I had previously given ZIP112 a glowing review and while the points about location and appropriateness for single female travellers still hold, I felt like I should give a more up-to-date review.
Stayed in ZIP112 again in late September 2011 and to be honest, was disappointed at how the building had become untidy. The place was covered in dust, it felt like the towels supplied had not been washed (they stank of stale-smell). The hostel needs a serious clean, frankly! The heat was absolutely sweltering (it being September) but the air-con in my room didn't work, and then when it finally did kick in, the entire circuit of lights fused! It took the host over 12 hours to fix this - leaving a room with four beds in it enclosed in darkness. I was also disappointed by the brisk nature of the host. On my final day, I was trying to pack my suitcase and the host came up to the room to take my key from me. This was at 10AM, and I wasn't due to check out until 1PM. I felt like an inconvenience to the host, who had clearly just dropped into the building at whatever time suited him, as opposed to what we had pre-arranged.
After my stay in 2010, I would have recommended ZIP112 to anyone. Friends of mine stayed there because of my expressed recommendation. However, I don't think I will be back. I returned to New York in October 2011 and found a very reasonable apartment in Nolita for around the same price as ZIP112, much better location (in Manhattan), cleaner and just better in general. So, before booking a hostel/cheap hotel in New York, check out airbnb.com and rent an actual apartment or do a homestay instead.
