“Absolutely brilliant stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed yesterday NEW via mobile

We arrived at the hotel, the staff were very friendly the service was excellent and the receptionist was very helpful and upgraded is to a higher room, the room was gorgeous with a view to die for! I fell asleep as soon as I got in bed as they were so comfy. A lot of people complain about there being no restaurant but there is a really nice classy bar for night and a cafe for the morning and not to mention your in New York so there's lots of restaurants wherever you look. Brilliant week in this hotel, I would recommend to anyone

As other reviews note, this is a disappointing property. Full disclosure: stayed here on a Hotwire deal; it was advertised as a 5-star property. (Hotwire should be ashamed.) Even with their discount, one night's stay was just shy of $400.

The Good: terrific location for midtown, Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall. Beautiful lobby, courtyard, decorations. (Note that main entrance is on E 50th, not Madison Ave.) Better than average fitness center.

The Bad: everything else. Slow check-in. Bellmen were consistently unhelpful, not once offering help or even opening a door. Threadbare carpets in the three elevators (out of six) that were in operation. Often long waits for the elevator. Room had a host of problems: no toilet paper (which wasn't delivered even after a phone request), wall plates coming off the wall, leaky/noisy toilet, lousy water pressure, room safe inoperable, no in-room coffee maker. Inexplicably, there are few channel choices. Express checkout didn't work. There is a $16/day charge for internet (we elected to skip it)...a ridiculous thing these days.

I stay in dozens of hotels each year. This is one of the biggest disappointments in a long time. At the price point - inexcusable. There are many other great choices in NYC.

Third stay in the last five years & definitely the last. Room service slow, limited & exorbitant, paper walls, small bar with arrogant staff, internet from the 70's (when it also didn't exist), & a consierge who adopted a 'do it yourself' attitude when he couldn't sell you anything. There has obviously been a change of policy since the make over.
Many better hotel options if you want to be looked after but if you want a top motel experience this may be ok.

I have been staying here for about 15 years. Always felt that it was by far the best kept secret in midtown NY hotels, especially with its great attention to detail. However, we're coming to the end of a five day stay now (having not been here for a couple of years) - and the place has sadly gone down hill.

Wait ages for basic room service dining, and house keeping. Internet is terrible, despite asking them to try and improve it, many times. Also, no real restaurant services here for breakfast - poor, when the cheapest in room breakfast costs $50 - and even this is not very bountiful.

Room Tip: Make sure you're at least away from the lifts (they are still noisy).

We love the New York Palace. We stay in many New York City hotels but this is our favorite. We were here just before Christmas and the hotel looked beautiful. The decorations are beautiful. The hotel is behind St. Patrick's cathedral in the heart of mid-town Manhattan. You can't beat the location. It is in the middle of things. Yet when you walk in the door of the palace it looks like a palace and it is relaxing. You are in a different world - this is not a cookie cutter hotel! You leave the hustle and bustle and the craziness of the city at the door. This place is so relaxing, especially with the quality renovation work recently completed. You feel like your batteries are being recharged when you enter the door. This is the best staff of any hotel in New York. The staff treats you with respect. Everyone is positive and polite. The staff appreciates you being here and they treat you like a guest in their house. Quite honestly, service in New York City is often not good. At the Palace it is consistently excellent. The hotel has a very European flavor to it. It blends the old and the new very well. The rooms are well done and pleasant. Request a view of the Cathedral - one of the best views in the city. My only regret is that the dining room, located in the beautiful mansion part of the hotel, is only open now for private functions. The craftsmanship in this area is beautiful - you see shades of it in another bar in the hotel. By the way the Pomme Palais coffee shop is OUTSTANDING. Best coffee shop by far in New York. It is a gem. Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere, great service. Best place in New York for a mid day break, too. We go to New York at least 4 times a year. We tried many hotels. This is the only place where we stay now. It is our New York City home.

Room Tip: Request a room with a view of St. Patrick's Cathedral. This massive Gothic cathedral is a gem.

Wonderful location, great property, a true NYC experience. Everyone is friendly, and such wonderful places to dine and shop nearby. Can get great deals in the fall for this hotel. Sadly I missed one and ended up at the W hotel, and was so sorely disappointed. If you can stay here then don't hesistate!

Ideal location if you are going for business and you're looking for a nice place to stay in midtown.
Room was nice and spacious, comfortable bed which is more than appreciated after a long journey. For some reason the restaurant serving breakfast was closed, so I had to go to the restaurant next door to have breakfast (Maloney Porcelli which is renowned in NYC in particular for its dinner menu including the infamous angry lobster). Given the standard of the hotel, I was a bit disappointed to having to walk outside the hotel to get my breakfast.
Other than that ok stay, check-in was efficient, while the check-out was a bit slow but staff apologised and offered to discount the internet from the bill.
That being said in 2014 I still wonder how hotels in particular high standing hotel still charge for internet.
