The Metropolitan Opera is a must see for visitors to New York City. It's great entertainment in a great setting, and a real NYC experience. Generally, it also costs less than a Broadway Musical. Weeknights you can wait on line for $20 rush tickets in the ORCHESTRA. If it's a VERY popular show, you'll likely need to get there by 2:00 for tickets that go on sale at 5:30, but it'll be worth it! Weekends there are raffles for rush tickets online. There are also inexpensive tickets you can buy in the $25-40 range way up in the Family Circle section. These have great sound and a full view but you'll be very high up and far from the stage. (Bring binoculars or RENT opera glasses for $5) but you might need to get these cheap seats well in advance so check the Metropolitan website and plan ahead. Not everybody dresses up, but lots of people still do especially on "gala" opening nights. Check out the Metropolitan Opera website for schedules and details. There's a very good seating chart that will give you an idea of where everything is and it will explain how to get tickets.
