“Great find, but not for everybody”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2012

I cannot tell you how much we loved the EVBC. The reservation process and response was timely and accurate. Their website gives you everything you need to know. We took the subway in from La Guardia and caught a cab ($5) from the subway station to the EVBC. Let me tell you the rooms are small. We stayed in the plane room the 1st night and moved to the zen room for our subsequent nights. The Zen Room was a bit roomier and much more, well, zen. The living area and shared bath were all clean, albeit a bit outdated. Many amenities are available including a hair dryer, computer, printer, maps, and travel books. Although the place was fully booked our entire stay we didn't really see too many people around. We never had an issue getting into a bathroom and the other guests seemed to be mindful of others need to use the shower etc. If you are a bike rider I would take advantage of their free bikes. It saves the feet for a day and we were able to bike across the Brooklyn Bridge. This saved us $100 on bike rentals. They also have MOMA passes to check out, so we didn't have to brave the crowds on the free night. The staff - Maya - was lovely and very helpful, she even helped my husband get a bottle of champagne for the room prior to our arrival. I have seen some negative reviews regarding the owner Anne. We didn't interact with her at all, although my husband had a 5 second run-in and he thought she was a little less than friendly but it didn't affect our stay or our opinion. If you are used to hotel stays and want lots of frills and pampering, this is not the place for you. If you are adventurous, want to feel like a real New Yorker living in a neighborhood, and save a little money this place is wonderful. We would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Room Tip: The plane room is REALLY small. I would recommend trying to get another room if possible. I would...

I agree Maya is great. She is new to the business and a quick learner. I’ve been training her to take over while I currently run a non-profit to save B&B’s in NYC. (Your stay fell on a crazy week of meetings and media for that effort.)

I want to wish you a belated happy birthday! You’re husband was lovely in arranging this for you.

We hope to see you again and I hope to be around much, more in the near future. Anne

We couldn't recommend this place more. After arriving excitedly in New York Harrison met us at the 'red door' and showed us around. This place is a gem to find, its like home away from home. He then proceeded to spend an hour with us and gave awesome recommendations of where to eat and what to see on our first night in NYC - we didn't get home till 4am! Clean, tidy, affordable and friendly. Thank you for your hospitatliy.

New York can be an overwhelming experience, especially for two people from a small town in South Africa, but at EVBC you can get advise from the manager, as well as the fellow travellers you meet around the breakfast table. There are good restaurants in walking distance and the bus on the next block, takes you directly to the subway, that takes you to where ever your heart desires. And on those evenings that you cannot walk any further, you can lie on the couch in front of the TV and pet Mango the dog.

Room Tip: First floor only has central AC, so if you are hot or cold, choose a room with own AC unit.

After a 24 hours of travel from Melbourne arriving at EVBC was fantastic. We were met by Anne who made us very welcome, sharing lots of information about New York and East Village in particular. Our room was spotless and the bed very comfortable (the best so far in our 5weeks of travel) if you don't like sharing a bathroom and kitchen this place may not be for you but the bathroom was spotless and it was great to be able to make breakfast before heading off to tackle the New York sights! We are already planning our next trip to New York and we will definitely stay here again.....great value, spotless and comfortable!

Room Tip: Can be a bit noisy if you have the front rooms but complimentary ear plugs are provided which we use...

Evbc is perfect for those who do not want to use a fortune on a hotelroom. No trouble sharing kitchen and bath- on the contrary- you meet nice people at the breakfasttable! The beds are comfortable and the hosts friendly! Recommend the place and the area.

If you want to be in the lap of luxury, or if you need a ton of privacy, then EVB&C is probably not for you. But if you want safe, affordable, sparkling clean accommodations in a great NYC neighborhood, read on. Bedrooms are small but comfortable with shared kitchen, living room and bathroom on each floor. You are likely to meet some of the other guests (many of whom are European). The owner (Anne) and her staff are courteous and helpful. You will find great restaurants, shopping and night life within walking distance. It is one of our favorite places to stay anywhere!

Room Tip: EVB&C is small and very popular - plan your trip in advance!

This was our first time in new york and can honeslty say the bed and coffee was superb, very comfortable with a warm and friendly atmosphere, everywhere was clean and the room we stayed in was lovely, the kitchen has everything you could ever need and the toilets/shower were cleaned daily, Anne and Harrison are briiliant and cant do enough to make you feel welcome, Billy the cleaner/artist was hard working and great to chat with, oh and Mango is the coolest dog...
the area is very good as a base and east village is full of cute restaurants and bars, its about a mile to astor place which is the nearest subway, from there you can go anywhere in NYC.
there is a bit of street noise but this is no way the EVBC's fault it is just new york, we were so tired after busy days we didnt even notice it.
would we go back....100% yes
