I returned home from a trip to shanghai and Beijing a couple of months ago. Anyone who lives in NYC knows about the horrible state of Chinese (and Mexican) food here. It's simply turned into a race to the bottom with just about every Chinese restaurant (with few notable exceptions, like shun lee) offering ridiculously cheap, awful disgusting stuff they try to pass off as food.
A friend of mine from Detroit stumbled onto Szechuan gourmet a couple of weeks ago and wanted me to check it out. It is kinda non-descript on the outside, heavy Asian clientele inside. the atmosphere is pretty much like what I found in china. uninspiring, clean enough a place to eat. The food, however, was quite inspiring with authentic dishes (things you haven't heard of) prepared like what I had in china. reasonably priced too.
so if you've avoided Chinese food in NYC, give Szechuan gourmet a try, it will be good and different!
