“Beware”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2010

An adequate hotel, near 2 national parks. Good food service.
BUT
It is a sprawling campus of single and 2 storey buildings. We were put in the 400 block, 2 stories. On Saturday night, a 15 passenger vanload of oil field bravos was delivered to the rooms above us. They began to drink, smoke, flick butts and bottle caps in all directions (mainly downward, of course, towards our vehicle).
We engaged management in a free and frank exchange of opinion.
"We always put them there"
"I (the speaker an almost beardless youth) go around to check every now and again"
They refused to pay for a room for us at the Holiday Inn, so we compromised by moving to another room, well away from the 400 block and give him credit he says we will not have to pay for the 4th nite.

For the previous 2 weeks we had been almost exclusively staying at Best Western. Why a "good customer" was put into a section where the chair upholstery was filthy, where it took two flushes to clear the toilet , & they knew this area was regularly given to rowdy's I don't know!!!!!. The room they gave us for the last 12 hours of our 4 day visit is clean,modernized....why didn't we get that one to begin with!!!

I called to make reservation and man acted like he was doing me a favor. Our connection was bad and I told him I would call back. I did and got a hold of another staff person who was very resourceful and helpful. She told me there were rooms available on 1st floor and near the main entrance. She set me up and when I got to the hotel, no problems checking in and getting parking right in front of my room. Rooms need sprucing up some, seems like they could get the rooms painted and a little cleaner. The beds did not smell like fresh sheets, but they were clean. Floor in bathroom was dirty tile. Noise level when sleeping was somewhat loud but a lot of folks had come in after I checked in. I did drift off to sleep and had no problems with the sleeping. When checking in around 3:30 -4pm, asked if their restaurant was open for early dinner, they said it was. We were seated but it took around a half-hour to get our order in, the staff seemed to be setting up the dining room for the dinner hour. The food was great, had great chicken fajitas with a free great magarita. As people came in the restaurant, most of them wanted my plate of food. When I needed ice and couldn't find the ice machine and went into the lobby for ice, the waitress from the restaurant was pleasant I got me some. Breakfast was a continental and nothing special.

After reading reviews of hotels in Carlsbad & Carlsbad Caverns area, I wasn't sure what we would get because they were so mixed. We decided on the Best Western Stevens Inn since it was one with the least favorable reviews! What a very pleasant surprise! It is an older hotel, but our room was larger than most hotels, everything worked (we did have to have them fix the plug on the refrigerator, but they came promptly and had it fixed in no time), it was clean and well appointed, the pool looked inviting although we didn't take time to use it, the fitness room was very good with several workout options, and they serve a full breakfast bar with fruit, biscuits & gravy, toast, bagels, eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, cereal, juice and all of it was delicious.
Staff was friendly and helpful. I don't know why this place didn't get a lot more good reviews.
The town was friendly - if you lke quaint antique shops, be sure to visit "Keepin' Up with the Joneses @ 325 S. Canyon St in Carlsbad. Joy Jones was delightful and suggested sites we might enjoy, and told us a little about the area. Also, if you have free time and want a nice walk, to to the River Walk area on Park St. Nice playground if you have children, and a great walking trail along the river.
We thoroughly enjoyed Carlsbad Caverns (about at 20 minute drive from the hotel). Don't miss the bat flight in the evenings and take one of the tours of the caverns in addition to the Big Room, (which is included in the entry fee). We toured the King's Palace on an hour and a half tour. The park rangers who conduct the tours are great.

what a bad place to stay. if you are looking for a family motel this is not it . it looked like an ok place when we checked in around 5pm we then went up to the caverns . we got back about 10pm and the parking was overflowing with people standing around drinking and there was a couple fighting. well it was late so we found a parking place we had rented three rooms .my daughter and her 1 year old was went on ahead to our room while we were trying to get the luggage. she unlucked the door and there was a nude man on the bed of our room ,he jumped up and scared he she dropped the baby. by that time we were at the room. the poor man did not know what was going on .the motel had rerented out our room .all the lady at the front desk could say was sorry. bad bad place to stay this could have ended up bad but we just left carlsbad altogether.

We stayed here about five years ago on a cold winter's night, and although our room that time was OK, we vowed not to come back because when we registered for our room the hip-hop racket from the adjacent disco was unbearable... and as the evening turned into night the traffic through the parking lot, and the resulting racket, was unpleasant.

This time we figured things must've improved. We checked-in at midnight and the motel's lobby was staffed by a couple guys wearing t-shirts labeled "security", and the dance-club was quiet (I guess the DJ took a break). Soon thereafter, though, we weren't so sure... a guy rolled-in off the highway with hip-hop blaring from the open windows of his SUV, careened into a nearby parking place, and then four guys got out, looking like idiots, walking with a strange gait towards the club. Our room, however, was cool, roomy, and reasonably inviting.

Trying to sleep, however, proved challenging. First, a gaggle of Harley Davidsons made a pass through the parking lot - and then went quiet. We discovered they'd all parked in an open spot to enjoy a beer and some conversation, because twenty minutes later they cranked-up those noisy things, revved them up to admire the racket, and then moved out to the street before accelerating noisily away. The next morning the beer bottles left in the lot told the story. After the Harleys, the hip-hop SUV (or something equally noisy) made another slow tour of the parking lot. The club must've closed about 1:30AM, because it quieted down after that.

The next morning at check-out I commented to the desk clerk (some young kid) that our stay this time was just like the last time - unpleasant because of the noisy party in the parking lot - and all he could say was "Oops." I asked if "Oops" was the best he could do, and his response was "Well, what do you expect us to do about what goes-on in the parking lot?"

I travel through Carlsbad a couple times a year, every year, and from one year to the next it seems like the town is saddled with more than its fair share of all the usual problems that plague small and mid-sized towns in New Mexico and elsewhere in the southwest. The Stevens Inn has been around a long time... expanded and remodeled from time to time (the room we paid $99 for probably went for one-tenth that when new fifty years ago), and the spacious and inviting grounds are pleasant by day. Apparently the real money-maker in the place is the disco, however, (and apparently it's the only place to go, after dark, in Carlsbad) because the motel's management tolerates all the noise and local riff-raff coming and going - at the expense and discomfort to their paying guests. This time, we won't be back. Ever.

In Carlsbad, NM, there are many motels to choose from, but none of them are great. Most are similar to this Best Western, kinda run-down and old. This motel did have big rooms which was nice for a change. We were on a 28 day road trip and this is the only hotel that would not let us check in an hour early......oh well, so we went out for an early dinner. It was really noisy the night we stayed as the motel was hosting a 10 year high school reunion. I would not have stayed here had it not been for the teacher discount rate of $72........pretty good for Carlsbad! But, the Caverns were spectacular and this motel is on the side of town closer to the Caverns, so it was worth it to stay here!

There is a dearth of nice motels around Carlsbad Caverns. This was the best of them with comfortable rooms and a Chili's within walking distance. Breakfast was quite industrial with eggs in a square form as I recall. In any case Carlsbad Caverns is so fabulous it is worth the trip.
