“Thursday Night Treasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We were looking for something fun to do on our last night in New York. What a great find this place was! We were fortunate to get a seating for a show by Gregory Generet. He is their "artist in residence" every Thursday night until late October 2012. What an amazing voice and a great show. The restaurant is on the intimate side and the stage seemed tiny. I was worried that the music would overwhelm the small space and be too loud to enjoy dinner. This was definitely not the case. It was perfect. The server took our order before the music started and was attentive. Food was excellent. Nice wine/bar selections. They offer a prix-fixe dinner for $29.95 Sun-Thurs. We enjoyed appetizers of Smokin' Shrimp and Watermelon, Pulled Pork Sliders and a fabulous Tomato and Mozzarella Salad. For entrees we got the Cedar Plank Steak and a seafood pasta. Smoke uses organic and locally grown ingredients and the freshness was evident in everything we ate, particularly the salad. The dessert selection was also great. Everything was served promptly and was so delicious It was so nice to be in a restaurant that was full but we didn't feel like we were being rushed so that they could fill our table. During the show, the servers were swinging to the beat in the back: obviously loving being there. The atmosphere was perfect: jazz, romance, intimacy. Once the set was over, the servers brought out bills. I figured this meant that with everyone getting a bill at once, it would be mayhem trying to get our bill paid and leave, but it was fast and efficient. After the set, Mr. Generet went around the restaurant greeting every patron warmly and thanking them for coming. It was an unforgettable evening. I would highly recommend this spot for a romantic evening in New York City.

“Good jazz”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 21, 2012

The music is always going to be very good here, albeit very safe and straight-ahead, rarely challenging. This makes it a good spot for tourists who want to visit a jazz club when in NYC. Given that, and also that this is sort of the only club in the neighborhood, the way they treat patrons is maybe a little below average. The food is average for NYC jazz clubs, the food prices are average for NYC jazz clubs, and the cover charges are average/appropriate. They are the Jazz Club With the Most Rules of any club in town: Reservations must be made twice (made and then confirmed), no shared plates allowed, no separate checks, only one credit card per check, dinner must be eaten at the first set, tips are added for parties of five or more (and the tip is 20%, and on the food, tax, AND cover, when it should be only on food & beverage). But if you know this going in, you'll enjoy what is on most nights some of New York's finest local talent. Smoke has one of the best "quiet" policies of all the clubs in NY; another rule, I guess, but a very important one if you wish to hear the music. Also know that this club is not in Harlem, though their website suggests it might be...

“Delightful time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 20, 2012

My daughter (18) and I went for dinner and a show on a quiet Sunday night. When I say quiet, I only refer to the outside, because inside this place was jumping! The SaRon Crenshaw Band was outstanding. Great music, very friendly staff and enjoyable food. Of course, the music varies from night to night, but we will be sure to come back again.

FYI, under 21 people can dine and watch the show - they just can't be in the bar area. I think this would be an excellent way to introduce any young, well-behaved young person to live jazz/blues in a small, intimate environment.

“Jazz on the UWS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 17, 2012

I was just here last night and had a fantastic time. There is a minimum of $20, but no cover charge Sun-Thu. The Prix Fixe menu is well worth the $29, so the minimum really isn't a problem. Huge servings of absolutely wonderful food. I had a glass of the Pinot Grigio, the calamari, and a salmon entry. Everything was delicious. The staff is very nice and accommodating. The music is top-notch. The entire audience was grooving.

“Hot jazz and tasty food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2012

We visited Smoke on Wed evening for the Matt Cohen Quartet, which was excellent. The club offers table seating with excellent views of the stage as well as a bar with stools. The restaurant has a $29.95 prix fixe supper with choice of appetizer and entree, and the citrus chicken took the prize at our table.
