“Modern Portuguese - Excellent”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

The food was splendid, the prices a bit high but expected, the show was fun, and the service was stellar. I agree to a degree with some of the lower rating reviews but seriously, the ambiance and staff made up for the food imperfections.

Foie gras terrine - some of the best I've had.
Soft boiled egg in shiitake broth - slightly oversalted but incredible texture.
Venison with cabbage - just a tad on the dry side but the cabbage was great.
Salted pork - probably one of the best dishes I've ever had.
Chocolate tart with saffron foam - excellent
Sorbets - the salted chocolate and passion fruit sorbets were superb (the raspberry not so much)

“Mixed bag”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2013

Smallish restaurant with even smaller portions
Pluses:
Fresh quality food sometimes quite successful in innovating
My appetizer of bacalau chickpeas and orange was quite pleasing.
Desserts are a bit of a let down.
Minuses:
Service brisk to brusk taking glasses and dishes before you can finish, definitely detracting from the meal.
Nondescript rather cramped athmosphere and setting
Size of portions on the stingy side while prices are high

“Very disappointing........”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 14, 2013

I don't typically provide reviews, but this I found compelled and necessary- I am Portuguese, born and raised and I know Portuguese food....I had been looking forward to dining here and introducing my boyfriend to Portuguese food- I found service to be super cordial and attentive, however, I was completely disapointed with the menu selection, no "caldo verde" anywhere and bacalhau a "braza" is NOTHING like what you would find in a typical "Aldea".... I also found the portions and prices very disapointing. Portuguese New-Yorkers: PLS take note and bring back a good authentic Portuguese Restaurant to the City that will make (Aldea) proud!

“Just OK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2013

For the price that you will pay the rewards were just OK. Food is well prepared and fresh, but the portion sizes are small. And, while there is an attempt to be creative with the cooking, it lacks that expert touch where one would say 'this is unique'. Again, just OK. The service however was top notch. Likely would not go back.

“THE BEST”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

This was the best dining experience of my life. We chose the tasting menu with the wine pairings, best idea ever! The service was stellar and the food was pure palate art, exquisite! Chef/Owner George Mendes was a delight, I highly recommend this wonderful place.
