“Overall great experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 days ago NEW

Overall we had a great experience at this hotel. The front desk watched our bags as we arrived before check in and they didn't have any rooms ready. The staff was very polite and efficient. Like previous reviews have stated the hotel is undergoing a renovation but we didn't encounter any issues because of it. Some of the hotel signs were slightly dusty but I rarely heard any noise. We had a renovated room and it was awesome! It was a great size and the bed was super comfy. Only one complaint was there was no individual thermostat in the room. It was a little warm and stuffy but thankfully we were in the city in late April so opening a few windows solved the problem. Only 2 of the 4 windows had screens and it made for a slightly more loud experience then what I would have preferred. The breakfast was great and fresh. Overall I think this hotel was great given the price, amenities, and location. I would definitely stay again.

There is a lot to say about `Hotel 35`, first the positives:- the hotel is in a great position , a block from the Empire State Building , five minute walk from Times Square , Broadway , Macey`s and the main shopping area and resurants. Central Park was also within walking distance, so that was a great start for us on our first visit to the `Big Apple` , as for the hotel itself , we found the guys and girls in reception to be very friendly and helpful , the room we had was clean well decorated and the beds were first class , probably the best hotel bed I've slept in, which was just what you need after a day walking around New York , the bathroom was ok the shower worked fine and the room was again clean, the only real problem we had was with the toilet roll which they seemed very stingy with and had to keep asking for more. Breakfast was basic , cereal , toast , scrambled egg , coffee , tea , but they were free, you could have had a cooked breakfast but you had to pay for that ranging from $9 to $14, it was quite odd to have plastic cutlery and paper plates but to be honest it was not a problem and from there point it must have been easier to clean up after meals. The bar and bar meals in the evening were good and seemed to be well supported . Now the down side :- We were told before we went that there were renovations going on in the hotel , so we did contact Virgin and they told us that it would not affect us and that the renovations that were going on were on other floors so we went with it. On arriving at the hotel on first day first impressions were not great from the outside it looked dingy and the reception was dull and quite small but staff were friendly and as we were told our floor was free from any work , and looked like it was a floor that had already been decorated . But it did affect us in a way because everything was dusty the hand rails , stairs and floor and the guys who were doing the work were leaving there dirty footprints in elevators and the carpets in reception and one day we came back to find several dozen air conditioners in reception all piled up and reception being painted , we also had to share the elevators with the workmen or indeed wait for them to use it before we could which meant waiting some while on occasions. It would have seemed sensible to have closed the hotel for the work to be done and done quicker but obviously that would mean them loosing money so I can understand that was not an option. Also the phones went down one day and no phone calls could be made out and this was as we were told a common thing. Although hotel was quiet there was a lot of noise coming from the road , as they say New York is a city that never sleeps and that is very true , with one night drilling from the road went on all night , its quite odd to be woken at 3`o`clock in the morning with road works going on but again I can understand that this must be the best time to do it because to close this road during the day would cause havoc. In summing up , to be that close to everything we wanted was brilliant and after a busy day out in New York our room was more than adequate we only really used room to sleep in the rest of the time we were out , the breakfast was again adequate as we had our main meals out and I`m sure in time when renovations are done this will be a great hotel to stay in for visiting New York.

Room Tip: Back of hotel away from road and high up.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your feedback. We appreciate hearing from our guests as it provides us with an opportunity to improve our offerings when necessary. We strive to provide the very best hospitality and we enjoy hearing about the positive impacts our amazing team makes with and every guest. I will pass along your praise to our team that impacted your stay in such a positive manner.

As we looked into the occurrence of what created the initial disruption of our phone lines, we found that it was coming from our carriers main office; it was quickly fixed thereafter.

Again, we appreciate your feedback and hope to have another opportunity to exceed your expectations in the near future here at Hotel 35.

Visited for two nights. They have lots of construction. Room was nice and renovated -- but also lots of dust in the hall and elevator. If DUST bothers you, then beware. If not, nice enough place, great location and price.

My partner and I only had a one night stay here but would have been happy to have many more. It is in the most fantastic location right in Herald Square with a view of the Empire state building from our window!! The staff were so helpful allowing us to leave our bags in the hotel before we could check in, and leaving our bags their all day as our flight home was not until the night, they also helped us with all the subways and taxis. There was a lot of renovation going on and a strong smell of paint and lots of dust but were actual rooms were immaculate, and anyway if your in New York city you shouldn't be in the hotel all day!!!

So I have stayed in this hotel on a few occasions over the last few years, I had last stayed with them when it was known as Comfort Inn Manhattan. All I can I say it has gone downhill. We were here during the renovation

Positive:
1. Matt that works downstairs is so lovely and he made our stay a lot more bearable.
2. Location is perfect right next to the subway and walking distance to a lot of places such as Macy's and Times Square.
3. The rooms are clean upon entry

Negative:
1. Breakfast was just a bit let down. When I was there last there were waffles, pastries and some meat. Now it is just eggs, toast, mini muffins, oranges, banana, cereal. It was just awful after one night we ended up eating elsewhere.

