“Great service from Suzad and Mohamed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 16, 2013

Arrived at the New Yorker after a long day of travelleing - received great service from Suzad and was delighted to see Mohamed on good form again. Rooms spotlessly clean. the hotel's Tick Tock Diner provides good value plentiful food.

Our room was a bit of a cupboard and the staff were mostly unfriendly and abrupt. However, the price was reasonable for the middle of Manhattan so I wasn't expecting much. Very close to the subway but a nice walk to Central Park or Wall Street if you fancy it.

Dear Valued Guest,

We apologize that your stay at The New Yorker Hotel did not meet your expectations. On behalf of our team we do apologize for the lack of service you experienced at our hotel. The level of service you experienced is far from what we strive to maintain here and for that we are sorry. We would love a chance to make things right with you upon your return. We hope to see you back.

First off, let me say. This hotel was fine, great location. We had no issues... until

We started noticing our money disappearing, so much so that we had to cancel our holiday, leave goods back that we bought in order to get money, and go home early. Absolute nightmare

When we arrived we were pre authorised for the 5 day stay, €1142

This came out of our "available funds" on our current account"

We used a VISA/DEBIT card

Fast forward 6 days, each day, a daily amount was pre authorised and deducted from our available balance, by the end of the week this amounted to the original price for the stay - $1142

Now we are having a total of €2284

We had no idea this was happening but found it strange that our bank account had missing money

So on the day we checked out we were then charge $1142 for the stay, which again came out of the available balance on our current account

So now we are missing $3426 from the account, take away the price for the stay €1142 leaving us with a missing amount of $2284

We were in Boston when we noticed this and it ruined the rest of the holidays for us, a once in a lifetime trip that we saved for a long time for

When we come home we did not get any money back for 3 weeks, we had rent to pay, food to buy and had no money for it

The hotel says it’s not their fault; pre-authorizations don’t physically take money out of the account

Surely it should be pre-authorized once, at check-in, then that transaction authorised when we leaving

The hotel will not take any responsibility for ruining our holiday, they offered us $100 compensation and one night free stay. Which we have refused

The hotel completely ruined our experience, our hoiday plans, everything, and conintue not to take any responsibility for this

Dear Valued Guest,

We are extremely concerned to note your dissatisfaction in the following area:
Debit Card Authorization Hold - Released
Thank you for sparing your time in reviewing the hotel and bringing this matter to our attention and we sincerely hope that you will have no further cause for any complaint in our service and hope you are satisfied with the corrective action taken by us. As you are aware this case has already been raised with the Bank involved as this should not have happened and your problem was rectified.
This is a most unusual case and our staff did all possible ways to have it cleared as quickly as possible. Our team is now recommending all our guest that a credit card is used for the security hold as it wouldn't stop usage of that card, while a debit card would prevent you from using those funds (this also differs from bank to bank).
We continue to be committed to provide you and all our guests with the highest standard of service in the industry.Again, thank you for the comments because we are always looking for ways to improve our service.

Sincerely,

Ronny Yagual

I had read all the reviews before booking the room and felt like I knew what to expect. The majority of the rooms are small and all have differing views. Upon check-in we were able to request a high floor which was great (32), but after we entered the room, the kids were disappointed at the cramped quarters and lack of city view. My husband went to the front desk to inquire about a room change. He was offered the opportunity to look at two different rooms as options to move to, both with a minimal upgrade fee. After looking at both rooms we decided our kids would survive the small room and view. We went back to the front desk to return the keys and I was surprised to find my husband had been working with the famous Mohammed on the room change!! Just as everyone else had written Mohammed did not disappoint! He is the epitome of customer service. As we explained that our kids would be fine with the original room he pressed to inquire which of the two we had looked at best fit our needs. We reiterated that we would keep our original room and avoid additional charges. Mohammed was absolutely the sweetest. He said he wanted our stay to be great, and the kids to be happy. He asked again which room we liked and moved us for 'no charge'!! He even gave us special keys for the kids to use. In a city routinely rumored to be less than friendly, Mohammed is single handedly dispelling that myth. The New Yorker and Mohammed are a NYC gem.

So let me preface this by saying my trip to New York was smack dab in the middle of hurricane Sandy, I've just now gotten the sour taste out of my mouth from the HORRIBLE and I do mean HORRIBLE management team. To get the reviews of the actual property out of the way I will start by saying that if you are going to New York, Miami, DC or another equally large city is it totally unrealistic to expect an immaculate room. At least for a reasonable rate. And you don't spend your entire time in the room because, hello, you're on vacation. So as long as the room is moderately clean and in a good location I'm generally fine. The location of the hotel is awesome, right in the middle of everything and close to Times Square. The rooms were typical, two beds, small bathroom. For the first three days of my trip I was extremely happy. Then Hurricane Sandy hit and we had to stay in New York for another 3 nights. They actually gave us a pretty good rate for the next 3 nights, however because I was traveling with a friend we used two separate cards to pay for the room. And then they charged my card, for the wrong amount. Upon check out I went to get this charge corrected and had to be directed to the manager. Bridgit, the manager was the rudest person I have ever met in my entire life. Not sure if she's unfamiliar with the concept of human decency but when someone is stuck in a city because of a natural disaster and you have overcharged them on an already exorbitantly priced trip telling them to "calm down" isn't the way to go. You also shouldn't tell them "I have your card number, I can charge you whatever i want". I would probably recommend this hotel, its the cheapest 3 star hotel in manhattan without bed bugs. However, they have seriously got to work on their management staff. Seriously.

This was our second visit to the New Yorker Hotel as its location is perfect for exploring the city. The hotel is right opposite Maddison square garden and above penn station, so you can easily get the air train and subway directly to the hotel without having to take a more expensive taxi (air train $5 and then the cost of your subway ticket, you don't have to make any changes other than from the air train to the subway...easy!). If you can email the hotel before hand and ask for a room with a view, or pay that little bit extra when booking, because the views really are worth it, really you want a room on the 30th floor or above. The hotel staff are friendly, helpful and really made us feel like nothing was too much trouble (a huge thank you must go to Ana on the front desk).

Another bonus of this hotel has to be the tick tock diner, it's a tourists dream! Serving the most amazing breakfast menu, with super size portions and bottomless coffees, and not to mention their New York vanilla cheese cake, the best we found in the big apple. The pace is fast, but its understandable when you see ow busy it can get, although you don't feel rushed to move on.

I understand some of the rooms can be a little on the small side, but as are most of the rooms in most NYC hotels. On both of our visits to this hotel our rooms have been more than adequate and more importantly very clean, we definitely didn't feel they were to small (plenty of room for all our shopping bags). As said, maybe opt for a room view a view is space is important to you, paying a little extra, does seem to result in a slightly large room.

Overall this is a great hotel, with great service, facilities and the perfect location! Can't wait to return!

Room Tip: Book a room with a view, or ask for a room n the 30th floor or above.

This hotel was advertised on Hotwire as a 4-Star option however it definitely is NOT that. The rooms are dated and small. The bathroom is even smaller with zero counter space and insuffucient outlets. Who designs a bathroom with no countertops???? The shower area is old, small and dated. This place needs a major facelift. If you're looking for a true 4-Star, stay elsewhere! I would not stay there again.
