“Love the Artwork”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

I was apprehensive about staying here, for it appeared to be very different from all my prior hotel experiences. My daughter and I decided to give it a go since we only planned a 4 day stay. The hotel is so unique and colorful and truly a one of a kind hotel. We were hoping for something on the first or second floor, but ended up on the 4 th floor, which was a bit of a challenge dragging our heavy suitcases up a narrow staircase 4 flights up, that was the only downside for us. Our room artwork was beautiful, it looked like Australian aboriginal art and the 4th floor egyptian hall art is spectacular. My favorite art was the Banksy stairwell, wow!!! Sharing a bathroom was not a problem at all, never encountered it occupied, and the bathrooms are clean. The beds in our room were just fine and the air conditioner kicked out the cold temps. The staff at the Carlton Arms are extremely friendly and engaging. The street directly in front of the hotel is blocked off , there is a college right next door and there are tables with umbrellas on the street, that was a pleasant surprise. I look forward to returning to the Carlton Arms next time I travel to NY, the price is the best around and the experience is one to fondly remember.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel in early May 2013. We saw that it had very mixed reviews, but were just going to be in town for a few nights and wanted something in this general area, and didn't want to spend a lot. We did get a room with a private bath. The hotel was older, but it was clean. The manager was very friendly and helpful. As many of the reviews stated, he gave us three rooms to choose from. We chose a room located on the same floor and in close proximity to the office. For that reason, we did hear some noise in the evenings as people came and went, but it usually quieted down by 10:30.

The location of the hotel was fantastic. Apparently just several months ago they closed the street off in front of the hotel to vehicle traffic and made it a pedestrian walk area, so that cut down on car noise. There is a bagel-deli right across the street and a street vendor cart that we got meals from, Madison Park is only a couple blocks away, as is the subway station.

For price and location, it was great. There are no elevators, through, so if you have a problem with stairs, take that into account. I had forgotten in earlier reviews it mentioned that they do not provide washclothes, just towels (and plenty of those). It's nothing fancy, but we were out early in the morning and didn't usually get back until late at night, so didn't miss having a TV. Does have free wifi. Will stay there again.

This hotel is in my opinion rather a hostel than a hotel. It has shared bathrooms and toilets on the floors. The rooms are all uniquely designed by different artist and every floor has its own "theme".

We have a very indian like room, pretty colorful and with Shiva and Ganesh and other indian gods painted. Our little daughter (1 year old), really likes the colorful room.

The room is kinda small, but it has two beds in it. One we sleep in and the other we use to store our daily needed stuff on.

The baby sleeps in its own grip, which we brought over from Germany.

Every thing else is available in the hotel, and if not, the staff is very helpful and tries to find a solution to our "problems"

The location is awesome, just around the corner of Madison Square Garden, and all things needed around the corner.

The price is for NYC pretty amazing.

If you are not the type of person, which loves luxurious bedrooms, who will definitely love the Carlton Arms, a special kind of ho(s)tel :)

Myself and my best friend were walking around New York City looking for a hotel for the night, as we had no where to Stay. Walking for a couple of hours we strolled past this hotel. Walking up the stairs to the hotel we could already see that this hotel was bizarre but is totally different to any hotel we stayed in before.
The staff said they were able to accommodate us for two nights, which we jumped at the chance as it was cheap. We were given a room, with dollar bills and partly naked yellow women painted on the walls. The bed wasn't amazing but you cant expect much from a hotel like this. The room we were in, we had to share a bathroom but we didn't mind that, as it was clean.
The place had such a friendly atmosphere and my aim is to go to New York every couple of years and i will always stay in this hotel. It offers such a great location for the price it is.

No elevator, no AC, narrow hallways, small rooms BUT great fun. Every room created by an individual artist, ours by Francisco Franciscus, hallways, ceilings likewise. Very helpful staff, clean and prices like non-New York!

My rating above is on the basis of standard metrics. I would definitely go there again, though my wife might not do so.

Room Tip: web site has gallery of the rooms. Choose art work you can sleep with.

I chose the place for the location over anything in this skyrocketting hotel prices, which I believe insane, even though I had a place to stay somewhere else in the city.

I see other people's bad experiences, however, I think the quality is fair for the price they charge. As long as one understands economics of this capitalist city, the room should look fine.

I used here only for sleep nothing else and for this purpose I rate the hotel average. It can be better if they can provide warmer shower. One of them could not get hot water on the 4th floor.