2. When we arrived to our room we were given a double even though we paid for a double double. The lady that checked us in didn't say anything. I went back downstairs and told her she has given us the wrong room. She said they did not have any double doubles available and that we should check back tomorrow. If I did not say anything she would have put us in a room that was below what we paid. Also during check in she was more concerned about a parcel than checking us in.

3. The first room we were in did not have ac.

4. The next room we were in did have ac but did not have chairs. It had a table but no chairs. So you had no choice but to sit on the bed which you don't always want to do.

5. Wifi was not working for a few days and when it did it was AWFUL I got better wifi on the subway than I did in the hotel. Such a let down.

6. The bathroom was nice however there was no way to air the room out such as an extractor fan or a window we could reach to open it.

7. Room was not cleaned properly each day.

My husband and I have just returned to the UK after a fantastic 3 week honeymoon in the US. For 5 nights at the end of our trip we stayed at Hotel 35.
Where to start when it comes to reviewing this hotel...
We stayed on the 10th floor in one of the newly renovated rooms- they have been completed well and look lovely in a modern black and white theme, but attention to detail is missing. The wood work in the hallway chipped - the paintwork is a bit messy and no air conditioning which was unfortunate.
At first we really didn't think that the renovation work was going to be an issue with a pleasant room and friendly staff but it really did impact our holiday. To the drilling during the day and the extend that the contractors used the lift. However my greatest concern was the blocked staircase, (rubbish bags, sofa cushions, rubbish bins). Considering there was a fire evacuation on our first night and the lift was so congested during the day this needed to be taken really seriously - once reported to reception it was sorted promptly but it shouldn't have taken a complain to sort.
The biggest disappointment was definitely the breakfast - there was only a few options toast, muffins, apples or oats...not very satisfying and you had to use paper plates and plastic cutlery. Not exactly screaming 4 star!
As mention before the staff were friendly - especially Matt who has been mentioned in several reviews and the location is perfectly positioned in the middle of all the must see attractions time square, Empire State Building etc..
Would I stay here again?....maybe once the renovation is complete and all the other factors are put right.

We stayed here for 5 nights with the use of a Groupon. It is right by Madison Square Garden, Macys, Empire State Bldg. and Herald Square. It's close to a lot of things. We had several problems while we were there and they were addressed, but buyer beware!

Upon checking into our room on the 11th floor, our keys would not work. The room was beautifully decorated in black and white. We went back downstairs and had them reprogrammed and they still didn't work. Called from my phone to the desk and she sent someone up to try, to no avail. He let us in with his master key and then someone else came up to try and get them to work. He had no success so we left for lunch and he said he'd get us new keys by the time we arrived back. Once we got back, we got keys that worked.

The biggest problem was that they are in the middle of renovating the hotel. We were put up in a newly renovated room which was done very nicely except that it had NO air conditioning. We didn't realize this till we were unpacked and too tired to address it. We felt like they should have told us we would not have A/C or given us a choice of which type of room we wanted.

We also had no table and chairs to sit in. There was room for them under the windows, but not there. We inquired and they said guess they forgot to put them in. So, they brought us 2 chairs and a table. The man told us we were the first ones to stay in the room since it had been renovated. Clearly if was not ready to be occupied.

After not getting any sleep due to keeping the window open for air and listening to jackhammers, sirens and traffic noise, we requested a room with A/C. We were told only the unrenovated rooms had A/C but they were sold out for the night and to check the next day.

We checked the following morning and were told if we pack up our luggage and they store it, we can move to a room with A/C later in the afternoon. SO, we packed up, left our luggage with them. When we returned we were given a room on the 2nd floor with A/C (window unit) but with little lighting and obviously needing updating.

Now to the breakfast. I had read reviews that the included breakfast was really nice. I guess people have different ideas of nice. Each morning we had scrambled eggs with a large container of ketchup beside it. No meat at all. They had a toaster, waffles, muffins and cereal and oatmeal. There was also orange juice, coffee and teas. The butter was so hard that you couldn't put it on your toast, It wouldn't spread, just tore the toast. After 3 mornings of that, we ate breakfast elsewhere and it was the right choice.

Now the elevators. The elevators are the original ones built in 1903! They are very tiny and very slow. There are only 2 and the workers renovating the hotel also use them. So if you don't want to spend a lot of time waiting for an elevator get a lower room and take the circular stairs.

Also their website advertised free wi-fi, free bottled water and free daily newspaper. Upon checki n was told the wi-fi wasn't working. We never had free bottled water or a newspaper.

Once this hotel is renovated it will probably be a good choice, but with all the things I just mentioned, I would not recommend spending your vacation here. There were a lot of frustrations which people don't need on vacation.

If you do stay here, be sure to ask if your room will have air conditioning.

Room Tip: Choose a lower room to get less outside noise and make sure it has A/C.
