“Heart of New York”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2014 via mobile

On arriving late at night we were disapointed in our room it was really small-we had booked a queen room with a view-Hotel was clean but dated but ok.when we woke up in the morning opened the curtains and found the views obstructed by scaffolds we were disapointed especially as we were there for five nights .when I mentioned it the next day tthe nice receptioist fixed it up by moving us into a much bigger room with no scaffolding great service

Excellent location, right next to the Penn Station; if lucky, one can get a very good view on a higher floor (20th floor and above), facing the empire state building and enjoying the colourful lighting at night.

Room is a bit small. Bed and wifi are good. A nuisance is the shower -- the shower head doesn't distribute water very well...

Pro - Decent size rooms for NYC
- Excellent gym (multiple treadmills, weight machines, pull-up bar, dip bars, ample mats)
- No-nonsense service .. it doesn't pretend to be a 5-star but if you have a problem it is fixed very quickly (i.e. room not cleaned by accident, needed kitchen utensils for street food).
- Inexpensive and good quality diner on site
- Close access to A,C,E lines (right at the entrance), 1,2,3 lines (one block away) and Penn station (next door)
- 24-hour Duane Reade pharmacy/basic groceries/toiletries next door
- Easy to get a cab, and pretty much every cabbie in the city knows where the New Yorker is
- Neat Art Deco feel to the place. Part of me wanted to steal the door keys as a souvenir
- maybe 14 elevators, so waiting for one is never an issue
- Rooms have A/C
- Close to the Hudson river greenway trail, easy biking and running
- Many of the floors are used as student residences, which can add a youthful feel to the place. Judging by the number of pony-tailed grad student types with full laundry hampers, there must be laundry facilities nearby
- free no-nonsense wifi

Cons
- Very busy hotel, with 900 rooms and continuous foot traffic in the lobby, hard to get noticed by service employees on occasion
- Room decor and finishes not quite up to 3 or 4 star standard, some areas look worn, but to be expected in a building of this age
- no fridge in the rooms
- Street noise can be an issue on lower floors. We were on the 19th and the sounds of sirens can waft through

I definitely would stay again.

Older but very characteristic typical New-Yorker hotel, liked the atmosphere of the hotel, including the furnishings.
We booked a double-double room with Empire view and paid approx. 300$ extra for this.
Our voucher mentioned this upgrade correctly.
After a journey of 19 hours we were not happy to start an argument regarding the room that was available for us. No Empire view...the hotel receptionist was trying hard to convince us that this was only a request...no way José, a voucher is a, (paid for), ticket NOT A REQUEST.
After 30 minutes of discussion his manager came and told us that there was another room with Empire view available on the 36th floor, finally !
Room was spacious, remarkably clean, with two queen beds and a nice view.
Safe deposit box in wardrobe, no laptop size but still convenient.
Bathroom , small sized, little bit dated but did the job perfectly and...was clean.
Rest of our stay was very good. Normally very quiet at night except for one night when a bunch of youngsters in the adjacent room started there party...until 3:30 am, rather selfish in our opinion.
A lot of staff members in this hotel, all were very courteous. Felt also very save here !
Room cleaning was perfect during our stay.
Had breakfast every day at the Tick-Tok diner...OK to start your day but small section of items.
This diner was even better for dinner, they served me a very nice steak one evening !
Location, already many times mentioned is indeed very good !
No worries to book this hotel, can recommend but...beware with your booking to receive the correct room !

Room Tip: double-double rooms are more spacious compared with the pictures of a standard room. Higher floor m...

I have stayed here multiple times while attending conferences. It is a short, pleasant walk to the Javits Center, MSG, Penn Station, Macys, and Port Authority. Also walking distance to Times Sq. With the convenience though, comes a very busy street scene. The rooms and hallways are a good size for Manhattan. There are enough elevators so you don't have a long wait. Rooms have been upgraded and modernized, while still retaining the charm of a historic hotel. Hopefully, the Wyndham group will keep The New Yorker identity. The Tick Tock restaurant adjoining the hotel makes it easy to grab a good diner type breakfast or lunch.

Room Tip: Try to get a view of the Empire State building after the scaffolding comes down. Higher floors will...
