“Good Value in Great Neighborhood for Unpretentious Travelers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2009

Stayed at Wyndham Garden Inn Chelsea seven nights, from December 23 to December 30, 2009. Most all hotels in Manhattan considered the last few nights of our stay as part of the high priced New Years Eve week. We were getting decent rates for the first 3 or 4 nights, but the last few nights tripled! We ended up calling hotels directly to ask for a lower price for those nights since we would be staying so long. Wyndham Garden Inn Chelsea was the only hotel that would adjust their prices. So we paid $149 for the first six nights and $229 for the last night, before taxes of about $20 a night.
We paid about $40 for a taxi from LGA. The hotel is on 24th Street halfway between 5th and 6th Streets (a little closer to 6th), just one block over from the major cross-street in Chelsea, 23rd Street. There are subway stations all along 23rd street. The closest to the hotel is the FV station at 6th Avenue, but the 1, RW, 6 and CE stations aren’t far within ¼ mile.
The location of the hotel is its best feature. There is quick access to all parts of the city. But Chelsea/Flat Iron is full of interesting shops and incredible restaurants. We walked to all of these restaurants… we had breakfast at Murray’s Bagel (on 8th Avenue south of 23rd Street), had the best BBQ brisket ever at RUB (on 23rd Street between 7th and 8th Avenue), had an excellent European brunch at Markt, enjoyed incredible soup at Pipa’s inside the ABC Carpet Shop on Broadway, indulged in old fashioned diner-style meals at the Lyric Diner on 3rd Avenue, and even sipped shakes at Burger Shack in the Madison Square Park. The area has really fun for people watching.
The hotel is obviously newly re-constructed. All the materials and fixtures are new. There is essentially no lobby. The doors open right at the front desk. There is a sofa and a couple ottomans but it’s not a spot you would spend time. A ticket desk/concierge is squeezed into a corner. The restaurant is supposed to be a part of the hotel, but it didn’t really seem that way. We never ate there.
Room 903 is steps from the elevator and faces the front of the building. The small room was adequate for two people who travel well together but don’t think of sharing a room with someone who get’s on your nerves. It has a desk and chair, big flat screen TV on the wall, arm chair, two nightstands, a luggage rack and a closet equipped with an iron/board. There is no dresser. The king sized bed has a good quality mattress topped with a comfy feather bed. The sheets are good quality (probably 350-threadcount). The duvet and comforter are nice and cozy. The pillows are decent foam. The heating system was a little quirky; it made a lot of noise whenever it kicked on. But we got used to it and slept through the repeated ruckus.
The bathroom is well equipped with a good-sized shower, decent towels, enough counter space and True Blue Spa soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion. The water pressure and temperature were good. Except one morning there was no hot water. By the time we went down to the lobby, the repair truck was already parked in front of the hotel and they were repairing the frozen boiler. We had plenty of hot water when we returned that afternoon.
Our room was cleaned completely and promptly when we’d leave in the morning. Although no one knocked when we had the do not disturb sign on the door, the cleaning crew was very noisy. Two of them even got into a screaming match about who wasn’t working fast enough! But everyone on the staff was very friendly to the guests.
The hotel worked for us because we don’t need a fancy lobby, an onsite restaurant or other services. It was a good value for the price compared to other hotels in Manhattan. It is in an area that we like and has good access to public transportation. If you travel like we do, you’ll like this hotel.

The hotel staff is excellent and so is the concieragee.Got some valuable tips from the concierage that helped us in our sightseeing. But the hotel by itself is very small. Extremely small lobby, no business center, fitness room is a joke and the rooms are small as well. Nothing anyone can do about it but works out well as long as you are aware of this fact. THe fitness room s on the lower level and the room had a dirty musky smell 2 it. It had 1 treadmill and 2 ellipticals very close to each other. THey have complimentary internet wireless but alas hadn't taken my laptop.

Thank you for your recent stay with the Wyndham Garden Chelsea and for taking advantage of our prime location. I am saddened to hear your experience was not up to par as we strive for ultimate guest satisfaction. Our guest rooms are approximately 220 square feet, which are quite similar in size to hotels in our star rating. We do offer upgraded suites based upon availability.

