“Lovely b&b in a great location for exploring NYC.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 23, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was a really great base in the city whilst being away from the noise/craziness of downtown. It takes around 15 minutes on the express route (change at 125 street) to Times Square area so whilst it may feel a long way up Manhattan, in reality it isn't. I have stayed in a few different places on the island before (both downtown and further north) and this was definitely my favourite. We'd recommend Rick to anyone who was coming to NYC and didn't want to spend a fortune in a hotel as this was much better value.

Rick was a great host who made us feel very welcome in his home and was always interested in what we had been doing that day, which was nice. The breakfasts were a fruit platter with pastries and tea/coffee. Our room was on the top floor and very large, with an en suite and tv. It had beautiful decorations/furnishing and a very comfy bed.

We stayed for 6 nights with our 19 year old son and 14 year old daughter on all but our son's first visit to New York. Patrick greeted us warmly on our arrival and told us how friendly and welcoming we would find the neighbourhood to be. He was right; people offered their help spontaneously, stopped us in the street to pass the time of day and made us feel very safe and welcome in Harlem. Rick returned the next day and took over with more helpful advice and information, such as where to buy our daughter's 15th birthday cake, how to walk to the Yankees stadium in the Bronx and the best local restaurants. Whether you've visited NYC before or it's your first time, I would say don't make too many plans before you arrive and certainly don't buy attraction vouchers online, chances are you won't get to use them, just listen to Rick's advice over breakfast and you won't go far wrong. He's a mine of useful information. His philosophy seemed to be 'improving the world one breakfast at a time'. It's a fact it's the people you meet that make the holiday and the people we met in Harlem and in downtown NYC were unforgettable with Rick and Patrick at the top of the list.

Room Tip: We had 2 rooms for the four of us and they were both excellent.

We booked 4 nights and were amazed by how quiet and comfy the Harlem Renaissance House B&B was. We expected a lot of noise in New York but there was nothing to complain about and we were able to sleep well without hearing anything from outside or inside. Room and bath were clean and breakfast was very good as well. As already mentioned in other reviews it consisted of fresh fruit and a cinnamon-flavoured pastry. And last but not least Rick was a caring host with whom we felt very well.

We stayed at harlem renaissance for 3 nights. Rick & Patrick were good hosts and very engaging with their knowledge on what to do etc - so we did laugh a lot. We appreciated the little touches such as the small bottle of johnson and johnson baby shampoo (since we had a 4 year old) , asking us in advance what kind of breakfast my son liked:) However, I would say one shouldn't travel here when its warm as the room was really really warm and we struggled to sleep!

Rick was a very pleasant host. Very helpful with information on local and city points of interest. Rooms were very clean. The only thing lacking was a protein choice at breakfast, and our room was quite warm.

We seek out B and B's for their uniqueness. Rick provides that. His guests were interesting and engaging (so is Rick), a big plus for us. He helped us navigate the City. He is quirky (no shoes in the house, cash only) but hey, that's what makes the experience interesting. If you need something, just ask. The house itself is very nice. Rooms are on third and fourth floor, so you get a little exercise. Enjoy!

We have been guests of Rick's B&B for 7 nights and have been truly a great experience.
The house is lovely and well-kept, the forniture is traditional but with an modern-art touch that fit completely with the architecture of the area, by the way the neighbourhood is very quiet and safe. The room was huge, clean, and well furnished, with a big private bathroom. But what made our holiday so special was the owner, Rick. He treated us as his best friend, like we knew each other since ages. He prepared every morning for us the breakfast, according our day's plan, and he always spent some of his time to have a chat with the guests, suggesting them place to visit or where to go to eat. Finally, he also offered himself to find for us a private cab to bring to the JFK.
Overall the judgement is GREAT. We definitely raccommend his place becasue it completely worths the price.
