I stayed here for three nights with my husband and 9 year old son. Valet parking worked well--hotel easy to get to by car. Room was very clean, nice view from the 7th floor, and fairly spacious by NYC standards (very high ceilings helped with this effect).
The pro's for the hotel:
--Exceptionally nice doormen. Seriously, nicest ever.
--Remarkably comfortable beds (and we are picky).
--If you sign up for the free in-touch account, there is free wifi in your room and you get $15 of goodies from the mini bar.
The cons follow:
--DO NOT book a double room at this hotel. They are all on the north side of the building and you will not sleep more than 3 consecutive hours per night (regardless of the comfort of the bed). I should mention that we used to live in NYC, on Columbus on the Upper West Side and in the Lower East Side before it got nice, and we are well versed in the noise that is inherent in city life. This is how the night went, EVERY NIGHT:
10:30 pm, garbage truck pulls up to service bay on ground floor under the north side of the building and spends 20 minutes loading/unloading. It sounds like they are in your room.
1:30 am, they take down the set from the club across the street (Billboard) and an 18 wheeler truck will sit, running, in the street while a crew wheels stuff out the club and up the truck ramp and occasionally demolishes stuff that gets left on the side of the road. It will sound like they are in your room.
1:30 am until set down, honking because the semi is blocking the street and they won't move. It is as though they are in your room with you.
4:30 am, every day, and I wish I was kidding, the GLASS RECYCLING truck pulls up to the service bay and spends 20 minutes loading/unloading. It will sound like the entire island of Manhattan's empty beer bottles are in your room with you.
5:30-6 am, another garbage truck (trash compactor?) starts running. You will want to be anywhere but in your room at this point.
--The front desk staff were flat out unsympathetic. I'm sure they hear it a lot and it is not their fault, but I AM SURE THERE WAS AT LEAST ONE OTHER OPEN ROOM IN THE HOTEL they could have moved us to but didn't because they said there wasn't one available. It was tough being in NYC with lots to do and a kid that didn't get to sleep through the night once.
This is all too bad, I've happliy stayed at Kimpton properties for years, especially when in DC, and I've hosted events at one in the Boston area, but I'm put off by the way this was(not) handled by the staff and feel like they were really dismissive of our concerns. So, if you get a high room off the north face you might be OK, but heaven help you if there is a problem and you want help resolving it.
[Kudos also to the young man who checked us out, he seemed sincerely sorry and was very nice, but it was a bit late in the game and didn't address our 3 nights of bad sleep.]
