“Great staff, beautiful property, not so great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 13, 2013

I got a package deal for NYC in Feb13. The hotel in the deal was Marrakech Hotel so we couldn't actually chose. When we arrived there we loved the atmosphere and the staff was super nice, actually I emailed them several times before arriving and they always answered on time and very friendly. Our room was cosy and clean, the shower was huge and the bed very comfy. We did not spend too much time at the hotel because it was our first time in NYC and we spent the 7 days exploring this amazing city, but I would definitely recommend this accommodation. The only "issues" that we had was the internet connection - it wasn´t very good at our room, you actually had to go the the main area by the front desk to get a good reception. Also the location, absolutely loved the Upper West Side, but as a first time tourist I would chose something more central (Ie Midtown, or anything below 100 ave.) Anyway I loved my stay at Marrakech!

Room Tip: near the entrance or you won't have internet at your room!

I stayed here in February 2013 with my partner, we got a great last minute deal and we were both so pleased.

It is in a great location - not right in the middle of times square but close enough. There is a subway outside so everything is easy to get to. The staff were really helpful, giving us good deals and tips for saving money.

The rooms were very small but the idea of going to New York is to experience everything, all we used the room for was sleeping and storing everything we bought! So for that it was fine. The reception room was nice too with free WIFI.

Overall good experience, would return

My review is intended to give the pros and cons of this hotel. First of all, the location was great. Far enough away from the congestion and noise of mid-town, but located right next to a subway. The location also offers many places to eat from McDonalds to Jerusalem Restaurant for excellent falafal and lamb gyros, to the yummy lobster rolls and burgers at Toast - all within easy walking distance. Starbucks is next door - Rite Aid and Duane Reade across the road and Gristedes Grocery store down the block. The Upper West Side is more subdued than the touristy mid-town area and is close to Central Park and the Hudson River but just a 7 or 8 stop subway ride to Times Square. Upon arrival, the staff were very pleasant and helpful. In fact, I made a request for a room on a lower level and was granted one on the lobby level. The narrow stairs from the street to the reception desk are a little cramped and steep. The hotels "bar" area is comfortable and you can relax and wait for your shuttle to pick you up after you have checked out. Now for the actual rooms. The bed was comfortable and the room was on the small side, but was okay for just 2 nights. The bathroom is very small - to be expected in this type of hotel... in fact our friends stayed at the Belvedere Hotel and they said the same thing about their bathroom. On the negative side: bathroom needs more hooks (on back of door & walls) to hang towels, clothes, toiletry bags. An easy fix - why not do this? Would make life much easier for us travelers. By the way, the towels were clean, white and fluffy and a decent size. Definitely a plus. The carpets in the rooms is ugly and smelly and needs to go! But my main negative was the air conditioner - my god, was it noisy! Could not hear anything but the noisy air conditioning unit and made it very difficult to sleep. Be nice to get some spit system units in those rooms! Loved the ceiling fan! Overall, a decent experience and the staff really are helpful and friendly. Not luxury but decent.

Room Tip: If you dont like stairs, (no elevator), ask for a room on lower floor.

Thank you so much for your response Lizardqueen27!

We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and are glad you were able to enjoy the restaurants and sights in the area. Im sorry about the noisy AC but due to being located in a historical building we were not able to install a different AC system but hopefully this wasnt too much of an inconvenience. We hope to see you again in the furture.

Best,

My friends and I stayed there for the 4th of July in 2012. For NYC you can't beat the price and the rooms, while small, gave me exactly what I needed... a nice shower, TV, AC, and a comfy place to sleep. It's also perfectly located - next to a Starbucks, grocery stand, and the subway is across the street. I slept soundly and comfortably in the cool AC. The staff were super friendly and always there to help with bags up the stairways. The place is well-staffed 24hrs a day and that made me feel really secure. We stayed 4 days and left all of our stuff out in plain sight in the room - never had any problems in regards to something coming up missing. They did turn our AC off during the day but I don't blame them one bit and felt badly that we had left it on... not realizing until we were on the train to Times Square. Keeping their bills down keeps mine reasonable, too! I am going back on Wednesday and will look forward to my stay. They even kept our bags after checkout in a back storage area, carefully labeling each and every bag, until we returned that evening to go home. That's above and beyond in my book!

Room Tip: It doesn't matter what floor you're on... they help you with your bags. Yes, the stairs are...

Just back from 4 nights in this hotel, right next to the subway on 103 street. Hotel has lots of stairs and we stayed on the 5th floor. We arrived early and were able to check in at 9.3o which was great. Room very small, we were upgraded to a queen sized room but bed seemed a double. No wifi in room but has everything else you need. Fine hotel but think you could get better for the price.

Stayed there at the end of may for 4 days booked a twin room. My 3rd time in NYC and was a bit worried as normally stay in timesquare and this place is on the upper west side. A saving of £300 though was well worth the gamble. Hotel was clean rooms were spacious (rare for ny) had a double bed each, bathroom was clean and super power shower! AC in room too. They give free wifi in lobby lucky our room was adjacent to lobby so we could pick it up in our room.
Starbucks below for breakie. Grocery store too so sorted for snacks and tea. Subway stops on the corner so we got a $30 weekly pass and we were sorted no need for cabs as subway is 24hr. Location and price perfect.
Now the staff: without offending anyone I've had some pretty shocking experiences previously in New York with service but these guys couldn't do more for you. Very welcoming always smiling very attentive. One guy stands out Robinson (I think) so helpful and friendly really did his best to look after us and give us advise during our stay. Great guy
Definitely would return to stay there without hesitation

Last visit to New York last May, was very good, visiting the places I enjoy in the city.
In spring N.Y. is a joy with so many flowers, the tulips were magnificent.
As I decide to stay a couple of days more, made a reservation through Hotwire, and I was offered the Marrakech Hotel. .Very bad hotel, you are not told there is no elevator, besides to enter the building are some 30 steps to climb. Dark, the reception area, and very dark the rooms.
Nothng to say in favor of this place, it is a real shame that companies that offer hotels, hostels, places to stay in any part of the world, are cheating on people. I want to add it was not cheap at all. Expensive!!! Well I know it is New York city, but be careful making reservations..........

Hello Maria,

Thank you for taking the time to write about your stay with us. I am sorry you did not fully enjoy your time here. Since the time you stayed here we have made quite a few changes to our property including adding new lighting in the hallways and rooms. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about the elevators since this is a historical building and it is not allowed, but our bellman staff is on duty 24/hours a day to ensure that all of our guests do not have to lift any luggage or bags up the stairs. Please accept my sincere apologies for the inconveniences you encountered and we do hope to see you again in the future.

Best regards,

Angely Perez
