All hotels in Carlsbad are expensive, and all of those for under $200 a night get bad reviews. If you're smart, you'll visit the caves in the late afternoon, have dinner, return to the caves to the see the bats and then drive up to Artesia for the night - where hotels are much cheaper. This will also save you from deciding to drive through El Paso to go to your next stop - as doing so will mean having to pass through an "immigration stop", which is a major hassle.
But I digress. We didn't make those choices, so we had to stay in Carlsbad for the night and the Days Inn seem to be the best of a bunch of bad choices. For about $150 a night you get a nicely sized typical motel room with two full-size beds (not queens), a small table, TV, luggage area, and very cramped bathroom. There's also a small fridge and coffeemaker.
The beds were comfy enough though the pillows were very lumpy. It's been a long, long time since I've encountered lumpy pillows, so I'm not even sure if they were lumpy on purpose. Still, they weren't too bad, but I'm not too demanding pillow-wise. The room did get very cold at night, but I can only fault myself for not turning down the AC (which was really loud anyway). Other than that, it was a standard motel experience.
Probably the worst part of the stay were what passed for bath towels at these hotels. They were barely larger than hand towels (even my tiny 8-yo complained they were too small) and pretty thin. The hotel also only provided one tiny bottle of shampoo and conditioner - at best they'd be enough for four people, not the four of us. And given that we'd visited White Sands earlier on the day, we all needed those showers! Water pressure, fortunately, was good.
Breakfast the next day was fine, your typical nicer motel breakfast. This means that in addition to boxed cereal, yogurt and danishes, they had fresh fruit, make-your-own-waffles and toasters for bread and bagels. As someone else said, the little muffins were pretty good.
I didn't find the paper someone mentioned below threatening to put a lien on our house if we left the room dirty, but I guess I'll keep a close eye on our credit card bill.
