“Average Hotel - Small Rooms”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed October 24, 2013

Had to stay here on a last minute trip to NY and wanted to stay at a starwood property this was the only choice. Hopefully this won't happen again as I didn't find the hotel very nice. It's not in a great location, lots of questionable characters hanging out near the entrance. Room was very small, bathroom could have been cleaner. Not much room to use a chair in the workspace part of the room as there was very little space between the bed and work area. It took a very long time getting an elevator, hallways were very cramped. My view on the 21st floor was looking into apartments across the street. The only reason I would stay here again is due to starwood association.

We are sorry to hear that your experience with us was not as you expected. I can tell you our block is one of the safest in the area. As for the views almost all of our rooms from the 17th floor up have great views of North and South.

We look forward to possibly having you back in the future to show you how great we can be.

Located on the cusp of Midtown West and Hell's Kitchen on 40th Street between 8th & 9th Ave.
This isn't the hotel to stay at if you want a cool bar with a great vibe, excellent restaurant and upscale décor. It is a nice hotel with friendly staff, comfy beds and a great location where you can visit the places with great vibes, excellent food and upscale décor. I would definitely stay here again. Excellent value.
Pros:
- Super-friendly staff. Very welcoming at check-in, offered free bottle of water, greeted warmly every time I entered or left. There is a smallish restaurant at the back of the lobby behind the elevators where I was plied with free wine (the red was actually quite drinkable) & mini burgers on a weds afternoon, along with very hospitable hosts.
- Close to many attractions: Times Square, Chrysler Building, the Garment district, Macy's, Bryant Park, etc.
- Close to major transportation: the Port Authority, subway, etc. To save some $$ from the airport take the airport express bus. Drops off on 42nd Street so a two block walk to the hotel, picks up on 41st. Round trip is U$28 (vs. cab fare of U$75 one way from Newark. Lesson learned.)
- Close to great restaurants and cafes. For excellent grab & go: Dean & Deluca's is a half-block away, two others on the south side of 40th between 8th & 7th: Piccolo, Guy & Gaillard.
- Room 2203 was clean and comfy, with transitional modern décor that is broadly appealing. Above average with an acceptable level of wear. No tub, which I didn't mind. Built in desk for working with free wifi, in-room coffee/tea & free water. A good amount of space for one (or even two) in the room itself. Bathroom would be small for two.
- Good hairdryers at SPGs mean I can leave mine at home. Liked the dispensers in the shower to avoid the waste of those tiny bottles of shower gel.
Cons:
- There are some interesting neighbours to this property that give it a quasi-sketchy feeling, some of that is the Midtown tourist weirdo part (i.e. the XXX shop), part of it is life in the Big City and part of it is actually sketchy. As a woman I felt safe solo but some who aren't used to big city travel might feel intimidated.
- It might be a coincidence but this hotel and the Westin Jersey City I stayed at two weeks ago both smelled (stale at best or of body odour at worst) upon entering the room. Once the air comes on it diminishes but there was definitely a funky smell at first.
- Bathroom is smallish, not much space for toiletries (but also not a major concern for one person).
- Air conditioner is wall-mounted and can be loud coming on and off.
- NYC is a city that doesn't sleep so there is street noise

"+"
Strategic position, 10 minutes from Times Square and 15 from the ESB.
One of the main subway's line is just around the corner.
Large variety of caffée and restaurant very close.
Friendly and efficient staff.
Extra comfortable beds!!!

"-"
Very very small room. Booked a room for 4 people (2 queen beds) altough we were just
2 persons and uet the place was real small! Bathroom was quite new, but also very small.
Hotel's restaurant is freezing, food barely sufficient and way to expensive. Service was slow although there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant...
Elevators were terribly slow.

Thank you for completing your most recent review of our hotel. We are sorry that you felt the hotel was average and that the restaurant was cold. We will look into the items you mentioned and make it better for future stays.

As for the room size, unfortunately these rooms are fairly large for NYC standards.

We hope in the future that you can give us another chance in the future.

Regards,
Joseph

I flew in from Dallas, Texas and literally booked this hotel in the cab ride on the way from JFK.
I got a great deal! Everything I asked for, I got! I got a room on a high floor (26th I think), and a room off to the side. It was very quiet and no one bothered me at all. The King Bed was super comfy, and there was a Duane Reade, as well as food places/ other businesses nearby!

My husband and I spend a week at this hotel. The experience was really great, beginning with the staff who has an excellent service attitude, always traying to solve problems beyond their responsability. The room was clean, and confortable, equiped with coffee and tea to passengers convenience. The hotel showers attention on customers. Depending on the day, they offer pop corn, pretzels and even a barbaque (beverages included) on Wednesday. It's located very close to subway and theatre district. Highly recomended. If I have to choose what's the best thing this hotel has to offer, without any doubt his people!! One of the bellboys, Issahia, very kindly solve fast and accurately a problem we had with a tranfer, with little time to resolve.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quiet

This hotel is in a great spot if you just want to see New York for a couple of days, but it's especially convenient for NYCC. It's just .3 miles (10min walk) from the Javits convention center. As a bonus, roughly 1 minute away on the corner of 40th and 9th there is a Pizza place that stays open late.

I couldn't check in early which was disappointing. I asked to be called when a room becomes available but no one did. Otherwise the staff was really great and helpful.

The neighborhood is fine. If you're used to living in the city you won't mind. If you're from the country or suburbs you might find it a bit skittish. There is always plenty of people around though.

Dear Magdalena,

We are happy that our location worked out for you and we are even more happy that your stay was an enjoyable one. We try our best to accomodate early check-ins, but it can be difficult sometimes due to the volume of rooms in house at our hotel.

We do look forward to seeing you back in the future.

Regards,
Joseph

My wife and I just spent the weekend at the Four Points Midtown-Times Square and had a very enjoyable stay. The hotel itself and the service were excellent so don't let the neighborhood put you off. The hotel is located across the street from the Port Authority Bus Station and the on the walk west from 8th Ave. you pass a XXX bookstore and peep show place. Not the nicest of views but we always felt perfectly safe, even late at night. The hotel is less than a block away from the subway and easy walking distance to Times Square and the theatre district.

The lobby is small but very nice and appears to be recently decorated. Our room, on the 20th floor, was very spacious and well appointed with king sized bed and a remodeled bathroom. Our only complaint about the room is the wall heat/AC unit. They tend to be rather loud when it's running (and this one was no exception) so we tried to keep it turned off at night, not something you'd be able to do in summer.

As an SPG Platinum member, we took the free breakfast option. There is a small restaurant at the back of the lobby, behind the elevators, which included a very nice buffett each morning including scrambled eggs, bacon or sausage (depending on the day) and pancakes or french toast (again, depending on the morning). Starbucks coffee is always nice for breakfast.

The staff was very helpful with directions and providing maps. We would definitely recommend the hotel and look forward to staying there again.
