This both IS and ISN'T a destination hotel. If your destination is the hotel -- then this isn't for you. No swimming pools, no spas, no valet parking, no bell hops, not even adequate lobby space to lounge around in waiting for friends or family. If, however, your destination is Manhattan and Midtown in particular, I don't think you could do better than this hotel in its price range. Everything is within a short walk or subway ride. I spent five nights here with my teenage son and was generally happy with my stay. Here are some things to consider -- yes, as the other reviews note, the one old elevator is terribly slow and small. If this is a concern get a lower floor. We knew that we would be using the elevator exactly twice a day -- once to leave in the morning and once to return at night. So we preferred a quiet room on the 10th floor -- and quiet it was! You couldn't even tell you were in New York City at night it was so quiet. Now, mind you, we went in the summer when the AC was on all the time (AC window unit functioning perfectly well by the way). I don't know the noise levels when the AC is off. Anyone who has stayed in Manhattan with its endless police and fire sirens, midnight garbage trucks etc. will know what a privilege it is to have a quiet room -- especially if you are a poor sleeper. The room itself was small (surprise, surprise!) and the one thing that I wasn't prepared for is that it had absolutely no clothing storage space whatsoever, so we had to live out of our suitcases. Which worked out fine in the end. Nice perk to have a mini-fridge. No complaints about any of the other amenities. The free WIFI worked fine and everything was kept clean. The continental breakfast we passed on, mostly because it was crowded. On the last day before checkout, I did venture in to get some coffee and a croissant. For families on a tight budget and for those who aren't picky about their food, it was perfectly fine. Just don't expect croissants from the neighborhood bakery -- most likely they are from Walmart or some other large box store.
All in all a very decent experience for the price range (by New York standards of course).
