I came on business to this hotel. Like others have said, it's about a 15 minute walk to Times Square, which would make this hotel more of a Midtown hotel than Times Square. But, it's still convenient.
If you have any business in the Garment/Fashion District, this hotel would be an excellent choice.
Generally I found the hotel to be clean, though my shower had mold in it along much of the grout and the curtains were a bit torn on the top. Otherwise, the rest of the room was clean and sufficient for my stay.
This hotel architecturally is tall and narrow. I was on the 18th floor, and there were six rooms on my floor. That means everybody is in close proximity to the elevator and any noise and chatter that happens outside your room. My room was small, but the bathroom was ample size -- the counter and sink area, along with the shower, were a nice size. So, I give them an A+ for room design in small spaces.
My room was a "city view" -- what that means is that you'll be facing the street, not the building behind the Doubletree. For those who haven't gone to NYC before, a street view (aka "city view") means you'll be looking at the buildings across the street unless you're high enough up to see beyond. The 18th floor was not high enough. But, I do think that "city view" is best because then you get the sunshine in the morning, which helps you to wake up.
The staff was attentive and courteous. All smiles. I appreciated that. This would be typical Hilton.
I did not eat room service or in the restaurant downstairs -- instead I opted for deli's around town. There are several deli's within a 5 min. walking distance, open early and late.
There is a fitness center in the basement. I don't think it gets used much. While clean and well designed in, again, a small space -- the two elliptical trainers were broken so I opted for the treadmill. There are free weights and weight machines, along with yoga mats and free water and towels.
