After some research, we chose the Distrikt as a home-base for our latest NYC excursion. The location was great and many of the negatives we had read on Tripadvisor had, to us, been overstated. We never had a problem grabbing a cab outside the hotel, the "strip club" was the typical Manhattan adult novelty store, and all of the folks at the parole center were obviously on their very best behavior. No issues with the neighborhood and a short walk to most of Times Square and Hell's Kitchen.
The hotel and rooms were seemingly new and very clean. The bell staff, maids, and even a maintenance tech were all very pleasant, helpful, and exuded a feeling that they cared about us having a good stay. However, our interactions with the Desk Staff were not as positive.
We interacted with several different people behind the desk and found a consistent theme across most. Simply, they wanted to get the transaction done and go back to talking amongst themselves. With no obvious concierge available, we ask at different times about local recco's for breakfast, opinions on close-by restaurants, and even if cabs were typically available very early in the morning. The standard answer can be best summed as "I don't know" followed by silence. Checking in and out was perfunctory which is fine, but the experience still stood in contrast to the warmth of everyone else we interacted with during our stay. In general we felt as if we were interrupting them from some far more important task.
