“Fantastic location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 26, 2013 via mobile

Wow this hotel was a find. Just 2 blocks from the Times Square district it was close to everything. Just 1 block and you had the Port Authority bus terminal which also had the subway connection. Tourist buses ( hop on hop off ) ran from 8th Street just 450m from the hotel.
The staff were friendly and eager to help you with anything. Thanks to Sam at the front desk who spent more than half an hour chasing a tour operator for us. The room size was fine for New York, the bed was so comfortable it helped after a long day pounding the streets site seeing. The room was clean and the air conditioning worked well. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone that wants value for money and great location.

My friend and I just stayed at Candlewood for a few days. The room was very clean and was a decent size for New York City. It would be a great place for someone needing an extended stay with the equipped kitchenette and the free laundry room. They only have weekly maid service, but you can request clean towels and linens if needed. The bed was very comfortable, even for a queen-size. The staff was very helpful and friendly, always service with a smile and asking if there was any other way they could help. I accidentally broke the hotel's hair dryer, but they told me it was no problem. The location is kind of on a desolate street in the fashion district, but that makes it a little quieter. Times Square and the subway station are only a few blocks away, so it is relatively easy to get where you need to go from there. The bathroom was a little small, and there was only one mirror, which made it a little hard for two people to get ready at the same time. But, overall, I would recommend this hotel to friends.

We chose this hotel because it has one of the best prices in Manhattan.

Upon first arriving we had a rather discouraging experience. We arrived before check-in, so we left our bags with the hotel for safe keeping until our return. The problem was that all the bags were being kept in the lobby by the check-in desk and right by the front door. There was no security personnel and only one person working the front desk at the time. This seemed quite unsafe to me since anyone could have gone up and grabbed a bag and left without anyone noticing it. Upon return our bags were there though, along with about 40 others, again with nobody watching them. I really think the hotel should consider storing them elsewhere for safety sake!

Our room was very nice and clean. The beds were very comfortable and the sheets were clean (aside from a couple tiny little stains). Everything in the room looks quite new and recently renovated. It should be noted that dishes are scare, so if you plan on making a meal you may have trouble finding enough dishes and utensils to help you along. There were only two or three plates bowls and pairs of utensils. I was disappointed to find that there was no dish cloth or drying cloth.

We never realized this until we arrived, but housekeeping is only done once a week. You can request new towels whenever you like though.

Two days after being there we realized our fridge broke and most of our food spoiled (not very much in there though). Within about an hour a new fridge arrived and we were happy... except that it took about three days to actually START getting cold. In fact we had to use the freezer as the fridge until it started freezing items. By the time we left after day seven the fridge was barely cold but the freezer worked. Of note, there is no ice maker in the hotel but all the freezers have an ice maker in it. Unfortunately the ice maker in our fridge never did work, in fact the water never even filled the tray. It also takes about 48 hours for these trays to freeze and you don't get many ice cubes out of it anyway.

The remainder of our stay was fine and we enjoyed the free cookies they had at the front. I was disappointed that the complementary news paper is only available for premium members.

Of note:
-The bathroom could benefit from an extra towel rack so you can dry towels. The only rack is actually in the shower itself. This made it difficult for two people to shower while drying a towel at the same time. As well, any towels we used at the sink had to be stored on the ground level shelf under the sink since there was nowhere to hang them.
-When we were there one of the elevators didn't work and it took up to 5 minutes or more just to wait for an elevator to arrive at your floor. Even with two of them working it was still quicker to go down the stairs then to wait.
-The gym is simple but has what you should need while staying there.
-The hotel description says that there is a "business centre" with free Internet and computer use. What they don't tell you is that the free internet and computer is actually a kiosk computer in the lobby right in front of the door. The computer was pretty much useless as the internet was horribly slow and the browser was clumsy and unresponsive most of the time. To be honest, it was completely useless. I'd recommend bringing a laptop or tablet instead.
-The kitchen sink in our room was almost useless. It ran terribly slow and took forever to fill with water. In addition, the water was almost always cold no longer how long we ran the hot water. This made cleaning dishes difficult (and impossible for eggs!!). We had to transfer hot water from the shower to the sink just to wash dishes.

Bottom line:
For the price it got the job done despite some serious inconveniences. Even though I understand that once a week housekeeping is designed to protect your privacy (and I assume lower costs) I would totally be willing to pay a little more for more frequent housekeeping. The hotel is in a good part of the city and is only about a 10 minute walk to Time Square and is right by Penn Station, so you have plenty of options to get around NY from there. There are some very good restaurants in the vicinity as well that you can choose from.

I understand that the broken fridge situation was probably specific to just us so with that in mind I won't dock them in my rating.

Green Features: Housekeeping is done once a week, so you're encouraged to reuse towels and sheets, which I like.

We are returning guests to your Candlewood Suites. We enjoy the location and amenities, as well as the helpfulness of staff.

Thank you especially to Allyson, Kathy, and Monica for their constant friendless and for helping us when asked. They certainly did what they said they would and very promptly. Firm pillows, change of towels, and refilling the coffee dispenser are just a few examples.

Thank you also to Ian for being so helpful in storing our many bags and retrieving them promptly when we asked.

There are a few items that could use attention. The gym Diamondback aerobic exerciser makes a lot of squeaking sounds when used (it starts out ok, but gets pretty bad). The “store” ran out of laundry detergent but had plenty of dryer sheets. Three was no regular coffee at check-in and days later we were un-able to get any. As you can see from above the coffee dispenser ran out of coffee but was re-filled quickly.

We continue to tell friends about your Candlewood Suites and look forward to next year’s stay.

Nice, clean hotel near Times Square and a good deal for the price. Wonderful kitchen facilities in the room, however, only one bed. Says it can sleep four, but you have to bring your own blow up bed, which we did. A little bit of an inconvenience, but the hotel was worth it.

Room Tip: We stayed on the 4th floor and faced 39th Street. I was in the garment district with very interesti...

Green Features: These rooms are not cleaned everyday, which was fine with us. We just got clean towels once during our stay. Did not need clean ones everyday. Save the environment.

This is a hotel designed for longer term stays. Our room had a full sized refrigerator, full sized microwave and a stove top - perfect if you want to prepare some of your own meals. The bed was very good and the rooms (4 to a level) were a decent size. The location is really good. It is close to all types of transportation - very easy to get where you wanted to go. And the staff was great - they were really well trained and very amenable to helping you with whatever. We will go back and we will recommend this hotel. And.... it's a great area for restaurants and access to Times Square. We very much enjoyed our stay.

The location was perfect. About a 10 mine walk to all the hustle and bustle of Times Sq and Broadway. Staff were friendly. We were able to use their facilities such as the washing machines for no extra cost. Stay here if you want to explore New York without having to break the bank.
