“Nice place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 26, 2007

It was the first time I stayed at a hostel and it was better than I expected. The conditions are great, good structure, nice people although the service was not very good, the people in the front desk are very unfriendly sometimes. My overall rating is 4.

It's a very big place, so expect a lot of people to be around. Definitely expect school groups, of all ages, to be around (and noisy). It has a convenient location for a hostel, near the subway and central park. The staff behind reception are not overly friendly, then again they had a long queue of people to deal with. The travel desk is a very helpful, and the employees know a lot. There is a small bakery/sandwich shop, which has good prices. The rooms and decor are slightly old but they were in the middle of construction during my stay. The other travellers I met were very friendly, and come from all corners of the world. The only real downside was the cleanliness of the bathrooms and toilets. But you'll survive it. Overall, a good place to stay for (compared to other places in NYC) a bargain.

As this was my 2nd time staying in the hostel but my 1st as a single traveller I knew what to expect. Though there was some problems this year. I had booked for a 6 bedded male in February so guessed that my reservation would of been 100% ok for when I arrived in June. Wrong when I arrived I was told that I would be put in a 12 bedded dorm (which i didn't actually mind in the end) and that I would have a split reservation and would have to pack up and sign out after 5 nights. You have to make sure you have everything packed and checked out for 11am though you can leave your baggage with security you have come back at 4pm (though I would come back later as lots of people are trying to check in at that time) that day and would then be given a new room. Luckily I was finally given a 6 bedded dorm. The dorms are not that bad and are clean.
There is continuous work being done to the outside of the hostel and workmen will most probably wake you up at about 8am so bring some ear plugs. Apart from that the security is very tight always monitoring who is coming and going and you always have to show your paper work to get in. I would bring your own padlock saving you paying out at the hostel shop for one. The lockers are big so that helps. The showers were clean and cleaned everyday. They have regular day tours which are good to check out and only cost $10. Don't be fooled by the website there are no evening tours. This was the same as last year but they still have on the website that they do.
If you need to check your e-mail/internet there is computers on the ground floor which cost $2 for 20mins.
The hostel is a stone's throw from 103rd station you can by 1 day metro cards from the shop for $7 or a week pass for $35. The subway is 24 hours but trains do not run as frequent in the early hours if your coming back after a night out. Though I recommend going to 96th Street and catching the 2 or 3 line as this is an express service and stops at selected stations halfing your time to get downtown (the 1 line stops at every stop and can take along time getting to and from). It is in a good neighbourhood don't be fooled by the housing projects that surround the area. I walked back many times after 1am on my own and felt safe There is some great pizza places especially on 96th street. There is also a bodega just across the road from the hostel which sells drinks, food etc. There is also a diner and a great locals bar called 'The Tavern' near by and for $3 for a pint you can't go wrong.

If you don't mind a cheap place then I would go. Its by no means the worst hostel to stay in and with big groups would be even better.Though if you travel on your own be prepared to be moved around as they do prioritize groups rather than single travellers.

Hostelling International - New York
I had not planned a trip to New York City before and was a little apphrensive about safety, price, cleanliness and location. Well I’m pleased to announce that all of my concerns were left behind when I entered the lobby of the Hostelling International - New York, located on 891 Amsterdam Avenue. My daughters and I stayed in a dorm room that had personal lockers large enough for our suit cases, the bathrooms were clean, and it was close to the subway and bus stops. People entering the dorm areas had to present their card and receipt for entry. A great safety measure., since it is open 24/7. NYC Hostel was within easy walking distance to The Cathedral Church of St John of the Divine and some great eateries also.
Our stay was made with memories of wanting to return here!
P.S. New Yorkers are friendly!

  • Liked — Clean, safe, location and the staff were helpful, efficent and friendly
  • Disliked — Some construction going on around the building but that seems to be everywhere in NYC!

Cheap, big place, and close to subway line no. 1. Because it is so big, it's not the type of hostel that makes it easy to meet people except those in your room, but it's in a fairly quiet neighbourhood. At the time of my trip it was Spring break so the place was over runned with French school kids, but there were other travellers of all ages. It's clean and comfortable, towel and sheets provided. Recommendable for single travellers and people on a budget.

  • Liked — clean rooms and proximity to subway
  • Disliked — bathroom got rather dirty after a bunch of school girls went thru it

Fabulous for hosteling. $30/night. Cheap/ safe sleeps in NYC. Upper Westside. Brilliant. Beats out other hotels, b/c of price, location, and overall value! Go if you can.

I stayed at this hostel for a month in March and can highly recommend it for independent travellers. As a single female travelling alone, I was reassured by the security in the hostel and the area around Amsterdam Avenue/Broadway was perfectly safe during the day (although I experienced no problems at night either). Right near 103 st subway station.
Rooms are not bad, I was in a 6-bed room. Obviously you have to endure other people coming in at all hours and waking you up but hey, its new york so don't spend too much time in your room! Shared bathroms are large, but showers not that great, bathroom also gets a bit messy once the masses start piling in at about 0930 in the morning.
Overall, I had a great time here, the staff we friendly and helpful, and the hostel tours around NY neighbourhoods like the Bronx were good value.
