We had a light lunch at Cafe Angelique on a busy weekend afternoon recently, and it was truly one of the worst restaurant meals we've ever had--and certainly the worst meal we've ever had in NYC. Limp, aged, grilled chicken salad with greasy grilled chicken (and it's hard to make grilled chicken greasy unless you're pretty incompetent), and a roast beef sandwich that, despite our waitress' energetic recommendation, came with damp, greasy and apparently pre-packaged meat, carmelized onions that wouldn't have been out of place at White Castle, and no trace of the horseradish that was allegedly part of the sandwich. When we questioned the quality, our waitress cheerfully admitted that the food had been prepared hours earlier (so don't come here for freshness), but did not offer an alternative from the menu. Excellent coffee, I will admit, though the no-refills policy makes it pricey, and the pastries looked good--but that's not what we were there for. Very much a W. Village atmosphere: hip, busy, small, cramped.
