“Fantastic, funky place-- we loved it!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2006

This is a wonderful, quirky motel and restaurant-- it had a delightful, left-of-center vibe that was such a pleasant departure from chain motels. The rooms were large, clean, and while certainly not modern, very comfortable. Loved the alternative local paper-- you get a sense of the southern UT counterculture.

The restaurant is the real draw-- don't be put off by the bright lights, which make it look more like a diner. The food was fresh, local, and healthy, and the service, while a bit slow at times, was friendly and clearly family operated. The absolute best was the older gentleman (who I'm guessing is the owner?) who played some swinging standards on an electric piano for most of the evening-- he was fantastic and very charming. Such fantastic fruits and vegetables-- this is a real oasis.

We arrived here after a long drive up route 12 from Bryce-- it was some of the most stunning scenery I've ever seen. Torrey was a great stop on our southwest road trip, and Capitol Inn was an excellent value.

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at this inn. Keep in mind that it's not really a B&B - you don't get breakfast with the cost of the inn. But, that didn't really matter. There is a very nice restaurant just a short walk away. They also have refrigerators in the room, so you can bring some milk/cottage cheese/etc. and have breakfast in your room. The rooms are spacious and the owners are really nice. They gave us some milk one night for my husband's coffee. Our room was cleaned both days that we stayed. We did encounter one problem. The couple next to us had a major domestic dispute. That went on for about 2 hours one night (from 10 pm until 12 midnight). I told the owner that he should post emergency numbers in the room. I guess that sort of thing can happen anywhere though. I would stay there again and hope that we'd have better neighbors!

we stayed at capitol reef inn for a day
------

comfortable, affordable, just outside of the business center of town, simply decorated, unlike the flashing lights of austin's chuckwagon lodge. very good cafe out in front which includes a gift shop stocking a wide variety of books, gifts, and art. be patient, one person was serving as motel receptionist, store keeper, waitress. enjoyed our stay a lot. lots of stuff to see outside too: rocks and crystal collection, anasazi decorated slate, etc.

we kept going back, eating there 3 times during our brief stay in torrey. breakfast, lunch, dinner - the food is fresh and delicious, unpretentious but made with care. not too expensive.

If you're of the non-corporate, artistic, and looking for the unique attitude, this is the place! From the under-construction kiva and hand built furniture to the EXCELLENT food (real veggies I might add), it was a wonderful contrast to the predictable "wonder where we are now" sameness of the chains.

I have to admit, we were a little dubious of this place when we arrived. It looks old and certainly not deluxe. But for $48 for two, we decided to chance it. We were really surprised at the lovely, large room. It was furnished in natural wood, southwest design and everything was color coordinated and spacious. The hot tub was outside in a secluded spot and was delightful. The restaurant was the highlight - the food is tremendous with fresh trout (from Utah) on the menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The setting for this motel is beautiful and if you aren't used to a real cowboy "feel", this place will get you there. We would go back in a minute. What a deal!
