“Great base to lay your head.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013

I have to say I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews on the Marrakech that are written here on Tripadvisor but in my completely honest opinion I think people should take them with a pinch of salt! We arrived at the Marrakech after a long delayed flight and were told we were upgraded for free which was a nice touch, if I'm being honest I'm not sure what the room we had booked would of been like because the room we were given was basic but pretty much perfect for what we needed! I did hear one of the reception staff mentioning they had recently updated a lot of the rooms so maybe we got one of the newly decorated ones. We were on the 2nd floor so a few stairs to climb but nothing we couldn't handle, I imagine it would get tiresome climbing all the way to the 4th floor however so try to ask for a room lower down or look for an elevator building elsewhere!

The bed was comfortable with clean fresh linen daily, not a lot of room as others have mentioned but this is New York we're talking about... space comes at a premium for everyone (hence why they build UPWARDS and not outwards) and all we were doing was coming straight into the room after a long day exploring and crashing into the bed so space wasn't really needed. The bathroom was clean and sufficent enough, unlike others we got a plentiful supply of hot water once we'd found the perfect spot to set the shower at! The rooms seemed to be quite warm constantly, which wasn't too much of a problem as there were air-con units.

The best parts were the great location, the upper west side has a lot to see and do and the 103rd subway was right outside the front door meaning you have fast links to the rest of the city. There were a few great diners near where we had breakfast Metro Diner and Broadway Diner, both reminiscent of 50's America with the ridiculously cheap classics like pancakes and bagels to eat. And the amazingly attentive staff, whenever we needed something they were there in a flash, always greeting us with a smile and a good morning/night when we walked through reception and offering suggestions for things to see and do.

The hotel had a very 'hostel' like feel to it, I can see it not being a great choice for the older amongst us and maybe that's why its getting less than great reviews but for us it was the absolutely best deal we could of asked for!

My sister and I decided to try the Marrakech on a recent trip to NYC as the price was enticing. As noted in other reviews, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and the hotel is in a very convenient location, right at the 103 St stop of the No 1 subway. The club atmosphere of the lobby is fun. On the downside: the "club" isn't open very many hours, so when we got back and wanted a drink at 10 p.m., it was not available. The cable TV was not in working order on the night we were there, only 1 out of 3 of us had hot water for our shower (this is really why I gave the "poor" rating), the rooms are TINY, and the hotel has none of the sound dampening properties (thick walls and doors) of standard hotels. When the party next door came in at 3:40 a.m. and flushed the toilet, everyone in my room woke up. I would try the hotel again in hopes that they have addressed the plumbing in some way. At the very least, even a bargain hotel should offer hot water!

Great location – there is a subway half a minute walk from the hotel/hostel, and most of the main tourist attractions are just a short ride away. There are also a good variety of shops and restaurants nearby. The rooms were cleaned daily, some days better than others. The personal were friendly and helpful when we addressed them.

The room had no chairs and barely any space for our luggage and other items. The floor was crooked, so while we slept, we constantly gravitated towards the lower side of the double-bed. The bathroom was small and functional (shower & lavatory), but had no space for towels or clothes. Also, the radiator made a lot of noise, and otherwise didn't really work. Be careful with what you let them photocopy while checking in (passports, credit cards etc.), and pay attention to your credit card usages. Our card was unfortunately misused.

At the end of the day when your in New York for shopping you are less likely to be sitting in your room. If you pay cheap money it is what it is. Saying that why pay more to be greeted by miserable staff. Marrakech has such lovely, welcoming and very helpful staff. Me and my fiancé wanted to explore the real New York so they gave us some advice on Harlem and the Bronx. The rooms are very clean and the hotel is extremely convenient above starbucks next to subway and bagel shop just on the next block.
Thank you to all the staff. See you again soon!

So first thing I would say is that a lot of what other people have written is pretty accurate. Our room was small, the internet was poor and was only available in the lobby/bar area, that we affectionately dubbed the night club (the music was a little louder than expected but really not intrusive).

However, for us it was perfect it was pretty much the cheapest hotel we could find in the city. It was also right on the the subway as in it was meters from the door of the hotel. It was clean and tidy and the staff were very nice. Ultimately we were there to see New York and so long as we had clean sheets and a place to sleep we were happy. If you are looking for a hotel with loads of facilities look elsewhere but if you are looking for a cheap well situated hotel in Manhattan then it is perfect.

Room Tip: I would recommend trying to get a room away from the lobby as the place is small and the lobby is mo...

We arrived with no preconceptions and were disappointed by our first impressions - a street level door opening to a dark, shabbily carpeted stairwell. My nephew's room was fine but mine was swelteringly hot with no way of turning the heating off. I couldn't believe the room was actually "superior" as there was only about a foot of space around the bed - with no wardrobe or drawers to unpack into. I requested a move and got a much nicer room. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the standard of housekeeping was high - immaculate new bathrooms, bedding and towels. There is no restaurant at all but there is a Starbucks next door and a fantastic diner very close for breakfast. Having tea/coffee making in the rooms or lobby would make a difference when you have jet-lag and are awake before opening hours. The position was good - just far enough north to be quieter but still very convenient with a metro stop less than 100 yards away.

Room Tip: Avoid room 72 like the plague. 126 was nice and on the same floor as the lobby. 84 was nice but on f...

location is ideal - not too noisy area, close to central park.
starbucks in the same building and subway a few steps away.
staff is very friendly and helpful!

noisy, due to thin walls. employees always comunicated loudly in the hallways.

bathroom was dirty and trash from previous guests was still on the floor and has not been cleaned throughout the whole week. no hot water on one day. shower curtain smelled moldy.

sheets were dirty and ripped. no closet, only one tiny rack with two hangers.

wifi in the lobby was very slow or not available.

good photographer for marketing pictures!

Room Tip: away from stairs
