I thoroughly researched hotels before booking this one in NYC. I booked this for the below reasons:
-close toTimes Square
-refrigerator/mini-kitchen in room
-reviews were good
I will say the reviews are accurate. I'm picky when it comes to hotels, but my taste exceeds my budget, but I was fine staying here.
Location: a block or two from Times Square. If you don't mind stepping out into the main hub of people in the city and love TS, this is excellent. I was a little afraid at night to walk to the hotel room, but I felt this way on most streets in NYC at night. It's across from the Port Authority and next to a parole office, but those characters were never a bother. Any street in NYC can be dangerous. There is a Duane Reade (pharmacy/convenience type store) on the corner.
Rooms: Small, but not that small. There were two of us and we were comfortable and since we didn't spend any time in the room, but to sleep, it suited us fine. They keep real feather down pillows in the room if you prefer those. Everything was clean and that is my biggest thing I cannot due without. Beds were comfortable. Never used the mini-kitchen except the refrigerator. We get thirsty in the middle of the night and having a cool drink was great. If you request your room to be serviced, they will turn the air off. It doesn't get that hot, but I'd like to return to a cool room after a hot day.
Breakfast: Meh. Eggs every day. I'm not big on turkey sausage and turkey this and that, but I just didn't eat it. That's probably the only downside to breakfast. The reviews talk about seating, but I never had an issue (even with softball teams staying in the hotel at the same time). They have bagels, coffee, juice, excellent melon, cereal and a few other things. I walked out full every morning.
Elevators: I read the reviews and was prepared. I told the front desk and asked for a lower level room. They gave it to me. I didn't have problems with the elevators, but I skipped them and used the stairs I waited more than a min. I used the stairs less than half the time I was there. I didn't care about getting a room with a view. There are so many views in NYC, it didn't matter.
Staff: never really needed their help. There is NO room service. After a long day, I did want to use room service, but had to go back out for food. When we left the front desk guy was kind of rude after we declined the hotel car ($50 to Laguardia) and told us it could be long to hail a cab. The Port Authority (across the street) has a taxi stand so paying $35 seemed more reasonable, but we gave in and took the hotel car to the airport. Everyone else was friendly (hotel guy did perk up when we said we would take the hotel car).
I would recommend this hotel. I probably won't stay again because I do prefer to be closer to somewhere else besides Times Square. Times Square just has too many people. It's not a knock on the hotel.
Excellent if you are looking for a good value next to Times Square.
