“Accessible to the Not-Super-Artistic-Crowd!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

One of my favourite places in Harlem. It's small but feels so big; the art is pretty accessible and the staff are friendly. Definite stop to explore while in Harlem. I recommend taking your time to go through the museum and setting a good chunk of time to go through the gift shop to check out the really cool and hard-to-find-at-home-books! I will make this a regular stop on my visits to NY.

“Small museum with a clear mission.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2012

Every exhibition at the Studio Museum is well thought out, beautifully displayed and ardently supported with explanatory material. Unlike some monolithic and cold New York museums, the Studio Museum is warm and welcoming both for individuals and school groups. The neighborhood is safe and there are good restaurants nearby. Often the work of as-yet-unknown artists is displayed along with the more familiar names. Here you will see paintings, sculpture, textiles, photographs and mixed media. Frequently the shows have a playful tone to make the work approachable and whimsical and the book store is filled with wonderful items of all price ranges.

“Nice rather than challenging art”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 13, 2010

Visited the Studio Museum for the first time. It made for a pleasant break after having walked around Hamilton Heights and St Nicholas area on a very hot day. We were a little disappointed by the art itself - given the history of Black society in the US we expected something with a little bit more edge, challenging viewers' own attitudes and opinions.

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 6, 2009

Having visited New York several times, we’ve seen the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Guggenheim, the Whitney, the MOMA, etc. So, during this trip we wanted to see something new. I must say that the Studio Museum Harlem was a great choice. We visited the museum specifically to see Barkley Hendricks’s “Birth of the Cool”. It was an amazing exhibit! His work is nothing less than breathtaking. In addition, the museum staff was quite lovely and helpful. We happened to be in town on a Target Free Sunday, but I would have paid double the admission price to visit this wonderful museum!

“What a Surprise!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2008

Everyone should come here -- Harlem New York. Thelma Gordon, Director and Chief Curator at the Studio Museum, has found a way to make good art available for all; I think everyone should take the time to make their way to Harlem just to check out this museum. A suggested donation of $7 for adults compare that to MOMA; I'm in no way suggesting that a low price leads to cheap art;
We caught the Kehinde Wiley "The World Stage:Africa Lagos~Dakar". Simply amazing and awe-inspiring; I hope this museum will continue to grow and change; it's really good to see such an institution in Harlem; We are definitely trying to figure out how to become a benefactor for the museum even though we live in Richmond VA.
