“Interesting and insightful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2014

If your relatives came through Ellis Island you can get a feel for what it was like for them when they came to America, even if they did not stay in NYC. You got a real feel for the families whose stories you heard and apartments you visited. Our tour guide was very informative and interesting. She had a true enthusiasm for the subject matter.
One friend said she was surprised how much she enjoyed the museum. It is definitely worth it.

“Highly recommend”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014 via mobile

I highly recommend visiting the tenement museum and taking one of the tours. There are many different tours to choose from. We saw an hour long tour called "hard times". The tour guide and other museum staff were very knowledgeable. The tour was very interesting and if we had more time we would have taken more of them.

“A must do in NYC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014 via mobile

We did the Irish Outsiders tour with Carmen who was an excellent guide. This museum is so important to NY's history that I think it is a must see. Book your tour online a few days in advance because they do sell out and arrive early so you can view a very informative 30 min video prior to your tour.

“Hidden Gem in NYC, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 18, 2014

I heard about this place from a friend and despite having been to NYC many times, i had never before heard of it. Booked to go on the Food Tasting event as seemed like a great way to explore and learn more about NYC, history and food. The museum is a great hidden gem - the tours they organise are quirky and interesting. Just the right length of time and the "educators' are all very friendly, approachable, fun and knowledgeable. However - my tour left me disapointed. While the brief museum visit was great, i expected a LOT more rom the food part of the tour. maybe i didnt read well the description, but i thoguht we would tour a few places within the area by foot. Not the case, which is fine. We went to a special room where through slides and video we learned more about the evolution of food in the area. The majorly disappointing bit was the tinky tiny crumbs of food offered as a taster. they were served on brown paper small plates and the amounts were literally suitable to feed a bird. For the price of the ticket - i found this unacceptable and that is what ruined my experience. I wish i could wholeheartedly can recommend the tour to friends - but I am not sure i will, unless I specifically warn them not to expect too much on the food side, which really defeats the point of the tour....

“a visit through history”

excellent presentation about the history of the shopkeepers (we did Shopkeepers tour). Old photo's, artifacts and history re-lived. Interactive and interesting.
