“A fine stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2013

We blindly booked into this hotel by way of a package deal offered by Southwest Airlines. Not having ever seen it, and having read some negative reviews about it after our non refundable booking, we had a bit of trepidation about the property. But our fears were unfounded. It's a perfectly comfortable boutique hotel, recently tastefully renovated, and it's very convenient to subways at Grand Central and to the Newark Express bus service to EWR. Built in the 1920's, we suspect, it has a curiously small elevator that's a bit quirky in its operation but services its riders with no surprises. The staff is exceedingly friendly and seem to have a knack for remembering their guests by room number. The room we had (a double ensuite) was small but hardly cramped. There's a small closet to stow luggage after unpacking into a roomy 3-drawer bureau. Free wifi is a real treat, as New York hotels generally seem to nickel-and-dime guests for this service. And it's quiet! And it's extremely reasonably priced, too!!

On our next trip to the Big Apple, we shall surely try to book in here again, no question about it. We have also enjoyed the nearby Scotty's Diner, also reasonably priced versus its nearby competitors and full of friendly helpful waitstaff. So if you don't require the madness of a Times Square area venue, then The Seton is your kind of home away from home.

We had booked 2 nights at the Seton Hotel at the end of our recent vacation. We arrived at the hotel and I was very surprised to see several steps up to the door, combining that and the fact that the door opens outwards is not a good combination for anyone trying to gain access to this hotel with their luggage in hand. After we had finally got into the hotel and proceeded to check in with no problems with the staff on duty being friendly and efficient, Once we had checked in we were told about the guest lounge and the free tea and coffee. We were then told to open the grey door and take the elevator up to the 4th floor. We pressed the call button and waited a good 5 minutes before the elevator arrived. Once we got into the elevator is was very clear that it was very old and had only had a quick refurb to make it look a little more modern. After a very slow ride up to the 4th floor we found our room, when I say we found our room we found the door ajar. We went into the room and found it to be a standard New York hotel room. A very small double bed (and I mean small). We did not find this unusual as we have stayed in New York before.. The bathroom was large and at first glance seemed to be well finished. We unpacked and decided to chill out in the room for the rest of the night. Later that evening a friend came over to visit us in our room and went to reception and asked for our room number at this point the receptionist gave him the key to another room by mistake. We found this to be rather frightening and to be a total lack of any sort of security as to who was asking for what key. We feel that this policy should be reviewed sooner rather than later. During our stay we found the 1 very slow elevator to really be annoying as it could take up to 5 minutes to get the elevator. The first night in the hotel I was kept awake most of the night with the cold and the noise. The room was freezing and the fact that there was a through the window a/c unit made it 10 times worse. We could hear ever bit of road noise and shout from out side. My partner shook me out of a doze to point out that all we could hear in the room was the very loud noise of the water pipes. Combine this along with the cold and all the noise we got very little sleep. The next morning was worse. Our room was right next to the shared bathroom, It was in and out all the time with other guests knocking and shouting with no regard to any other guests. We decided to go out and do some sightseeing. We got back to the hotel about 2.30 to find that not 1 room on our floor had been serviced. Come on guys speed up the service guests want to come back to a room that is fresh and clean. Through out our visit we found the slow elevator to be very annoying and the fact that there are no stairs that guests can use you have no choice but to use this outdated contraption.

As I looked a little closer I did notice that the finish was very rough in almost every area of the hotel. Plaster work needed to be sanded or repaired all over the place. Paint finish was very poor in fact was peeling in our bathroom.

We did find the wifi was good but come on and get the rest of the hotel finished to the right standard that you advertise
We would not choose this hotel again as we found it very poor value with the comfort offered

Room Tip: I cannot recommend any rooms in this hotel for anyone that wants to get some piece and quiet when no...

Thank you for your recent stay at our hotel. We are glad that you found our staff friendly and efficient! We recently completed a multi million dollar renovation and have been receiving great reviews from our guests. I am sorry that you did not find all aspects to your satisfaction. We will certainly address your comments wherever possible. Thank you and we hope you give us another opportunity to serve you in the future.

This hotel is centrally located and my business contacts are all within walking distance.
This is important for my business trip but the hotel itself is quite old and Expedia's price is very inflated. I do value their free wifi and complementary coffee. That is why I will consider to come back if the price is right. But if I come with my family, I would add little more and stay with better hotel. Room is depressing and just right to sleep. No safe, no in room movies, very Spartan !

We were pleased with our accommodations at Seton Hotel. The room was quite small as is typical in New York but well appointed, clean, and everything was as described on the website. There are not a lot of services offered by the hotel but we spent our days and evenings out in the city so this was not an issue for us. We found the front desk staff to be friendly and helpful. The location was a real asset; only 3 blocks to Grand Central station and all the transit connections there. A good base for a holiday in New York. Minor negative - no safe in the room and the front desk did not have sufficient lock boxes for every room in the hotel.

Room Tip: We took a street side room as we were running the A/C every night and it effectively cancelled out a...

The Seton Hotel, 144 E. 40th, was a traveler's delight. This newly renovated botique hotel sits at the headwaters of everything one wants to see while in NYC, that plus a stellar staff make it a perfect location for a vacation in the city. The rooms are small but very well appointed, and quite comfortable, the contemporary decor very stylish and varied from room to room, our accomodations were ensuite and as close to perfection as possible. Grand Central Station is close by, and the midtown attractions are within easy walking distance. All that plus very reasonable prices make this hotel a must.

Room Tip: Ask the staff about Scotty's Diner, breakfast there is a NYC experience. Coffee is available 24...

This is a great place to make your base to explore the City of New York. Room was small but very comfortable. After a busy day exploring you need a good shower and good nights sleep. Our room delivered both and the hotel staff were very helpful and pleasant.

This place was perfect. I just needed a place to sleep while getting my son settled in college and i could not have asked for better. I had an economy room and it was clean, the bathroom that was shared was perfect, never dirty and i never had to wait. I would stay there again. The front desk was a big help and the staff very friendly. I have stayed in many hotels in NYC and paid crazy amounts but this one, located just a few blocks from grand central - perfect. Can't wait to go back and kudos to the staff for being so accomdating and helpful.
