Owner description: Park located in the East Village that was the scene of a big uprising in 1991 when a decision was made to evict the park's homeless in order to renovate; today, the park is pretty and quiet, but is still home to many who have no where else to go.

“The center of the old bad East Village, now sanitized”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2013

Tompkins Square Park is a shadow of what it once was, but for anyone who happens there now without having any idea of what came to a head back in the late 80s/early 90s, it is another lovely neighborhood park with spots of green to sit and eat a picnicky lunch on the grass.

There have been events there from time to time, like Wigstock - not sure what might be coming up there this summer, but a great place to hang in any case.

“The Heart of the East Village”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

If you really want to see New Yorkers instead of tourists, this is the place to people-watch. When we were there, it seemed we were the only ones with cameras and that tourist look to them. This park has an enclosed dog-run so there are a lot of animals there. The park is a little run-down, especially the public washrooms (use only if desperate), but the area is fascinating with all of the diversity it displays. Around the park are all sorts of quirky little shops, vegetarian restaurants, cafes and regular restaurants and all the other things that a vibrant neighbourhood requires. Great if you want to go off the beaten track.

Delighful collection of small shops, bars and eateries. A pleasing stroll around the area was followed by a few glasses of a local brew.

“A relaxing park, but not the cleanest”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2012

This is a small park in the heart of the East Village that I walk through a couple of times a week. I have seen the park through the seasons, and it is particularly nice in the summer, when many families are out and events are put on. However, this is not a place where I would choose to walk alone at night, and the patrons to this park can be less than family-friendly. Overall, I like it, but I would prefer to go to Central Park for general relaxation and fun.

“Relaxing neighborhood park with events”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 13, 2011

After a long absence we visited Tompkins Square park for the street art show this past week and were shocked to see the vast and wonderful improvements. The space is safe, comfortable, lovely, and convenient and there are great plantings to provide peaceful vistas. The art show along the perimeter was exciting with varied and fascinating work being done in progress.
