“Beautiful mountain setting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 16, 2012

The house is interesting as it contains many of Sandburg's personal possessions and the setting is lovely, especially in the Fall when the leaves have color and are reflected in the pond/lake in the front of the property before you walk up to the house. There are wonderful walking trails surrounding the house as well as several interesting out buildings. Dogs on a leash are also welcome and our westie and poodle companions enjoyed the outing as much as our group did. And as a final enticement, I should mention that the site has no admission charge, though donations are welcomed.

“Great place for groups with varied interests/ abilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

This place has alot to offer for different ages/ abilities. A variety of trails from a gravel stroll to a 3-5 mile challenging hike in a beautiful setting. The house and history tour is worth the trip, not to mention the farm. Kids can pet and feed the goats too!

“This Was Carl Sandburg's "Walden Pond"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2012

You get some impression of the serenity and peacefulness of this place while walking from the parking area up the path to the home location. The guided tour of the home a bit of the grounds given by the Park Ranger was very well done and informative. She had been doing the tours for five years, and really knew the history and the details. The home is just that--a home. You get an up close and personal perspective on the everyday lives of Carl Sandburg and his wife and family. Of course, the commercial goat operation run by Mrs. Sandburg was every bit as important to the long term success of their marriage as was the serene writing location. Take the alternate path through the woods when you return to the parking area and enjoy the ambiance as you circle the pond...every bit the inspiration as Walden Pond.

“Simple, Yet Lovely Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2012

Mrs. Sandburg managed the home so Carl could work. She did an excellent job. She left everything there after he passed away: books, furniture, dishes, bedclothes. Oh, and take the time to pay a visit to the goats. Mrs. Sandburg raised goats and they are quite used to people. We wanted to take at least one kid home!