There are a multitude of options we provide our guests with in regards to traveling to the airport. Taxi, subway, bus, and private car choices are all available at differing price points. Our service team is always present to make a recommendation based upon budget and time constraints.

We hope to welcome you again during your next visit to Manhattan.

The hotel was clean and in a great location. Rooms were small but comfortable and free wireless was a great benefit. Our first room was extremely loud and the staff were more than happy to move us to a much quieter room which was much appreciated. House cleaning however was very loud in the morning and failed to remove unwanted rubbish from our room. As there were no printers, so when we asked a staff member to print some tickets for us she was rather rude about it. I don't know why as she was standing there doing nothing anyway.
Overall the stay was ok. As my title says, it wasn't outstanding, but it wasn't terrible.

Nothing fancy, but serviceable and clean. Bed was good. Bathroom was nicely decorated, good shower. I wouldn't really call this in Chelsea, which is a few blocks west and south.

Initially we thought we had booked the times square wyndham hotel which was going to be our preference, but due to a mistake on our part we had infact booked a deluxe double room at the chelsea west hotel. After reading some of the reviews I was a little worried as to how much our mistake would cost us. The double room which we had booked would have been fine for our stay, but as we were there for 6 nights we tried our luck on an upgrade, the hotel staff were very professional and polite (through out or stay) and we were lucky enough to get upgraded to a king size room. same overall room size as a double just with a bigger and more comfortable bed. The room was of an OK size, clean and very comfortable. Not having a bath didn't bother us, the shower was good and the water always hot. It seemed that our towels were always fresh even after hanging them up to use again. Having a starbucks round the corner was a bonus as there wasn't much in the way of snacks available in the hotel itself, although there is a small counter next to the front desk. The free wi-fi was also a very handy benefit and really easy to get logged in. On our last day and the fact that our flight was late in the evening, the hotel staff were more than willing to look after our luggage whilst we went and explored the flatiron district a bit more.

We only ate at the San Rocco restaurant once on our last night, which was a shame as the food there was the best we had had during our trip, definately worth a visit. Reasonably priced and very welcoming and friendly staff.

Overall the Wyndham Garden Hotel at Chelsea West is definately worth a stay. As so many other reviews have said, if your using the hotel as simply a place to lay your head then this hotel is definately a good option.

I am so glad you enjoyed your stay at our hotel. December is a very busy month in the city and I greatly appreciate the feedback.

We do offer upgrades based upon availability. I am pleased to hear you were able to experience our premium balcony king.

San Rocco is our trendy Italian restaurant that opened in August. It is great to hear that you enjoyed your dining experience.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the Wyndham Chelsea. Please do not hesitate to contact me directly for assistance with future bookings.

I booked this hotel partly due to the good reviews it had and I can say I wasn't disappointed! The ladies on reception were both very friendly and helpful and made me feel very welcome. I had a King Size bed and my room was fairly small but very clean. Bed was super comfortable although the pillows were a little high for me (I like them to 'squish' right down when laying on them!).
The bathroom was lovely, unusual to find I didn't have a bathtub though, just the shower. Very clean and although I put up my towels to reuse the following day they gave me new ones. The coffee maker didn't work so I asked them to have a look which didn't happen but to be honest I wasn't bothered really.
I didn't use the shampoo and conditioner as always use my own but the body lotion they supplied was lovely!
Location wise was fab. Just 1 block to the F/V trains. I walked to Macy's which is only 10 blocks away (fairly small blocks) and then you have Union Square (14th St) in the opposite direction.
There wasn't really anything negative except for I had to wait quite a while to collect my luggage as the guy had popped out and the receptionists were too busy to get it from me.
All in all a great hotel in an excellent location and will definitely stay there again!

The room was small but quiet and the bed comfortable. But really, do you travel to New York to spend your time in the hotel? I found the staff to be not only friendly but competent and helpful. Anything that I needed was promply available upon request. The location was convenient to both bus and subway lines.

The San Rocco Restaurant and Bar staff were very friendly. Although I did not have dinner there, I did enjoy the small but quite good happy hour aperitivo selection.
