I stayed at the Doubletree Times Square South with a tour group that was here for a professional development workshop. My husband came along for the trip and we both agreed that this was a fantastic hotel experience.
Rooms are small, but all rooms in New York are and this one was quite well appointed, clean and modern. The bed was unbelievably comfortable...seriously, I would love to know what mattress and pillow they use. If someone from that hotel is reading this, please tell me!!
Sink area in the bathroom was VERY small, but the shower was quite large. Ultimately, it's New York and space is at a premium. Stop whining about it people. It you want space, there are a million other places in the world to visit where you will have space coming out the wazoo...but they won't be New York. So there's the sacrifice.
We had breakfast included with the "tour", so we had breakfast there each morning and the breakfast was very good, with everything from eggs, bacon, potatoes, oatmeal, french toast or pancakes, pastries, cereal, yogurt, fruit, etc. Really something for everyone. Service in the restaurant was great. Since the breakfast was included with our tour I have no idea how much it would have cost normally though. I have tried to look it up, but haven't found anything, so I have no idea if this would be a good deal to have, or not.
The location was excellent for a tourist. It was close to everything. Times Square is, of course, close, although I hate Time Square and want to avoid it at all times, like the plague. Luckily, this hotel is tucked on a quiet side street and the crowds and noise of the city/Time's Square were never a problem. That said, we were able to walk to a lot of different locals from the hotel. There is even a little comedy club two doors down that we visited one night. Comedy show finished and we were able to walk ten steps and go up to bed! Ahh bliss!
So why subtracting one star? Well, if we had paid for this room, we would have been paying a LOT. Currently on Expedia, this room is pricing in at $400/night. This is a general complaint about New York hotels too, but I have found excellent hotels in New York for considerably less. Parking is something like $42 extra per night too. I'm sure our tour got a discount, but if we were to have come and stayed at this hotel on our own, we would have paid $1200 for three night....assuming we didn't drive and didn't have to pay for parking. That's roundtrip flight to Europe...for the cost of three days in New York.
So yes, this was a great hotel, but it's not the full package. With some searching you can find better deals. Not bigger hotels....but better deals.
