“carls place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

with five children paying $5/each was expensive to just walk through a home with bookshelves. nothing special. the volunteer tour guide corrected me constantly to stay on the plastic on the floor and not step on the wood, being disabled and not able to walk straight i was humiliated. go visit the trails and goats and forget the house. the stairs were hard for me to climb. their was a porta john and temporary water to wash your hands while ADA ones under construction. very little parking with playhouse next door.

“Beautiful scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2014

I visited the Carl Sandburg home and it was just what I expected. The house was lovely and the tour was great my tour guide was very knowledgable and could answer every question I had. The price was reasonable $5 for a 30 minute tour. The surroundings was what really made the visit great though. There are beautiful trails starting at the home and go all over his property. There is a beautiful lake and trail that lead to the house about 1/4 mile hike nothing treacherous. With the tour took about 1hr30. Great stop!

“A Nice Stop Driving through WNC. Very insightful of a great man.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2014

I have always seen the signs on the interstate for the Carl Sandburg home, but never stopped. Finally I did this past weekend and was I surprised. This inside look at an iconic author was so informative and intriguing. There are trails, a goat farm, and several things to walk through and tour, including the home in which he lived in while in NC. If you are in no rush, take a little detour off to visit this historic site. It will be a nice refreshment.

“Carl Sandburg's North Carolina Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 5, 2014

If you are traveling on I-26 between Spartanburg, SC and Asheville, NC, the Carl Sandburg home is worth a detour. It's located a few miles west of I-26 in Flat Rock, NC. Follow the signs through the maze of suburban development to find the National Historic Site, located in the quiet, older part of Flat Rock. When I visited in July, 2013, I discovered the small parking lot was nearly filled. I was fortunate to find one parking spot still available. Don't be surprised if you can't find any parking spots available, since the site seems to be very popular. The home itself is on a hilltop, above the parking lot. It's a steep walk of about a third of a mile to get up there. I believe people who are handicapped can use the paved road to reach the house. Tours start in the basement area of the house. The tour was interesting. I was impressed with how every room was like a library, filled with all the books Carl Sandburg had collected in his lifetime. He was from Illinois and he and his wife came to North Carolina because his wife wanted to raise goats, and the climate in Western North Carolina was better to raise goats, than in the colder climate in Illinois and Michigan. A few goats can be found in the barnyard area near the house. The Sandburgs used to sell goats milk, but the National Park Service doesn't engage in that commercial activity today. Visiting the Sandburg farm is like stepping back in time, to the 1940's. The National Park Service has done a good job, preserving the home and grounds as if Carl Sandburg was still living there.
