“Good Value but needs a bigger common room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 2, 2013

Rooms are very good with beds made every day and also new towels provided every day. The removal of old towels though does not seem to happen. The rooms are very cramped. There is just enough room for a double bunk and a walkway. It is not possible fop two people to be in the room packing or repacking. The only time they can really be is when sleeping. That is OK but the lounge is very, very small so there is limited places for people to gather. As a result the lobby overflows. The laundry us expensive but to their credit they provide a little lounge to watch TV etc. The WiFi was hard to connect to. They are secure rooms with good door security. Overall it is good for what you pay in New York. Bathrooms were very clean. In our room we had a tv that jutted out from the wall. Its stand had a very sharp edge at head height which could cause some damage.

I had booked another Hostel on the upper westside and it let me down completely... they had some leak so they said there were no rooms available anymore... The only upside was that the owner booked us at Vanderbilt! Its really a very great hostel, there are a lot of young people walking around and a gym you can use. I hardly used a taxi , I walked almost everywhere! The showers were never a problem when I was there... There aren't many but I only had to wait once.

Room Tip: I had a room with a bunk bed it was very small but I was hardly in there (just to sleep) so its enou...

When I arrived, they provided an apartment on third floor with bad lock, hosting the third day I was stuck inside because of the bad lock and had to jump out the window. They provided me a better room, but did not offset the embarrassment.

The rooms are very simple, but the location is worth it! Just a few blocks outside grand central. There's only one restroom per floor... That's not a problem, unless you're facing a school trip in your floor!

My daughter and I have just stayed here for 6 nights. There was an initial mix up about our booking, but the wonderful Denise and her colleagues quickly sorted this out (much to my relief!)
The desk staff and security were all pleasant and helpful throughout our stay.
The location is brilliant, it's a ten minute walk to Grand Central Station/Rockerfellar, and 15 minutes to Times Square/Empire State Building.
The area is safe and there are lots of shops. The Comfort Diner is two blocks away and well worth a try if you want an old fashioned diner experience with great food.
You have to show your room key to gain access to the lifts to the rooms and no visitors are allowed up to the rooms.
The rooms and showers/toilets were very clean, and the beds were comfortable ... Much needed after long days exploring the city.
Would I stay again ... Absolutely! I will be recommending it to friends as a cheap, safe place to stay in NYC
I didn't use the gym/pool but they looked well equipped and clean

Room Tip: We had wifi on the 3rd floor.

There are pros and cons to staying here. People asked me "do you recommend it" and i have to say i have mixed feelings. I am in my fifties and extremely unspoiled so it worked for me. I am not sure it's for everyone. for me - it was a bed to sleep in after sightseeing all day. the front desk people were amazingly nice and friendly and helpful. the security people were also very nice and seem to be doing their job perfectly.

there is a gym, pool, sauna and steam room that you can use while you are a guest. I used the pool.

On the PRO side:
*location is excellent. you are within walking distance to many tourist attractions, as well as great public transportation and great restaurants and pubs.
*it's extremely inexpensive - and ther are no added taxes as you get in other hotels. so the price quoted is the price you will pay.
*it's clean and functional
*price includes an amazing gym and a very nice, albeit small, swimming pool, there is a small kitchen for guests use, the rooms have a small fridge and tv. there is also a small desk and chair, and small hanging gadget. the bed has drawers underneath for storage.
*I was not interested in the "social" aspect of the place, but there is a lounge on each floor and i did see guests hanging out there.
*there is a laundry room - it costs money to use (I think it was $1.75per load) and there are machines that sell detergent. when i was using it, nobody else was there. not sure if it's ever crowded.

On the CON side:
*it's functional - not pretty, not "inviting", but very simple.
*rooms do not have en suite bathrooms/showers and you have to use the ones down the hall or in the gym. i was there for two nights and NEVER had to wait but then again i get up at crazy hours so i have no idea what it's like during busy times. I preferred using the shower in the gym even though it means going downstairs, because it was less crowded, it had great mirrors and some hair dryers.
*the bedroom is tiny (even taking into account NYC standards). There is *one* light overhead and the switch is not close to the bed so you have to get out of bed to switch it off. there is no reading lamp.
*the TV screen is also small and mounted on a wall so it's a tad hard to see.
*there is no night table (but the bed had drawers under it for storage so i used that as my night table).
*there is no food (except vending machines) and no coffee in the hotel. there is a small restaurant accross the street and loads of coffee shops down the block (on second or third ave).

Even with the cons, I think it's a good place to stay.

The place is in mid town which is conveniate since you can go to up/down town easily. It is also close to central metro station in 42 St. They do not provide any meal but it is not problem since there are lots of fast food and restaurant around in a walking distance. The place is close to 5 Ave. for the people who love to shop.
