“Great place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 11, 2013

I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Despite it being very old, and the room being kind of small, it was a charming place to stay at. The staff were very friendly, and the location of the hotel was just perfect. The place was a bit dirty, but you get what you pay for!

My date(s) of stay were much earlier than June of 2007. I actually stayed there in 1999, and again in 2000. In those days, hanging on the wall in the lobby, were a series of b&w
photos...circa 1912. The photos featured primarily, seaman. They had just arrived in Manhattan. They were some of the survivors of the Titanic tragedy. Atop the building, in that era, was a searchlight. The same searchlight that is mentioned in the accounts of the survivors, as they sailed into the city. Many of those seaman stayed at the hotel, At
the time...it was exclusively maritime housing, I believe. Lying in bed, in that little room, as, uninviting as it was...I felt a special kinship with those survivors. If it served their purpose...it served mine, as well. The last time I was there, the photographs had been
removed. The searchlight was dismantled a long time ago.

Do not stay here. Unless@
- you like drug-addicted prostitutes and drug dealers on your doorstep
- the worst sized and poorest quality rooms you will ever experience
- the fear of death being overwhelming

I could go on but what's the point? read some of the reviews here and you will know I'm right...

a proper grimey hotel. very cheap and you get what you pay for in NYC. great location and a fab area of new york. bring your own pillow or buy one for a couple of bucks and there are some great food places locally. not recomended for couples or the single woman as it is a bit rough in that part of town, druggies and hookers but all very entertaining and my room looked out to the statue of liberty and the road in front of the hotel which is guaranteed entertainment... not for the faint hearted or niave. keep your wits about you but enjoy it...

I spent a week at Hotel Riverview and it was everything I expected. Rooms were tiny but cheap. Location is amazing. The hotel still has a hint of old-time New York that welcomes the ones who don't belong to any other city. Amazing mixture of personalities from all walks of life.

By a conservative estimate, I've probably stayed at The Riverview at least 100 days over the past 11 years. I've stayed there during the summer, I've stayed there during the winter. I've stayed on every floor but the 2nd ( which is where the best showers and toilets are located, by the way). I do not hail from a third world country, where a fist-sized ice cube in your drink is considered a luxury. If one can get past the human flotsam that haunt the halls and the occasional pesky bedbug, it is the perfect place to stay in lower Manhattan. All you need to do is this: 1) Ask for a room facing the street ( or river, if you are feeling idyllic ) when you check in; this will dissuade junkies and their ilk from climbing through your window; 2) Pack an extra YMCA-class towel with you; also, what I do is to go to thrift stores before the trip and buy cheap t-shirts that you wear and toss - use these to stand on once you hike back to your room from the shower, and leave them when you check out - the Trinidadian housekeeper will gladly take them for you; 3) Bring shower shoes and swim trunks; it is not advisable to publicly sashay around this place in a threadbare towel; 4) Go to 14th street and make a right turn; between 7th and 6th Aves. on 14th are places where you can buy a cheap oscillating fan for around 11 dollars - this is a lifesaver at night during August - leave the fan when you check out as well; 5) If other guests/tenants become too rambunctious at night, simply turn your TV on - better ask for one when you check in, too - to a stationless channel and crank up the white noise. Put one of your shirts over the screen to cut down on the glare. Works just as well as earplugs; 6) Bring a mess of alcohol prep towelettes to disinfect your hands after you touch doorknobs, phones, etc. - there can be lots of hepatitis - or worse-microbes that would be more than willing to get acquainted with your vital organs; and 7) spend the all the money you'll save on lodging and treat yourself to whatever fancies you. You deserve it....

  • Liked — Extremely affordable and located close to public transportatin
  • Disliked — I have not been able to secure reservations via internet for the past couple of years...

I never stayed at the Hotel Riverview but live in the neighborhood. Believe all the negative reviews. This place is downright scary. There are drug addicts and transgender prostitutes that frequent here. I always feel sorry for the unknowing tourists I see arriving outside this hotel. STAY AWAY!
