The room decor was quite trendy and the shower was amazing. Only wished the room had been ready earlier than the 4:00 check-in time.

This was a most disappointing experience. That said, I will say that the staff are all very friendly and do their utmost...to an extent. The hotel now has a policy that they put a hold on $200/day to cover incidentals. This tripped my fraud control on my VISA account, which was shut down, and it took an hour to resolve it. I have never been to a hotel where they anticipate you are going to spend money on incidentals and therefore prepare for that. I guess they have gotten burned, but it cost me a lot of time and grief.

The bathtub drain did not work, the shower was quite inferior; among other things there is no shower door so water gets all over the floor. The sink was bizarre, it has a ledge and the water spattered all over (I'm sure it was supposed to look modern and hip, but it did not function well) and there was no counter space.

This is considered a luxury hotel and was expensive. I chose it because my girlfriend (platonic) and I were going to celebrate many years of friendship, and we needed a two-bedded room in the heart of the theater district. The location was fabulous.

But I would never stay there again.

Dear Ms. H.,

Thank you for your review and for starting out on such a kind note. Our staff is out biggest asset and I am proud that they handled your concerns in such professional and caring fashion.

Please know that the policy of authorizing a certain amount of funds on your credit card to allow for charges to your room is absolutely customary in domestic luxury hotels and certainly standard in all full service hotels in New York City. What is unusual is that this authorization (similar to when renting a car), triggered a fraud alert by your bank. We were quick to assist in resolving this matter and even connected your bank representative to you to clarify the technical aspect of this authorization. For the vast majority of our guests this common authorization, which is released upon departure if not used, goes mostly unnoticed.

With that said we are very sorry that this tainted your stay so much.

Thank you also for your feedback about certain design aspects of our bathrooms. Being created by famed architect Thierry Despont – there may have been an occasional deviation from “form follows function”.

We hope there will be an opportunity for us to impress on another visit to New York City. I have emailed you directly and look forward to being able to speak to you personally.

With best regards

AXEL FISCHER

Haven't had such a good feeling about a hotel in a long time. The amount and detail of personal attention was impressive. We felt so well taken care of. We staued in two connected doors with our 3 children and will certainly be back soon. If anybody has doubts about a stay here with small children I can only recommend to reconsider.

Room Tip: Our rooms were excellent, but without view at all. Next time we would require some sort of view.

This lovely boutique Hotel is located just steps away from Times Square, but once you step inside the hustle and bustle soon fades away. The staff is excellent, pleasant and helpful; everyone from the front door to the bar/dining area to the concierge staff and front desk! Everyone truly tries to make you feel special as a guest there. The rooms are beautifully decorated, and the bathrooms are what set it apart from all the rest. Exceptional fixtures and shower make the bathroom a delight. If I had one thing to complain about, it would be the bed - just too firm for my taste, but others may find it comfortable. I wish they had Heavenly Beds! Overall we had a fantastic stay at the Chatwal.

After this experience, we will never stay any place else. We had booked a room with king bed, etc., but upon arrival we were upgraded to a suite with separate sitting room and two bathrooms. What's not to like?

Brandon Short and his staff made my weekend birthday get away in New York the best ! My dearest friend Windy and I shared a double suite with a terrace and the service was excellent! Clean, courteous, in the heart of everything stylish and very luxurious! Great eating recommendations, timely 24 hour service including chocolates, fruit and bubbles! Mirrored restrooms with roomy shower and heated bidet! Love this hotel and highly recommend. Ask for Brandon...he is delightful!

The Pro's

When we arrived on Friday, our room was not ready so they checked our luggage. By 3:30 we had not heard anything so we called and were told our room was ready. When we returned we were greeted by name and they said "we would like to upgrade you to a suite, but we see in our notes that you would like the front of the building and we do not have any available there, would you still be interested in a suite?" Mind? Not at all!!! The queen suite had two rooms and two bathrooms which made our trip even more enjoyable. The rooms are exquisite. If they moved, I would feel like I was on the Orient Express in the most expensive pullman car. A throw back to a more elegant and gracious time and filled with almost every modern technology imaginable. The hotel is particularly proud of the bathrooms and I won't ruin the surprises, but, let's just say dramatic and efficient . You have read about the staff and it is all true. Genuinely interested in your day, your preferences, and in making it the most pleasurable stay. While we did not require the services of the butler, he was always available and it was always a pleasure to speak with him.

The Lamb's club- We ate there on Friday before the theatre and took advantage of the 49$ for a 3 course pre-fixe. Food was very good-excellent and enough variety and choices.

Breakfast- We ate in the bar/mezzanine dining room both mornings as it was included in our package. On both Saturday and Sunday starting at 11 am they had live music. A Bossa Nova band on Saturday and a Jazz band on Sunday. What a treat!! Young and talented musicians played at just the right sound level to enjoy but not to interfere with conversation. We will definitely return.

The bar at night-- The bar mezzanine
We don't usually frequent the hotel bars, but this one was too good to pass up. How dramatic it looked at night! After the theatre when we stopped to have a drink and snacks. (lamb meatballs and fried risotto were perfect ) The only thing that would have been better would have been one of the bands there for listening/dancing.

The Con's- Perhaps the only negative is some of the restaurant service. Should be sharper. In the Lambs club we were shown to our table in a half empty dining room at 6 pm that faced the rest room door. When I asked for another table , the young hostess asked us to wait a moment and would see if she could make a change. She did, she then offered us the table in the corner right next to the door that opened to the restroom. Really??? I finally pointed at several empty tables in the middle of the room and she acquiesced . The young lady who removes the dirty dishes tried to take our food away before we were finished(yes, I do want those last few sips of the champagne I ordered). She did the same thing at breakfast. We had to rescue our plates from her on several occasions. Just ask and we will tell you if we are finished. Yet, even these are small annoyances . The restaurant staff while not always efficient or experienced, was always pleasant.

Will we return to the hotel? Absolutely!

Thank you once again for joining us at The Chatwal and for recounting your experience in such vivid detail. While also being vital to our continued improvement, it is always a treat to hear of our gusts' memorable New York visits. We hope that yours was made even more unforgettable by your accommodations -- it was our pleasure to upgrade you! -- and all the amenities of a Chatwal suite. We strive to transport each guest back to the glamorous golden age of travel, and your description of your room perfectly captures this sentiment. Furthermore, it is wonderful to learn that you enjoyed the prix fixe menu at The Lambs Club, as well as breakfast and the accompanying entertainment. And we are proud to have changed your perception of the hotel bar -- The Lambs Club is a destination in itself! Your comments on the restaurant service will certainly be taken to heart, and we look forward to seeing you again for what is sure to be an even more iconic New York experience.

Sincerely,
Axel Fischer, Hotel Manager
