After reading various reviews online, I thought I was booking at a different hotel in Carlsbad. I also realized that this part of New Mexico doesn't seem to have many choices in decent hotels, and didn't have high expectations to begin with. The night of our arrival, we found out the mistake and figured, "how bad could it be for one night!" The moment we (my husband, myself and our 4 kids) walked in the door the kids started to complain about the smell. We told them to start to get ready for bed. We had booked two connecting rooms. Our 15 year old came to us and said there were ants on the night stand. My husband checked it out and said there was something sticky that was attracting them. Moments later our 16 year old came and asked about a stain on the sheets. The two kids sharing that bed decided to sleep without that sheet. I didn't make the kids shower because the tubs were disgusting. My husband did some investigating around the rooms and said he was going to the office to ask for different rooms. They showed him another set of rooms, not connecting. They weren't AS dirty, but I wasn't comfortable without the connecting door. Out of character, my husband wanted to find another hotel, even if it meant driving to Roswell. So we went to the car to consult our GPS. I called a known chain in Roswell, explained our situation, and found a great deal of help from the night receptionist there. She was from Carlsbad, asked which hotel we were in, and then explained the awful reputation this place has. They didn't have any rooms for us but was most helpful with phone numbers. We lined up a place and my husband was willing to pay for BOTH hotels if need be (SO very unusual for him!) He went back to the hotel office and told them we would like to leave without being charged. The young man at the desk said OK, but an older man suggested to show us more rooms. My husband said one more, because he wasn't looking at rooms all night. The next set of rooms was no better...the bedside lamp wouldn't work and there was still food under the beds. At this point they finally agreed to let us leave without being charged. I have never seen my kids move so fast to get out of somewhere! Since we were looking at 1.5 hour drive to Roswell, I used the bathroom. The toilet wouldn't flush! After we finally get on the road at 11 pm, I asked my husband what was so awful that he couldn't deal with it for one night--I knew he had to be keeping something from me. Well, here's the real push to get us out...besides food, empty bottles/cups, etc. there was DOG POOP, several days old, under one of the beds!! Clearly the housekeeping staff was NOT doing there job and no one is following up on their work. We ended up staying at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Roswell for about the same price with breakfast included!! And the cleaning standards were far superior! The 6 of us agreed that we would have rather slept in the car or outside than stay in the Great Western Inn!
